  1. Weeding out of nursing students

I can only say that, on the unit, when there is difficulty amongst staff members or difficulty involving physician conduct, or difficulty in specific patient care situations, there is always the "chain of command" option. If your nursing school is no...
  2. Weeding out of nursing students

Anyone ever dismissed from a nursing school after "failing" an assessment skills competency because of getting one blood pressure "wrong"? Just curious. I am a nurse, and it may be about to happen to my (very competent, already has one degree) daught...
  3. Jehovah Witness RNs

As one of Jehovah's Witnesses for many years, and an RN, I take certain exception to your use of the word "REQUIRE" in all caps. As Witnesses, we are guided by scriptural principles, and ultimately by our consciences. Our "religious leaders" provide ...
  4. Nurses who DON'T work in a hospital, what do you do?

I heartily second the thanks! Nurses are an amazing group of people.
  5. Interviews in Colorado springs area....any advice?

Don't mean to badmouth Penrose, but when I did clinical rotations there, the nurses were pretty stressed on the units I worked. But then, they were med-surg, and I think med-surg is just that way. However, I do think the ratios are higher at Penrose....
  6. Interviews in Colorado springs area....any advice?

Sorry took so long to reply. They will provide you with $100 for uniforms, but you can also buy your own. They are solid navy blue. You probably already know this by now. Again, Welcome to Memorial.:welcome:
  7. Always check your IV lines to be sure they are connected to the patient, especially if there are several lines running. Just had the embarrassing experience of administering IV Pitocin to the floor under my patient's bed for a couple of hours. No won...
  8. Interviews in Colorado springs area....any advice?

Congratulations! With the opening of the North facility, perhaps you will be less busy than before on Ortho/Neuro. Are you working days or nights? Come down and visit L & D some night after shift change. Ask for Jan. I'd enjoy meeting you. Look f...
  9. Interviews in Colorado springs area....any advice?

Overall, I think Memorial employees are satisfied with their jobs. The hospital seems to be making efforts to weed out those who may be "great doctors and nurses" but who treat fellow workers or patients poorly. The new North facility has some issues...
  10. Interviews in Colorado springs area....any advice?

Working at Memorial as new grad Birth Center nurse. However, did do clinical rotation on ortho/neuro. Staff is very nice, pace is really fast. 32 beds, 50% discharge rate/day (15-16 discharged, virtually same number admitted daily). Patients stay 1-2...
  11. Good Nursing Joke....

Very cute. Lucky for me I'll be working the Birth Center - not too many testicles...
  12. Caring for Jehovah's witnesses

Congratulations on pursuing that BSN! I am a 53 y/o JW who just completed that process. I passed NCLEX (whew!) and start a new job on L & D floor at local hospital here in Colorado Springs. Your concerns were indeed answered very well by the othe...
  13. "Not dealing with a full deck" appears to describe mental illness. "Slimeball" is a pejorative term that I am surprised a professional nurse would stoop to without being fully apprised of all details of the individual's behavior and possible reasons ...
  14. We lost a mom to HELLP!!!

I know it's been awhile since this thread was started, but I came across it and wanted to respond. I am a senior nursing student and have finally decided that L & D is where I want to be, despite the "bad bad bad" that can happen. In my fifty plu...
  15. Nclex Nightmare

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: Many happy faces to celebrate your passage. Work hard, be safe, care for others, but don't forget to care for yourself. Rock on!:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
  16. Nclex Nightmare

I will have to go through this as well this coming May, but I was under the impression (source: one of my instructors, I think ) that the NCLEX is an interactive exam. This supposedly means that, if you get a question right, the computer is programm...
  17. i hope this isn't a duplicate reply, as i was typing one a minute ago that "disappeared" off my screen...anyway, i am a student who has cared for a few fresh post-op patients on the ortho/neuro floor. i was wondering whether you felt there was some f...
  18. taking students, precepting

AMEN!!!!! And every one of my clinical rotation cohorts would say the same. You who have preceded us - virtually every nurse I have worked with - are often ALL WE HAVE to give us what we need to learn to be good nurses. Books and lectures CANNOT do t...
  19. The minute my friends and neighbors found out I was a nursing student, this started. I am a fifty-something mom of three and everyone assumes I already know something...That is a GREAT reply for me to practice in anticipation of being a nurse too lon...
  20. Nurse, There's a Spider in My Throat

You can find critters in almost any line of work...back in college (WAAAYY back) I worked at IHOP and used to have to chase cockroaches out of booths. The worst one was finding half a cockroach in a guy's omelette (no kidding). Needless to say, he wa...
  21. You know you are in nursing school when ctxt

What our future patients would think if THEY could read all these great and completely true comments from their nurses' school experiences! Whether we survive it or not, we are all better human beings for the experience, wouldn't you say? Deep, rest...
  22. You know you are in nursing school when ctxt

:uhoh21: You know you're really in nursing school when your family is surprised when you are home... ...and when people you know outside of nursing school greet you by saying, "Wow, you look tired" but nobody in your class can tell how you look (or ...
  23. You know you are in nursing school when ctxt

You know you are in nursing school but wonder what good it is doing when you are so busy you forgot to check the posted grades for the last two exams in two different classes, and can't REMEMBER what either exam contained, to say nothing of the quest...
  24. 38 too old for school?

Dear AKANARN: Too old? I am 51, I have a 21 year old daughter who just graduated from the same university I am attending, a 19 year old son, and an 8 year old daughter. I am a junior in a BSN program and I will be 53 when I graduate. I think you are...
  25. Blatant Nursing "No-No's"........what's your worst???

Cindy: YA THINK??? I haven't graduated yet, but if I had never even been to nursing school, I think I would have known better than to stuff a tube up a screaming patient's nose. I guess that's what they call "critical thinking"....I am doing clinical...
