  1. my mother had a colonoscopy and afterwards her doctor told her she needed surgery. she told my mom she should 1st get medically cleared by a doctor affiliated with that hospital she was going to have the surgery. so my mom found a doctor affiliated with that hospital and got checked up. she was fine to have the surgery. that doctor faxed over everything to the surgeon's office. the surgeon called my mom and said she got the forms and she needs to just make an appointment with her receptionist in which she did. the receptionist called my mom regarding the appointment for her surgery. she got a letter today stating the time and what she needs to do. in that letter it said she needs to be medically cleared by the clinic in that hospital. the doctors office is closed right now so i will call tomorrow to ask, but i wanted to know now, if she needs TWO clearances. she got the 1st clearance about 3 weeks ago. is it just a mistake?
  2. I'm a nursing student and we need to do a teaching plan during our clinicals. I decided to do a colostomy care since I had 2 patients with colostomy and it was very interesting. it would be great if i had the actual simulator body to show the stoma but can't afford it as well as the bag. where can i get great info?
  3. i'm doing a nursing care plan. the diagnosis is disturbed body image related to biophysical presence of stoma. for the symptoms i put that the patient turned the head away while doing abdominal assessment, liked to be covered at all times, refused to answer questions regarding the surgery. as for the self care agencies and deficits, what do i put here that will go along with the diagnosis?
  4. never asked YOU to do my homework for me. I just wanted some ideas. did I ask YOU to look up information for me and do the presentation? NO. this is a forum where we can help each other out. I'm sure YOU needed some help when you were ONCE A STUDENT. some people are so ignorant.

  6. i'm taking gi/gu right now and we need to do a teaching plan related to the course. it has to be 5-10minutes and it will be during clinicals in front of our clinical members (~8 people including the professor). what are some ideas i can do that would be very interesting and not boring? like if it's on diabetes, it has to be one part of diabetes, like the food or what causes it.
  7. i have to fill out a shift assessment page as a nursing student. what do i write for activity if my patient is paralyzed from the waist down? she goes from chair to bed using a ez lift machine.
  8. I am in my 2nd level at nursing school. It was my 1st day at my med-surg clinicals yesterday. This is my second clinical, but I get nervous every time I go to the hospital. I am very shy around new people and tense up extremely during the pre and post conference when we share about our patients. even if i have to share with only 9 people including my clinical professor, i get so nervous. we had to give a brief description about our patients yesterday during post conference, i got so nervous, i stuttered so much. can i still be a great nurse even if i'm shy and introverted? how do i stop dreading post-conference?
  9. I am in my 2nd level at nursing school. It was my 1st day at my med-surg clinicals today. This is my second clinical, but I get nervous everytime I go to the hospital. 10. i'm in my level 2 right now, for gi/gu class. i start clinicals tomorrow at a med-surg floor. although this will be my 2nd clinical, i'm quite nervous. what are some tips for med-surg floors?
  11. I started level 2 and I am taking Gi/Gu right now. My professor said to practice a lot of Nclex questions. I was wondering what are some study tips to do well for this class? I also start clinicals next week. I have a hard time understanding things by just reading. I believe I am more of a visual learner. Can any nurses help me please?
  12. My mom is having a surgery at the end of this month called robotic rectoplexy. Her doctor said he will probably stay 5 days in the hospital after the surgery. She didn't tell me all the details. I was wondering if anyone can help me. I read online that she might have a foley for a few days. Is there anything I can do for my mom? My mom won't have a shower for 5 days, is there something I can do for her? like what kind of wipes can i buy her to help her clean up and feel refreshed without worrying about any bacteria or infection? i read she might be on a clear liquid diet. i'm sure the hospital will provide her, but is there something i can make at home that can be considered clear liquid?
  13. My parents are 60 years and although they have to wait 5 more years until medicare, I was just wondering how the program worked. I checked the website and it said they needed to pay medicare taxes to receive the medicare without having to pay anything. My dad works as a limousine driver for a company. The company does not take out taxes so my dad pays for the taxes when he files for the tax return. How will medicare work in this case? They don't have health insurance right now because they can't afford it. Is there anyway someone can help me? My parents do pay for taxes, but they pay when filing the tax returns.
