  1. Undecided on what school to attend in california????

College of the Redwoods is only a year long, like the private schools, and its a community college, so pretty cheap. I personally would stay away from private LVN programs, they are so expensive and honestly the pay isnt worth it. Its a good living a...
  2. New grad took unwanted position, now what?

I wouldnt pass up the opportunity, just talk to your DON and let her know that this is a great opportunity, if your offered the job. I am sure you will do great, but dont get your hopes up. Although being called for an interview in my experience is a...
  3. Switching my major from nursing to FACS

I beleive a nurse case worker must have a bachelors in nursing and bedside nursing experience. I dont think another bachelors will help you obtain that job. A Nurse case worker is very different than a social worker. You should research the two job d...
  4. It kinda sucks that we always have to think about liability... I understand why, but sometimes it would be nice to just take care of people.
  5. New Grad nurse @SNF...now on verge of quitting.

The SNF's get funding from medicare, so a licensed nurse must give medications. The patient load is very high and near impossible, yes something has to change. But please dont judge all SNF nurses, because most of us love our residents and do our bes...
  6. shorter time, bigger debt...smaller debt, longer time

A hard decision, but if I could have gone into a BSN program I would have. Is this a private school? It sounds a little expensive if its just 5 semesters, if it is private, can you apply to a public BSN program, or go through an ADN program, because ...
  7. I think its really sad that people think that 90+ year olds need to be treated like children when they are of sound smind. She has so much life experience and wisdom and thats why I love the elderly, you can always learn something. I am a beleiver in...
  8. Will a past DUI affect taking the NCLEX/Getting hired?

You will have to look on the state board website. In many states you will be able to pay all the fees and take the boards, but when you pass and pay for your license you will have to probably write a letter explaining the situation and how you have c...
  9. Hiring without a License?

You need to call them, unless they arent planning on putting you on the floor right away. I think its best to be honest though.
  10. Just want to say that maybe some people are not so upset about having to work harder, maybe they feel it is unfair and unsafe for the elderly and disabled people who live in LTC. Its not always whining, sometimes people really care about their reside...
  11. Who can challenge the NCLEX-PN?

I knew of a couple people in a bachelors degree program who challenged the LVN exam after 3 semester, or maybe 4 I cant remember.
  12. Be a nurse or not?! HELP ME PLEASE!

I agree with the other posts, please dont become a nurse. So many people are becoming nurses because it pays good, but it really doesnt pay all that well. Nurses need to be able to see the gross stuff and deal with a lot of stress on top of that. Do ...
  13. Ahhh, shouldn't have done that....

I love them all but there are certain ones that just find a place in your heart!
  14. new graduate LPN job .....help plzzzzzzzz

Its weird in some states its like that. Most LTC's in California will hire new grads no problem. I was a CNA for 3 years before an LVN so I worked got in at the same facilty. Just keep looking and go in to talk to the DON, that usually helps a lot.
  15. Made an error :'( unable to move on

Think of this as a message from up above to not do it again, nothing happened to the pt. We all look back and think "how did I not see that?" I think that this bothering you so much means you really are a good nurse!
  16. It doesnt sound like your open to a solution. Bottom line you need to contact them some way. Maybe you can call on your lunch break or something? Maybe you can take a personal day ( I know its hard to take a day off and lose the money, but you also p...
  17. ER Wasted

I would look for another job regardless, someone will hire you. Its not right that people think that nurses are there to take their anger out on. I once heard some radio guy complain about how rude the nurses were, well no one started rude, they got ...
  18. Where do the damn pillows go?

Its amazing how things disappear, I worked in a SNF and when I started there we had an digital thermometer, well they kept disappearing, so they got little alarms on them and if they went out the building it would go off. Well, guess what it didnt wo...
  19. Being a brand new nurse was scary enough with the 3 years of experience as a CNA. I was at least comfortable in the setting and working with patients. But I know great nurses who never did anything in healthcare before, so just letting youknow it get...
  20. Nurses writing Scripts for Doctors

Im confused..do you mean these nurses just decide what order they want and write it down, and hope the doc says ok. Or do you mean they get a telephone or fax order and write it down? In California, we can take verbal, phone, or faxed orders and the ...
  21. "6 months notice is customary"

6 months??? Seriously, and tell your new job you wont start for 6 months, thats just not possible. It sounds like this family is nervous about you leaving and they are showing it through anger. Just be professional and do the best you can, you should...
  22. The Debt Rant

I almost went to a private school, and something told me I shouldnt because of the amount of debt, and I have decided to wait it out at the CC. This is a lot of debt, and it can be scary, but just remember its not the end, and you will be able to get...
  23. LPN... what are my chances?

I agree about the CNA first. It will help you a lot, and you can get a feel if its the area you want to work in. Just we warned being a CNA is a lot different than and LVN, but at least you will be in the field and work with LVN's, and have the patie...
  24. My CNAs dont seem to respect me...

It sounds like management doesnt back you up. The first LTC facility I worked in as a nurse never followed up on write ups and wouldnt fire anyone because it was so hard to find aides at all, we were always short. Where I work now, the aides are awes...
  25. Passing narcs with the med tech?

Thats terrifying!!! I mean yes its easy to read the medication and give it out, but there are circumstances in which you dont give medication, Like the above post, and while some of it is common sense (or at least you would think), a lot of it you ne...
