Anyone know anything about American nurses working in Mexico?
It's May 2017 and I'm keeping this thread alive. Hoping that there's a US nurse working in MX who reads this. Can my US license be transferred to a MX license? If so, how? What agencies do I start with? Thanks!

Summer Entry 2013 Accelerated BSN/MSN Johns Hopkins
Hi everyone -- I'm very proud to have been accepted for the Summer 2013 cohort. A big congratulations to everyone who was also accepted! I decided to attend Penn, my first choice for a number of reasons, several of which don't really have much to do with the programs themselves. One thing to note is that Hopkins' program is 13 months, while Penn's is 18 months; this might account for some of the discrepancies in tuition price. (ETA: Hopkins fall entry is 17 mos. at the same $ as the 13 mo. program... hmmm.) I grew up outside of Baltimore & lived there too, and to be honest, I don't believe that it is significantly less safe than Philadelphia. I really love the city, its people and the surrounding environment (state parks/shores/beaches/etc.). I do really recommend having/getting a car, which'll expand the residential territory available to you, among other things. Is rent really expensive nowadays? I thought only a few neighborhoods had shot up in price. Ultimately -- we'll all be working together as RNs & NPs after whatever school we go to ends.

2013 UPenn BSN/MSN Applicants
Hi everyone... I check out of allnurses for a while... but wanted to pop back in to say that I was accepted for the BSN/MSN with PC-AGNP specialty. I've already confirmed and am excited to start the whole moving process. I don't use Facebook, but I hope to connect with my cohorts here or elsewhere -- please message me if you can! I'll also be participating in the chat later tonight. Thanks to everyone here for your help & support with the process. Good luck to everyone pursuing their dreams.

Shmipps, I don't know if everyone gets an interview, but they are interviewing regular decision students now -- I had mine earlier this week.

I also received the magazine... I think they stick your address on their mailing list when they get your application! Good luck to the early admissions people, who'll be hearing back sometime in the next week or so! For summer entry, I was told that they'd be notifying applicants "in early February" for the BSN portion.

2013 UCSF MEPN Applicants
No worries, guys! UCSF was not my first choice, and honestly, it's good to just get it over with. My other applications, though -- those better pull through!!! kdiem, I live in SF, so I imagine that this batch of letters was dropped in the mail on Friday. Watch out everyone, they are coming...

dee, thanks so much for providing this interview feedback. I'm curious who interviewed you; I'm pretty sure that my interviewer is an admissions counselor, not a faculty member or program director for my chosen specialty (not that there is anything wrong with this -- I just want to get a feel for who I'll be speaking with). Those who interviewed over the phone -- who did you talk to? I'll also ask about notification dates... maybe we'll get a consensus! :)

Hopeful, I was also asked to name some adjectives that someone might use to describe me... I was additionally asked if I had any NP role models. The male admissions associate (forget his name) who facilitated the tour with Filomena was the one who said there'd be ~100 people on Monday. I'm surprised that there were 80 of us on Friday... perhaps a number of people split after their interview. kdiem, the only other advice I have to add would be to take advantage of the current students you'll meet with some questions at the ready. It was my understanding that all the students we spoke with were in the BSN section, which is the same track for everyone -- meaning that their insights into their particular specialty were limited at best. Hopeful's suggestion to bring a pair of comfortable shoes for the post-interview events is also good advice!

2013 UPenn BSN/MSN Applicants
Hi all, Just to second what hopeful said -- the questions your interviewer asks are likely different for everyone, but ultimately they are a springboard for you to express why you're seeking a career as a nurse. Here's what I was asked: Why Penn? What do you see yourself doing down the road -- 3, 5, 10 years in the future? Do you have any questions? How do you manage stressful situations? How do you think you'll adapt to Philadelphia? Pretty mundane stuff, but our conversation actually went over the 1/2 hour mark by several minutes! I even managed to ask my interviewer how and why she ended up in her specialty. Her response was pretty cool. Cheesy as it sounds, I believe they are looking for the vision that you have of yourself in nursing -- they are looking for the spark and connection you have with your role as a nurse that will guide you through the challenges of the practice. Communicating that is important. FYI -- in addition to lunch -- coffee, tea, juice, water, fruit, and breakfast pastry treats were provided in the am... so if you don't manage to grab breakfast beforehand, you can eat something when you get to room 218. The day was a full one and I am quite tired out. I hear there will be ~100 interviewees on Monday -- good luck to everyone interviewing then, and enjoy it!! It really is sort of fun.

