  1. Baby and school?

I did an accelerated BSN with a 1 and 2 year old. You can do it, just mentally prepare yourself..You will need good organization, support and long term high stress tolerance..but its possible!
  2. UB ABS 2016 start

A little late but if you still have questions let me know! I had a baby so I was a little busy for a bit..lol
  3. Nope, I became an RN at 39 :) I work in acute med-surg and have no problem keeping up with my 23 year old coworkers! Except when I was 40 and in my late 3rd trimester of pregnancy...LOL. I guess I'm a late bloomer!
  4. How to manage life on night shift?

Although I work days now, when I was on nights I had issues with falling asleep on the way home and my commute was just 30 minutes. The only thing that helped me was eating. I would save a granola bar, a piece of fruit or even doritos and eat them ...
  5. 34 yr old starting out...help

I became a nurse at 39, so it's not too late! I did an accelerated BSN in 1 year, but I had to do roughly 2 years of prereqs before I could apply to that program. You will have to take all the sciences again if they are more than 5 years old most p...
  6. Uworld percentage

I did almost the entire qbank and at the end was testing in the 60% range, I passed nclex in 75 questions.
  7. UB ABS 2016 start

Hi! Sorry for the late reply I just saw this. The average gpa when I got in was a 3.6 I think, but the committee looks at how good your essay is and if your prereq gpa is high they count that as well. I had some terrible grades from my past, but th...
  8. I'm currently 33 weeks and have been working full time on a med-surg unit. I take all precautions patients I'm given, with the obvious exception of CMV and shingles, but my coworkers understand that and wouldn't give me those patients anyway. Just ...
  9. The worst job you had before becoming a Nurse?

    telemarketing!
  10. "I don't know why she has to get such a lowly job just to be a nurse"

I was a CNA before I became a nurse and I thought it was worth it. I was a lot more comfortable performing patient care and talking to and relating to patients than other student nurses just starting. I wasn't treated badly except maybe a few times...
  11. When to Get Pregnant

I did nursing school with a 1 and 2 year old, but that said not sure I could have done it while pregnant. I'm 30 weeks now with an almost 3 and 4 year old, working as an RN and taking only 2 masters classes and it's really tough. That said if you h...
  12. I hate nursing school !

I hear you..nursing school is really really tough, you have to really want to be a nurse, otherwise you won't have the motivation to get through it. Believe me, we all had some of these things happen. As a student, you're going to feel in the way, ...
  13. 8 or 12 hour shifts

I work in acute care (med-surg unit) and I hated 8 hour shifts. I worked mostly 7-3 with some 3-11. I felt like I was always there, and unless I had really easy patients I would always be there late charting. I barely ever got 2 days off in a row,...
  14. New Grad RN... is this patient load safe?

I am a new nurse (10 months) on a med-surg unit and although it is regular when I did noc shift to have 6 patients, we almost always had an aide. It would be really difficult to prevent falls, manage sundowners, t&p q2 plus all our charting and ...
  15. Starting nursing school with a 3 year old

I did my pre-reqs pregnant with a 1yr old, then an accelerated BSN with a 1 and 2 year old. I also worked per diem as an aide the whole time. I had a great support system though with my fiance and my family. You definitely DON'T have to wait until...
  16. I am a new nurse and I am hating my job

Only you can decide what is ultimately right for you. If you can stick it out do so, but if you are completely miserable, I would just leave if you can, although I'm not sure how your contracts work. I work med-surg but our ratio's are a bit better...
  17. Contemplating changing majors...

If you like teaching and health promotion there are many opportunities in nursing out of the hospital setting. I know many of my classmates that started out in acute care and were miserable because they knew it wasn't for them. There are many areas...
  18. Failed the NCLEX at 149 Questions... Please help!!!

I also used Uworld. It is really difficult and frustrating at first. I was only answering 30-40% of the questions correctly. The rationales are really good, and you start to know how to narrow down the answers. By the end I was still only answerin...
  19. where do you learn blood draws

I know of many programs don't teach venipuncture/IV insertion anymore. I was fortunate that my program taught venipuncture as a skill on a fake arm our first semester, then if we got the opportunity we could do it on real patients in clinicals. Dur...
  20. UB ABS 2016 start

Oh boy lol. The hardest for me was our acute med/surg class the last semester. They are preparing you for the boards so the exams are so hard..major anxiety. The 3rd semester is hard all around because although the exams are getting harder, you al...
  21. UB ABS 2016 start

I was in UB's ABS program and graduated this past May. It's very hard but it's worth it. I had a 3.8 prereq GPA and 3.1 overall. Everyone I know from the program (including traditional students) passed NCLEX on the first try, which is huge. I worke...
  22. cna to rn???

I was a CNA in long term care, then a nursing assistant in a hospital before I became an RN. It makes it a lot easier because you know a lot of the basics of patient care already. I also got hired as an RN in the hospital where I worked. I was nev...
  23. New CNA looking for jobs, full day shift?

Hmm as a nurse I love 12s, but when I was a CNA I don't think I would have liked it. Also the previous poster is right. The morning is extremely hectic for a brand new CNA. Big rush to get everyone ready for breakfast in a short time. I was a 3-1...
  24. Anyone excited about your RN life ahead?

Its nice making a good wage and being able to provide for my family, but where I live acute care hospital positions are by far the highest paying. Now I love nursing, but I earn every penny of my almost $30 an hour. I come home and literally collaps...
  25. Do RNs get extra pay for working with students?

In my limited experience, it obviously depends on the instructor. We have a clinical group whose teacher is an RN in our hospital. She is wonderful. If she assigns her student to my patient, they help the NAs with care, pass meds, take their vitals...
