My dad died at home under the care of hospice 2 years ago. I was the nurse/daughter and was called upon a lot by family members for medical type questions so it was kind of hard to be the grieving daughter. I do remember watching different family me...

You probably have a thicker skin then you think, you were just caught off guard and shocked by his inappropriate behavior. It might not be the last time you get a butt chewing, but you'll certainly be more preparred next time and able to fend off his...

I will tell you this... Our shiney soon to be new hospital had a nice planning committee to help design and plan our units. (It was all for a cutesy show.) None of our ideas, including physician imput helped in the planning. We are getting what someb...
  6. New Job

I've been doing some PRN work at a hospice facility. I also love it and sometimes consider doing it full time. My other job is in labor and delivery...( both ends of the spectrum) I am so tired, and often feel burnt out. It's just the jumping from ex...
  7. Should she quit

My sister and I started out together in nursing school. It seemed to be so much more of a struggle for me. I ended up repeating my first semester. It was the best thing that could happen. I was able to develop my own study habits, my own study groups...

Exactly... take a well deserved break, enjoy the holidays, and relax!! After the holidays, you will get a new breath and hit the floor running with a new excitment for NURSING... not nursing school!
  9. Do nurses get paid enough for what they do?

I don't necessarily think I'm underpaid for the work I do. However, for the drama and BS I endure from the staff and higher ups....heck yea!!! (Could you ever pay me enough?)
  10. My dad is dying.....

I am so sorry you are hurting and scared. I went through the same situaion this year with my Dad...the very same story, the very same disease process. I lost my Dad in July and am still having trouble coming to terms with it (that's another story.) ...
  11. A Dear Abbey letter. What is your take?

I work in labor and delivery. A lot of "things" are exposed there and a lot of modesty goes out the window. It's still my patients option to maintain as much modesty as possible, and more that a few fathers opt to leave the room during vaginal exams,...
  12. Zoloft???

Over 1/2 my graduating class was on some kind of antidepressants... Go for it! You be great, and be so happy you did!
  13. Ever had a nurse or doc as a patient?

Off the top... I'm a lousy patient. My new nickname after my hyst was " THE BEAST". I remember being right out of nursing school, and working as a new nurse on a med surg unit. I was assigned a doc as a patient. I must have really been stressing a...

  15. Why am I trying to make career changes already?

Have you considered working in women's health? Labor and delivery has a lot of teaching oppurtunities, etc. ...Got to go catch a baby as I write... BYE!
  16. what do you think of the doctors you work with???

I've had the unpleasant experience of working with some very unpleasnt docs. At my current facility though, our docs are pretty awesome!! They respect our opinions, they value us as part of a team. They have really given light to what a working atmo...
  17. My husband works for me- is this ever going to work?

Seems like if it's working out for you, him, and the majority of staff... so be it. Let things be and be happy! If he's the peach you and the majority thinks he is, the others will either be won over, or they're looking to start crap in the first pla...

All department heads were involved in this decision. This Doc provided literature to back up his plan of care as requested by pharmacy, it was mixed and infused at this steady rate...By me? NO WAY! Luck of the draw or by weaseling my way out... whate...
  19. I guess I'm a florist now too....

I work in a busy L and D unit. I remember one time we had this gal... (who felt like she needed to be a pampered princess) ask that we shave her legs. She actually expected us to do it, and was quite miffed when we did not ( as if we had time) Her co...
  20. I'm agreeing with these previous statements. I think you hurt her feelings, and I'm doubting she realized how hard she punched you, be it playful of not. It was not acceptable behavior, but neither is being hurtful. I also have a sore shoulder. I'm ...

  22. new to site

I feel burnt out every other week it seems. I do know what its like to have a marriage fall through. That alone seems to drain everything from a person. I know that I went through a devastating period when i first started my current job about 4 years...
  23. Epidural management in labor

The particular facility primarily catered to VIP patients. That was the idea anyway. I guess having a higher social class bought these special priveledges, but indeed bought a lot of unnecessary procedures, ie. C sections, as well. ( My reasoning for...
  24. Epidural management in labor

I worked in a facility that placed the caths in the Am prior to induction, and then turned the pumps on later in the day. Seemed to work great, but I did notice a definite increase in our section rate if the pump was on prior to 4 cm.
  25. Epidural management in labor

Our epidurals are totally managed by our anesthesia department which is primarily CRNAs, esp. at night. We do turn them off, we can turn them on, we even pull the caths, etc. Most of us nurses play dumb when it comes to adjusting them, therefore ane...