I'm also an applicant for the summer 2013 start date! I'm actually doing my interview in person next Monday (I'm going to be on the east coast for my Penn interview this Friday, so I thought I'd just take the train down). For those who have interviewed, what was that like? I'm curious to hear what they asked you!

Holly, congratulations! I bet you knocked their socks off. Thanks so much for the report... I'll definitely make sure I know my application by heart before I go in. My interview is on Friday morning with the assistant director of my Master's specialty. I'm looking forward to it. I have another interview the Monday after with Johns Hopkins, so perhaps my Penn interview will serve as a warmup...!?!? On an unrelated note... did anyone take Lifespan Development online, and if so, where?

What are you wearing to your interview??
I've been thinking about this, too! The advice I received from a NP/mentor was to wear your basic standard interview garb (clean & pressed); make sure that you're comfortable and that you're not aiming to express yourself with what you have on -- you want your talking to do that. Me, I'm imagining what I would wear if I had to present a paper at a professional conference. Projecting myself in that way actually makes me feel more confident.

I think you're right that SF State offers only a BSN.

So... should we all expect to receive our rejection/request for interview letters during the first week of December, as has happened in past years? I don't know if their protocol has changed.

Got the email for an interview yesterday morning, too, for Adult/Gero primary NP. Am trying to decide if I should fly out or do it remotely. Congrats everyone!

Most relevant/useful pre-nursing science class?
I have taken Gen Chem I. I am trying to determine if I should take Gen Chem II or Organic next semester. Has anyone taken Gen Chem II, and if so, what material does it cover? Thank you for providing some suggestions regarding logic classes, though I am not looking to take additional advanced mathematics courses. Philosophy and Psychology classes can also offer the kind of training in inductive reasoning that is useful in nursing practice.

Most relevant/useful pre-nursing science class?
Thanks all for your suggestions. On a personal level -- because I am an older student with a humanities degree and a related career under my belt, I'm primarily seeking advice regarding science classes. I feel confident in my writing and language skills, but perhaps less so in my grasp of the scientific material required to master the technical aspects of nursing. Because I will eventually matriculate as a NP (per the programs I'm applying to), the technical stuff is especially important. However, for other students, taking a range of courses is key. Hodgie and triquee: per both of your thoughts, I'm now trying to decide if I should take GenChem II or Organic Chem next semester. I am certain that I will eventually take O Chem -- if not before I become a RN, then after it -- but I won't have the capability to take both next spring. I imagine that knowing a thing or two about functional groups comes in pretty handy during Pharmacology, and if GenChem II covers those basics, maybe O Chem can wait. kjm84, that overview course you took sounds like it was pretty useful. Biochemistry is on my list of future courses to take. llg, you make a great point about logic, which seems fundamental to know. Unless you study philosophy, one of the only places students come across it is probably in a high school geometry proof. Regardless -- I have to wait for next semester's schedules to come out to see what classes even fit with my schedule, and that may ultimately determine what I end up taking!!

Most relevant/useful pre-nursing science class?
Awesome, ScottE, to hear this. Because I'm applying to ABSN programs I'm not sure if I can squeeze Patho in during the program (since it's usually one of the first courses students take), but I may try to take it beforehand if I can. The general Nutrition course I took over the summer was GREAT. I loved Nutrition science and the material is just so important for nurses to have under their belts.

Hmm... undergrad evaluations, huh? Any chance you went to Hampshire, Evergreen, or SLC? I looked at some of your older posts and the work you're seeking to do in Women's Health is really just awesome. How is Penn supporting you in that? (FWIW, I applied for the AGNP specialty.) I am curious about your fellow students. Do you spend a lot of time with your BSN class, or is it too big to really gel as one unit? Are there many "older" (>30) students? Thanks for your wonderful input & insights!!
