  1. Hi Everyone, I am interested to know if anybody has a Texas license or was in the process of obtaining one when you were offered a job out of state
  2. Hi! I know this thread is a little old but my facility uses Meditech (hate it with a passion) I have worked with other computerized programs and this by far is the worst. But to answer your question. I have had similar things happen. and what you have to do is edit or adjust the dose on the buttons at the bottom. Sometimes when i scanned it would mess up like you stated especially if it was a prn with a range. You must be very vigilant with the program especially with a program like this and make sure it is correct before saving.
  3. I worked at Dekalb as a new grad. Like previous posters states, it can be a challenge sometimes but we had the best teamwork and the staff was culturally diverse ( which I like). I don't regret it at all. I use to work with someone from s. Fulton and she hated it ! Very high acuity and little to no techs.
  4. I had an experience similar to yours when i was a new grad. I had built a rapport with this patient. Vague symptoms that started with having an episode of syncope at the doctors office was the reason she came to us. Though she wasnt a surgical patient, she too felt "anxious" but it was more of not being able to sleep and wanting something for it. Checked on her frequently through the night. Vitals at baseline for her. Next morning she is less responsive for day shift. Turns out she had a massive stroke. Then proceeded to have multiple strokes and passed. Doc couldnt figure out why. I was shaken up completely. What did i miss? Should i have awaken her before 6 o'clock report? As previous posts state, unfortutenly some things are out of our control. The most important lessen i have learned as a nurse is I am only human just like everyone else. On to the next one...
  5. I too just graduated this past weekend. I love GBCN for so many reasons. The friendships that u make with the others going through the same motions that u are just about sums it up. The faculty is awesome, the program is HARD i am not even going to lie but i feel it has prepared me for my nursing career. You have already pretty much summarized the pros and cons yourself. The big CON being the cost. To me its all relative. The majority of my classmates have accepted job offers or have been offered jobs including myself. Research some more, talk to former and current students if u can and decide what best works for u. p.s. you do not have to take prereqs in Macon, u can go to GPC or GA State and then transfer. The macon route is only if u want to start as a freshman. let me know if i can hep one03grad
  6. Depending on what nsg school u attend piedmont scholar program- pays tuition and books in exchange for a year of service for each year of payment---only for GA Baptist students CHOA-pays tuition and books--any nsg school--requirements on homepage ww.choa.org, must work for them after school Northside--set amount on what they will pay out, any nsg school, must work after graduation Emory--only for Emory nsg student--dont know amout, must work for Emory Healthcare after graduation Regardless, if you get a scholarship you are committed to the facility that has finacnced your education. If i made any errors feel free to correct
  7. I am a senior a GBCN and i have had a blast! The extra year goes by really fast and just like SanDgroovy said, you can also do fastrack. It is true about looking for jobs. About half of my class or more already have jobs with graduation still one month away ( yes!). I think its worth the money plus there are service cancelable loans that are forgiveable by working in the state of GA for X amount of years. Look into both. Weigh the pros and cons and listen to your intutition. one03grad
  8. I work at Cobb Hospital. I have no complaints even though i am working as a tech during school. The nurses have only complained about staffing, which is fairly common in any hospital.
  9. I guess my biggest piece of advice is to form a study group ASAP. It may not be ideal for some, but it def. helps to stay on point. Also, i would speak to my advisor at the first sign of struggling with any courses. I dont know if you can "prepare" for anything right now. If you have had previous healthcare experience then it may be an easier transition for you. You can look on Mercer's Atlanta bookstore and see what books are going to be used for ur classes. The first semester is mainly just learning about skills and the history of nursing. I think we had to write a paper on a famous nursing philosopher (sp.). Clinicals were fun but LOOOOONG! A lot of bed baths, turning and ambulating. The first semester you give NO MEDS! You just work as like a CNA/PCT and getting a feel for the hospital settng. The second semester is tougher because you start the med-surg rotation as well as learning meds, various skills, and learn how to "test" like a nurse. Eventually it gets easier as you progress. I am having a brain freeze right now so PM me if you have anythin else.
  10. .....but the nursing school is locatied on boulevard near Atlanta Medical. the nursing school is at Mercer now. They have been sicne 2002 i believe. It's called Georgia Baptist College of Nursing of Mercer University. No longer on boulevard. Just had to set that straight.
  11. Well, I am not sure what the general passing rate is. My class is about 110 students from a beginning class of maybe 130. A lot of people had a difficult time with Pharmacology which is in the beginning of the junior year. For me, OB/PEDS semester was the most difficult. I had absoultely ZERO free time at all. I know that the class that graduated in either 2002/2003 had an NCLEX passing rate of like 93% and due to that the college implemented a policy where there is no rounding of grades. That setback a lot of people who were borderline. They have started to increase the intensity of the program in hopes of increasing the NCLEX scores. I havent seen any recent scores. The professors are awesome and there are so many people to meet and network with. I think your class ( Fall 2007) has about 160 students! They are going to break you up into groups so that everyone can fit into the lecture hall. It really helps, in my opinion to have that extra year of clincal. Anyway, let me know if anyone needs any other info
  12. CONGRATS to you all! Welcome to the GBCN family. I am going to start my final year in the fall. I have really enjoyed my experience. Let me tell everyone right now, it is going to be DIFFICULT and TEDIOUS but you must realize what you are training for. If you have any questions feel free to PM me so i can try to give you the scoop.