  14. I took my mom to a proctologist because part of her rectum came out after she has bowel movements and there was bleeding. The doctor asked her to push in the bathroom at the office so she can see, but my mom was unable to. She asked to take a picture to make sure she can diagnose it as rectal prolapse. If so, she needs surgery. The doctor saw that we didn't have insurance so she mentioned charity care. She said she wouldn't get paid at all, in which, I felt terrible, but there was no choice since we cannot afford it ourselves. We went to the hospital to apply, but the lady said she needs to 100% okay that we are getting the surgery to apply. My mom and I are going back to let the doctor know and bring in the pictures. Does anyone know about the surgery. Like what the process is, how long she needs to stay in the hospital, post-op, etc. also, anything on charity care? Thank you.
  15. My parents are 58 years old and are uninsured. They cannot afford healthcare. They live in NJ. I'm planning to go to my county's social services to see if they can get medicaid. Does anyone know any specifics on medicaid? My dad works long hours as a limousine driver and for his taxes, he earned $100,000 last year. However, after all the deductions his adjusted gross income is only $22,500. His company does not have insurance so my dad is pretty much self-employed which states it in his tax return. They don't own a home, just rent. Everything goes out so he pretty much earns 22,500. My mom only worked part-time and didn't earn much but together the adjusted gross income is $23,000 and they have one dependent. I read on the website that they take the total income before the deductions so does this mean they take in that my dad earned $100,000 before the deductions? My parents only have $1000 in their bank account. Can they still get medicaid? even though my dad's gross income was that high, after deductions it's only 23,000.
  16. My mom had to go to a specialist doctor (proctogloist- colon and rectum doctor) because every time she had a bowel movement, she felt part of her rectum come out. I found online that it was something called rectal prolapse. She doesn't have insurance and cannot afford healthcare, but I took her to see the doctor. The doctor asked her to push to see the rectum come out, but couldn't see it. She asked me to take a picture of it because she needs to be 100% sure. She saw that we didn't have insurance so she asked us how we would pay and said out of pocket. She asked if we were able to pay and there's something called charity care in which we apply through the hospital. She said we should apply since my mom might require surgery. She said it takes a few weeks for the papers to be processed, and then she made a statement. She said, unfortunately she wouldn't get paid since it's through charity care, and I felt bad and embarrassed. She said to come back in a few weeks when we get the charity care approved and with the picture. I feel horrible that the doctor wouldn't be paid at all when she had to perform surgery and a colonoscopy. Is there any other way I can do something?
  17. My mom has an appointment today with a proctologist (colon and rectal doctor). She has no insurance since we cannot afford the coverage. She really needs to visit the specialist. I know the doctor works with two other doctors in the office. I have a feeling it's going to cost more than $300 and I'm just afraid because this is a lot of money. Do you know how much they will maybe charge my mom? Do specialty doctors have a payment plan if we cannot pay the full amount today?
  18. I work part-time as a patient safety attendant. We sit with patients who are suicidal, confused, depressed, fall risk, etc. I know we literally "sit" at times, but it is still a job and I took this job to help me during nursing school. I work at different floors all the time. One shift, I overheard the nurse say that all she does is watch the tv. I was with a patient who was a fall risk at a cancer floor. He had the news channel on even from the night before and when I asked him if he wanted me to turn it off, he said no, he likes that channel. He slept most of the time while I was there, so since the tv was in front of me, I saw it at times. At another shift, the nursing assistant told the nurses in behind the counter where they sit in front of the computers that she was going to relieve me for lunch, and they said,"go relieve her from her chair and giggled." I just went on my break, but I was very offended. I know we can't do much, but it is still a job, and if the nurses think it's so worthless, why call the sitters to sit with the patients?
  19. i'm in level 1 and clinical is almost over. our clinical instructor said to bring in something for the nurses at the floor since they were so helpful. we were going to bring in snacks. i think it's also a good idea to bring our professor something too. she was very sweet and helpful. what are something we can get her?
  20. i'm a level 1 nursing student and there's about 3 days left of clinicals. my clinical professor told our group to get something for the nurses at the floor since they were so helpful. one girl is going to bring brownies, another one said cookies. i wanted to bring something in too but i wasnt sure want. i didn't want to bring drinks. what are some things i can also bring for the nurses that they would like?>
