  1. how do nurses wear nail polish?

And "real nurses who do patient care don't wear nail polish"? Yikes.
  2. how do nurses wear nail polish?

Nurses shouldn't wear nail polish? Really? I know artificail nails are an infection risk, but nail polish? I guess I've never seen these studies... I wear nail polish. And tend to change it every couple of days. Wash your hands. Wear gloves when doin...
  3. Avoid "Karing with Kindess" CNA program

It's just a little unnerving to me. I just think back to when I took the NCELX... there was a lot of material that I learned/studied that wasn't ever covered during the exam, but as a nurse you're expected to know. I guess I'm reflecting more on the ...
  4. Nursing = science. If you really, really hate it, I would look for a different career path. While nursing is a lot of technical skills, a nurse has to know the reasoning behind many of those skills, which includes a very, very large science knowledg...
  5. What jobs did you do before nursing?

Server for 5 years through college for BSN. Also worked as an LPN as soon as I was able to sit for boards. Continued to work as an LPN through school, then as an AD RN and now full time with my BSN. I had a clinical instructor tell me that servers m...
  6. Help, am I overreacting or is this normal???

Yes, it has happened at the hospital I work as well. I have been pulled to be a CNA in a 1:1 for my shift... no big deal, RN pay for NA 1:1 is pretty great. I'd say you're overreacting, IMHO.
  7. Has anyone taken two science coarses in one semester??

Can be done. And typically is by many nursing students.
  8. Bad preceptorship assignment

I had quoted in bold the part that was a little offensive (which I do realize was too sensitive on my part... my apologies). I do understand that you don't get the same clinical experience in LTC as you do in actute care, but when you say "I am plann...
  9. specialty with lowest turnover rate?

I've heard that L&D nurses stay put. I haven't seen a job posting for an L&D nurse since I began looking for nursing jobs!
  10. Frustrated

I had a very hard time in A&P. Acutally, I had to take both A&P I and A&P II twice as I got C+'s the first time around for both classes. Don't worry, you can do it, and you can still be a great nurse despite this. It takes some time to fi...
  11. Bad preceptorship assignment

What?! As someone who worked in a nursing home for 3 years before landing a job in a hospital, I find this a little offensive. Nursing homes provide you with the opportunity to develop time management, being responsible for an outlandish amount of re...
  12. Bad preceptorship assignment

Just my 2 cents... This actually is a pretty good reflection of the job market out there right now. You will probably not get your first choices in jobs. Many new grads are having to take jobs in less-that-desirable (to them) situations to just get e...
  13. Cellphones at work

I agree that for emergencies, one can always call the facility so a cell phone is not necessary to have by your side at all times. However, I will say that my smartphone has come in handy at work a few times. I do have nurse-friendly software that he...
  14. Feeling incompetent

I agree with the previous post. Read to get a basic knowledge of the material as there's no way you're going to learn by strictly reading alone. Then, begin working through an NCLEX review book for the chapters you're studying for (usually broken up ...
  15. Newgrad nervous about nightshift..

I would try talking to your nurse manager about your sleep issues. She may be able to work with you. I think it's a valid concern of yours and worth asking if there's a way to work around it without having to mess with your health. The marathon train...
  16. Straight nights. Flipping is brutal. And nights is pretty fantastic :) Although, I've never been one who liked day shifts anyway. Straight nights is easier on the body than trying to flip between sleep schedules. I know this was later than you wanted...
  17. Area of hospital with minimal vomit...

Definitely not ortho. Postop, many, many, many pts will vomit. At least, that's how it is on my floor. I used to be very afraid of vomit, but I'm ok with it now that I've been on ortho for 9 months haha
  18. My daughter wants to be a nurse

I originally went straight to BSN, but due to lack of space in the nursing program at my university, the local tech school opened spots for BSN students to come in and get their ADN first and then be "grandfathered" back into the university to finish...
  19. New RN going into Ortho/Neuro

I worked in a NH for 3 years before finally getting my first job in the hospital. It happened to be on the Ortho/Joint Replacement floor. While we don't have a lot of neuro, I'm finding that i really enjoy Ortho. It's definitely an interesting specia...
  20. Just got the call...I'll be an ER nurse!

Congratulations! So great to hear an "I got hired story!" :)
  21. Advise for new job at SNF , new grad RN

When I was fresh off of orientation as a new grad at a SNF, I was totally overwhelemed at the patient load. However, it does get more manageable the more familiar you become with your residents and their routines (obviously). It took me a good 6 mont...
  22. DEPRESSED New grad. What are we suppose to do?

I think LinkedIn is a great resource! Great information! However, I do disagree that young people are not mature enough to handle what "mature" nurses handle daily. I am a young nurse and while it's busy, I do think that both mature and young nurses ...
  23. DEPRESSED New grad. What are we suppose to do?

I definitely feel for you. Here are my 2 cents: First of all, this job shortage thing has been going on for awhile and while it may not have been told to you in classes, any kind of research into the field would show that while unemployment is down, ...
  24. Anyone else feel like they got "shafted" in clinicals?

I felt like my clinical experience was pretty solid, except for OB. I was in a group of 8, all of us females. All of my classmates got to see either a live birth or a c-section. Well, I never got to see a c-section for whatever reason (I can't remem...
  25. Best one sentence handoff report

When I was in school, this happened to me ALL the time. But now, when students come to me with report, I can't help but giggle to myself and think ohhh how thorough you are.