  13. Well i have small children also. i am not going to say that you will not have any debt because you will. i get grants and scholarships, but i do have federal loans. the financial aid office does its best to help you pay for your education. They have many options for you to finance your education. just like a house, education is something that you have to put an investment in and watch it mature. i dont know about Clayton or other schools financial aid but of course you know that Mercer is private just like Emory so you have to make the decision on what works for you. if you have specific questions go ahead and call the FA office and tell them your concerns. the program is the same time as all of them it may be longer for some becuase this is a transfer program with less pre reqs but when people transfer they have pre reqs that are not required by the college so they may have been in college longer. I think it is discrimination and unethical for an employer to hire you based on where you graduated from but Piedmont Hospital and GBCN have a partnership that if you want to, you can get a scholarship and work for them after graduation. Everyone is pretty nice at Mercer just give them a call. hope this helps.
  14. During orientation you will be introduced to the school and administrators. its kind of like a meet and greet. you will be given a tour around the whole college. you will have your mercer I.D. taken and given the option to register your vehicle (free) so you can get a parking permit. Mercer is pretty good about parking. The higher your senority though the more it seems to become an issue. Since many of you will be starting this year, most of your classes are early anyway so you dont have to worry. you will also be given a cubby for communications within the college. they give you little bags that have some goodies in them . the one i got had a lunchbag with the schools logo on it that i still use today. you will also learn about CPR if you dont already know about it. most of the undergraduate instructors that will be teaching your courses SHOULD be there. Then you are served a lunch. Also, the bookstore is right next to the axillary office so you can get your books if need be. The whole experience was pretty nice. This is when you start to learn about your classmates and make friends. Hope this helps
  15. Atlanta Medical Center is where the old Georgia Baptist school was. GBCN is now a part of Mercer University Atlanta campus, which is the same university that is down in Macon too. They only offer a BSN, RN-BSN, and MSN, no more diploma programs. Check out the website at http://www.mercer.edu.
  16. Welcome to the GBCN family! I hope this will be an exciting new venture in your lives. I am currently a student and will be a junior in the fall. If you have any questions PM me.
  17. I attend Georgia Baptsit College of Nursing of Mercer University in Atlanta, Georgia. I LOVE IT. Couldnt have asked for a better place to get my BSN Going into semester 3 of 6 in the fall
  18. Both patho and nutrition should be the be the easiest of your worries. Both classes are regurgitation of material. Patho is very similar to A&P except you will go more in depth into the systems and you will be expected to know the A&P beforehand. Nutrition is the same way, learn the material and comprehend it and it will be fine. Not too difficult. Good luck.
  19. Hi everyone I have been a type 1 diabetic for 12 years and have had a pump for 4. My classmates are always trying to get on me about eating a cookie or anything sweet and i have to try to make them understand that is CHO not just simple sugar.Anyways, has any one heard about the new inhaled insulin that was approved by the FDA to treat type 1 and 2? How exciting. I am going to ask about that to my endocrinologist. Its not going to be available until this summer though and you may have to supplement one or two injections. If the effect controls my BG as well as the pump then i say " BRING IT ON". It would be nice not to carry my "beeper".
  20. OM goodness. I am currently a NS on a cardiac floor. Its the first time to get meds right so me and my two partners (yes partners) go into give our pt's room to give her meds. She is on a tube feeding, has Alzheimers, etc. My partners and i see a long order of laxatives, stool softners that she must get. We are like "is this normal"? Anyway, we give her the meds one of which was Colace. I kid you not we stepped out of the room for 20 minutes and she exploded. As we were doing our assessment i told my partners MOUTHING the words " i think she had a BM". WHOA! it was so runny that it was at her ankles. It was all over her foley all the way up to her belly button. The smell was so raunchy that i had to go by the window, get a breath, and dive back in to help clean her up. Meanwhile my partners are both gagging till tears come out. It took us a good 30 minutes to get her cleaned up with 4 people including our instructor. Lesson learned if you feel that a pt. should not be given a laxative, and her own nurse doesnt know, call the prescriber.
  21. I currently go to GBN also. Believe me there are no nuns there. Faculty are always available and are more than willing to meet your needs. As far as cost it is expensive becuase it is a private school but like the old saying goes you get what you pay for. The hope scholarship is only $3000 maximum versus all tuition paid for at a public school. That kinda sucks but hey it helps. Also, the campus is really beautiful and its spacious. If anyone wants to apply there i recommend that you try to get a tour or visit the campus.
