  1. Hello Everyone, Just an update for you. We had a mandatory unit meeting with the "executive staff" today and they have decided to close our unit effective July 1st. No attempt to recruit Dr's, no NICU as promised, just closing. I think if they had tried to save this unit it would have worked, but they didn't even bother. :angryfire I've got 4 weeks to find another job. I've worked here almost 11 years. I can't believe this is happening
  2. I agree with you. It seems like people with emotional problems who themselves have been helped through tough times in a psych unit, want to work there to help someone like themselves. I think it's the same for alot of different nursing specialties. For example, if you had a great experience during childbirth, you might choose to become a labor/delivery nurse. I have known a few RNs who had a premie baby and then proceeded to move to a NICU. They can see what a fine job the nurses and staff members do, and they want to be a part of that. However, I'm sorry to hear that those psych nurses took thier own lives. You would think that they would know when and how to find help when the going got tough.
  3. try exfoliating your legs every 3 days or so and use a moisturizer for sensitive skin. You can exfoliate with a loofa sponge and shower gel. Be sure to work the loofa in a circular motion. Rinse loofa well with hot water and let it dry completely before using it again. Hope it helps.
  4. You can always order them over the internet from your favorite maker i.e. Cherokee, Landau etc... It's easy and they get delivered to your door.
  5. It's the same at our hospital but we are losing patients due to the fact that the Docs would rather deliver thier patients at a hospital with an NICU than split up a mom and baby if the baby needs to be transported.
  6. I know what you mean, most of our Docs are nice most of the time, but there is this one Doc who is a COMPLETE JACK@SS each and everytime he comes to the unit. Maybe he just doesn't like our hospital or something but that's no reason to be rude and condesending to all the RNs. Perhaps he's just a miserable person.
  7. I'm confused are you complaining in this post or stroking your ego Just kidding!!
  8. Are there several hospitals near yours or is it in a rural area? I ask this because our hospital is one of about 5 or 6 medium sized hospitals within a 50 mile radius. The Docs have privileges at usually 3 or more of these hospitals and so choose to send thier patients to the ones who have NICU in house. There are plenty of patients that would come to our hospital if we had a NICU, but are being advised not to.
  9. Hello everyone, I work in an LDRP unit. Since October we have been losing revenue due to lack of new patients. The Docs won't send them to us because we are the only hospital in the area with no NICU. So, because of this, administration said we were going to get our own NICU starting March 1st. Well... March 1st has come and gone and we still have no NICU. Our unit manager has taken it upon herself to do some PR for our unit and needs ideas. The only problem is, I don't think it will matter how much PR we do if the Docs don't recommend us to thier patients. Any ideas?
  10. When my sister's daughter was a newborn, my sister was clipping the baby's nails. She got a little to close to the skin and it started bleeding. She called me (long distance) to ask if I thought she should take her to the ER. :chuckle I said " JANE... it's her fingernail. " Somehow this statement brought my sister back down to earth. But, I can see how anyone would get over excited about thier childs health. MY daughter bleeding from her nose and fainting would definitely cause me to run to the ER.
  11. What? Maybe you are posting on the wrong thread. :chuckle
  12. we just got a memo from administration about MRSA VS Spider bites. apparently ER was misdiagnosing MRSA abcesses as spider bites. Now every abcess is cultured for MRSA.
  13. I wish I had time for make-up and hair. I OLAY my face. Then put long hair into pony tail and Voila! Done.
  14. i thought the reason units used AGENCY nurses was BECAUSE they are short staffed and need the extra help. The nurses should be welcoming Agency nurses with open arms instead of leering eyes.
  15. bagging a baby and doing ppv is the same thing. Do you mean chest compressions?
  16. Tweety, I work with all women, and it's very true!
  17. You are right about the lay person's lack of education about thier own health. Especially during pregnancy. Can't tell you how many times a Doc has ordered a C-section on a perfectly normal labor patient just becuase he/she didn't feel like waiting or wanted to " get it over" so they can go home. If people knew what was normal and knew what to expect during labor, Docs wouldn't be able to "take the baby" at will. I think that it is such a shame for docs to do that to a laboring woman. An unwarranted c-section takes all the joy out of having a baby. Being able to bring a baby into the world "naturally" is a real pleasure for a new mom. After 9 long months of pregnancy, it is what I always looked forward to.
  18. OH MY GOD!! What was he thinking? Nobody questioned him? I hope that there is a law suit filed against this idiot. I can't imagine what was going through his mind. BAD BAD BAD DOCTOR!! p.s. I am very sorry for your family's loss.
  19. about 10 years ago when I was doing my clinicals in OR, we had a man come in from a rural area with an inguinal hernia. I had to assist so I walk into the OR and here is this man with a scrotal sac the size of a basketball. All of his intestines were inside his scrotum. We had to open up his abdomen and pull the intestines out of the hernia to put them back. This took about 2hrs, then we had to do the actual hernia repair! I was wondering the whole time about how this man got his pants over his nuts. Or did he come to the hospital in one of those mumu dresses like Mrs.Roper from Three's Company used to wear?
  20. I work in OB and we do our own C-sections. I've been laundering my own scrubs for the last five years since our hospital stopped providing the scrubs for us. So far there has been no issues with infection control. I actually like being in charge of my own scrub choices because I don't have to wear ugly green or drab blue.
  21. kc2004 replied to babynurse123's topic in Ob/Gyn
would that info be policies and procedures books?
  22. imagine the mess...YUK!
  23. the hospital where i work keeps 3 people on the OB floor at all times. if there are no patients, the OR tech can get pulled to help out with sitting a suicide on psych or in the ED but she must remain available in case of an emergency. in OB it is so important to have someone available right away, you have 2 peoples lives at stake with your patients and "GOD FORBID" someone comes in with a prolapsed cord and the receptionist in the ED says to her "Oh, you can have a seat until we can find the L&D nurse ."
  24. i have seen silver nitrate used on circs before and they look like ugly black burns (actually i think that's what silver nitrate does). i've never seen the healed member afterward though.
  25. people tend to assume that all women want children, that is why they ask you. instead of saying "never" to the when question, just say "i don't know" or "not yet". its nobody's business if you don't want kids but you'll save yourself alot of frustration and further probing if you give a casual "we haven't decided yet" answer.
