    Dating Coworkers??

I don't think it's a smart idea to date people from your unit. It's not a 'hard and fast rule' for me ... more along the lines of 'prudence'. I'm not as concerned about the whole "fallout if/when...

One year in, yet still making errors -- stupid ones!

I'm not a new grad. Here's some of the stuff that I remember from this year alone: * Pt. came in from nursing home with foley in place. No drainage noted in bag and doc wants a urine analysis. Since...

    Racist Patients

I'm not one of the folks initially listed in on the conversation but as a serious (if amateur) military historian:The concept of "war bride" carries a different meaning for different peoples. For...

    iv push ?

A few thoughts: * I'm an ED/ER nurse. If I suspect a patient will need multiple medications, I start more IV sites. Problem solved * If a med is absolutely contraindicated, then I hold the infusion...
  5. ... some patients die anyway. I try all I can, what more is there to do? Why, lets intubate! And get a ventilator too! One Pressor, Two Pressor, Three Pressor, Four There's nothing left to pump into...

Sometimes, I just don't matter WHAT you do...

Thanks y'all. I'm feeling a little better today (even though I picked up an extra 4 hours and stayed on over for 2 hours more because we were simply swamped - Monday Night Madness!!) I guess I keep...

    What would you have done?

Man Erik! You had a couple shifts miss it before you were chewed out for it. I had my charge nurse chew me out for "not completing the admit paperwork" for two new admissions during the night - while...

Do you always state that you are a nurse?

Thanks for that GREAT tip!! You'd think that an ED nurse like would've thought of that before... :imbar:imbar:imbar:imbar Typing this out while sending an email to my parents to list their meds and...

    Weaker nurses at night?

Like you said, it's your experience. And I'm sorry you have unsupportive colleagues and management. I agree, it makes your day that much harder. Just as it makes my shift harder when I have to "follow"...

Do you always state that you are a nurse?

Ditto that! And that too!!:) The last time I was at a hospital was when a friend of mine had a traumatic fracture. What did I do? Pretty much play 'traffic control' when my friend was in the ED...

    Racist Patients

I still remember a patient I had in the ER last year. He was a Caucasian male brought in for SoB. I'm not a white male. My partner nurse working the pod that night was a female of hispanic extraction....
  16. A few thoughts: * I'm generally not in 'favor' of more wires/cords. We have too many at the bedside as it is and the contstant tangling/untangling is a chore and a half! If we must have cords, anyway...

    No More Fingersticks for Techs!!

My old hospital, techs were permitted to insert foleys and do accu-checks. Now in my ED (different state), techs can do accuchecks - no foleys.

    Male nursing moments.

Agreed. So let's start a discussion right here, on an.com. Can we present a "sample patient" scenario and analyze how our male members versus our female members approach and react to said...

Did you work while in Nursing school?

I worked 2 jobs (averaging 20 hours/week minimum) when I went through school. I DO think that it interfered with my grades but I had no choice. I simply couldn't afford school otherwise.
