palpation is a better indicator than visualization...keep trying...you don't learn nearly as much on a successful start that you do on a line you blow...learn from each mistake, evolve your technique

This situation is an unfortunate reality, as ER nurses we'll always see this type of pt. Hopefully you've got a good doc on shift who is going to set the pt straight and not order any narcotics.

I've always used Lido, the compassionate thing to do. I work with a retired Special Forces RN, he states if his crew needed Rocephin d/t a wild night out he'd use sterile water and let 'em know about it.
As stated above, let it roll off your back. Did she have you running for boxed lunches and soda as well...and another warm blanket, and reposition my bed?

ETOH intoxication, n/v, overdose, back pain, *insert here* ridiculous ailment which should have been taken care of at the clinic, headache, fever...oh yeah, 5150

if you're not jaded by the demanding seekers and frequent fliers you're an android from outer space, or a psych nurse... its part of the job, don't let em get you down...just appreciate the REAL emergencies more when they come around, the price we pa...
What's the skinny? Still a newbie in the ER...some cohorts say no dice to piggybacking a propofol drip on a NS line, my hero/mentor says no problemo. We all know the IV drugs book state it's contraindicated, soooooooooooooo. Opinions?

A blessing on the hands (for caring and healing, of course)-which included...a chaplain pouring rosemary scented olive oil on my hands while she thanked me. Meanwhile I've got a code 2 SOB coming in and a belligerent 5150 to deal with. Ever try to...

sometimes up to 75%, hopefully 0%...some sure can suck the life out of you. I find it almost easier if they have a 5150 placed (geodon, my friend?) instead of the belligerent drunk or psych who "knows their rights, and I don't have to take/do that" ...
I call 'em out as much as possible in front of other staff, patients, etc...gladly informing them thats not even the worst I've been called this shift, you're going to have to put your backpack on and go back to school to get me riled up.

or...the guy who checks in at triage, sees a line building and realizes "shucks, my abdominal pain isn't getting in in front of chest pain?" flash forward 90 minutes...this gem returns home, calls 911 c/o chest pain. you know it, comes in code 2, g...
Had my first pede code blue yesterday. We worked a 1 month old for over an hour, little man didn't make it. I cried a bit, came home, hugged my wife and snuggled with my dogs. Any suggestions for putting this one to bed?

My longest consecutive stint admitted was 35 days. I was 19 years old and wasting away from Crohn's. You learn quickly that a ****** nurse is a drag, but a cool nurse could make you forget you are in the hospital. I strive to be that cool nurse. ...

Update debriefed with others in on the code, then spoke about it with the doc and house sup some more. Surfed, played golf with my buddy who pushed meds, and got some good sleep. Feeling much better. Glad this experience is out of the way. Tha...
