a good chuckle
A 3rd grade teacher friend told me they were discussing what their parents do for work. A little boy said "I think my mom is a cop because I found handcuffs in her nightstand" ?

Feeling anxious
In the beginning I struggled with parent calls. I wrote out scripts for various scenarios and frequent conversations. That really helped me. As far as the secretary goes, have a private conversation with her. With you not there regularly she has to work autonomously. Tell her some of her decisions may backfire in regards to liability and you would like to collaborate with her regarding decisions that are less cut and dry. This could help you both to have a say, which seems important to her.

Medication Room in Boarding School
I would prefer to utilize a pre-packaging company. Meds come in daily pouches and or several times per day pouches on a roll. At Summer camp we used these and each came in their own box with label of student and a MAR. We organized by camper group and boys and girls. Organization would be easy on shelves. It did cost more for the parent up front, but on your end it as priceless.

That was a first
I gave my first glucagon last year, that too was an interesting recovery. Student didn't even remember getting the shot.

It is amazing to see the recovery process after an epi administration. The look of relief. However that is a huge needle and bleeds like crazy!

Teacher Issue...
Ask for time at the beginning of the school year to go over with teachers health office expectations. I tell them do not allow students to call sick from their room or take it upon themselves. If they have questions about why I sent back, they should call/ask me. I then tell them they are taking LIABILITY upon themselves and instead it should be upon you. Not that there is liability, but it sounds legal. What would have happened if panicked mom had a wreck on the way there to find nothing? Teacher would be the one to point to. I would also follow up with the student and mom ASAP. If kid was faking then this is a good lesson for the LD.

Next year - ask admin to let you have time to talk with staff when they are doing their inservice/welcome back sessions. I have a powerpoint with clinic expectations and I keep it light and I keep it collaborative. I also tell them - "when you take it upon yourself to call parent to pick up a student without nurse input, then the liability is on you" not that it is, but it sounds scary IMO.

Weirdest Thing About School Nursing...
Gee, where are you from? Yes the medical advice is frequent however no social communication is odd. I have made some really great acquaintances and friends over the years. Always maintained friendly camaraderie with front office and admin. A thought: the last year and a half has been unordinary. Taking in the last year, I have gotten way more respect and "thank you for what you do" from people I would not usually call overly friendly. Sorry this has been your experience. When I went to the hospital there was a really tight group that was hard to crack into. VERY cliquey on the floor IMO. At school I mix with everyone.

Happy Nurse's week.... I guess
@londonflo appreciate the sentiment, however school nursing is different. Stick to the oncology lane. I was a pediatric oncology nurse before school nursing, I know the stress. You may have a nurse's station to expound your advice to others. For school nurses THIS is our nurse's station and we will protect our thoughts, as negative as they seem to you, and protect our own. Jumping specialties and commenting on topics that you might not understand will only lead to resentment from those groups.

Happy Nurse's week.... I guess
On the actual school nurse day (May 12) I have to drive to a school to turn in year end reports - can't make this up. My allotted time is from 11-12 - DURING PEAK MED TIMES - again, I cannot make this up. So if there is a lunch for me, forget it, I won't be on campus. I'm guessing I will get yet another travel mug/lunch kit from Nursing admin at the drop off.

How do you/did you handle your anti-vaccine parents?
We have "Reason of Conscience" in Texas, covers everything. They will probably get medical exemptions. Don't argue with those parents, not worth the time and it diminishes your relationship.

service animal in a high school
I had a service dog at my school. I felt so bad for that dog getting yanked and drug from the severely autistic student. Watch the lunch room. Students fed "Charlie" who developed diarrhea several times and had to get picked up.
