  1. I'll check out those programs. I have contacts locally to help with clinical placements but having quality lectures is paramount for me.
  2. Juan, thanks for the info. This is the kind of encouragement and info that is useful, and not the typical bashing that can take place. Because I have fairly extensive amount of critical care experience, and contacts, I'm fairly certain I know what I would do after ACNP training, and where I would work. Do you mind commenting on which programs you feel are more reputable and can be done mostly online with exception to clinical and skill intensives?
  3. I'm also wondering what are the good ACNP programs that can be done via distance based learning. I see a lot of complaints about bad programs, but never hear about good ones.
  4. Wanting to hear peoples experience with the program, and if they would recommend it. I live in California, and would be doing the online program. It appears they have on campus skill intensives which I like the idea of. Waiting for the recruiter to contact me to answer some of my questions.
  5. Hi, tried searching and could not find any reviews of UC Denver np program. Considering acute care program. I like that it's mostly online with campus intesives and that it's from an established, respectable school. Would love to hear from people who have obtained a NP degree from this school and how it operates and the quality of it.
  6. Hello, I have been a RN for several years, and have always thought of going the CRNA direction. I was wondering what the radiation exposure is for CRNA's, and if there are areas or specialties that have lower levels of radiation exposure?
  7. I think people should refrain from discussing how cheaply new grads are willing to work. I'm afraid it will further lower the wages among all RN's.
  8. Juan, thanks for the insightful information. I'm a floor nurse who is thinking about starting NP school, and the issue of obtaining a furnishing license always seemed a bit odd to me. Do you mind if I ask what part of CA you work in, as well as what specialty you're in?
  9. It appears that California SB 1524 has passed. This law should do away with the current law requiring 6 months of supervision before a NP can apply for a furnishing license. Do you know if NP's will be able to obtain a furnishing license if they're an unemployed newly graduated NP. It seems like already having a furnishing license would stream line the process of looking for a job, and make NP's more attractable to possible employers. What does everyone think? 10. The OP mentions Georgetown, which is known for having a very good FNP program. I think it is possible to have accelerated programs that offer a good education. I know that I went to an accelerated BSN program where I learned, and actually did skills that many posters here did not do in their RN programs. Edited because I mentioned the wrong University
  11. BCaliRN, did you graduate from Holy Names, or are you going to a different NP program now? I'm trying to decide where I should apply.
  12. Thanks for the update MBA2RN. Do you plan on attending a different FNP program in the area? What's next for you?
  13. The only information you need to know is how much you are looking to give (50mg) and what you have (125mg/1ml). I was taught to use the formula desire/have x supply. I'll let you figure out how to set it up and see if you can get the correct answer. My advice is that you should not get too concerned with the information that you do not need to know.
  14. This topic has really caught my attention. I am unable to understand why the powers that be are not offering a mechanism to convert an old credential to a newer one. This seems like a way of dividing the profession. I see that the FNP credential will be up for review in the next several years. Many nurses will be starting FNP programs in 2012. Based on the information we now know, do you think there is any reason to hold off on attending a FNP program until we see what changes are made?
  15. I posted to the wrong thread. Message deleted. Sorry.
  16. MBA2RN, please keep in touch and let me know your impression of the first semester.
  17. A physician once told me that he asks his patients, "do you have sex with boys, girls, or both?" He said that for younger clients it is vital information so that he can help assess for risk factors and provide education on safe sex practices.
  18. Congratulations!
  19. SF415, did you hear back regarding your interview?
  20. I'm considering the FNP program at HNU. How was the lab conducted, and what skills were learned? Did you feel ready for clinicals and practice once you graduated from the program?
  21. Thank you for your response. As someone who is an RN, I want to make sure I make the right decisions with continuing my education. Glad to hear that you're learning differential diagnosis.
  22. In regards to post #10 and #11, I don't doubt what you are saying. Personally, I believe the answer is probably situation dependent. Some new grad programs require you to submit your clinical time in a specific format. One nurse recruiter told me that she prefers to see clinical hours listed. Unfortunately, it appears that nurse managers and those in HR are sometimes looking for something different. The truth is that you have to make it through HR to get the interview. If in doubt, you can always check with that facility.
  23. It seems like people are asking about NP programs and finding preceptors. I was wondering what actually happens at the FNP or adult NP clincals. Would some people be willing to give a rundown of what happens at FNP or adult NP clinicals? If you could also include what kind of offices you did clinicals at, what skills you used, and how you advanced in terms of autonomy I would appreciate it. What are the most common illnesses you see and treat during your clinicals. For us pre-NP students, I think it'd be interesting to see what your average day at clinicals looks like. Thank you
  24. Hi everyone, This is my first post on the forum. I did a search, and it seems like there isn't very much information regarding Holy Names University's (located in Oakland, CA) FNP program. Has anybody here either attended the program or worked with their students? After speaking with their adviser, it seems like the program is set up well and they are quite flexible with clinical placements. I'd like to spend some clinical time in an emergency department because I think it'd be a great place to learn certain skills and see how to treat medical problems that one might not see or treat in their office. Anyways... I'd like to hear some feedback regarding their program and specifically how it compares to other Bay Area programs such as SMU or UCSF. It seems like HNU's schedule is very friendly for those students who choose to work during the program.
