CRNA shadowing in Austin ?
Hey jessmajek, I asked for my unit educator's help-- she got me in contact with the Chief CRNA at my hospital and I was able to set up a time to shadow from there.

TCU Jan 2019/SRNA advice in general
Hi all! Glad to have found this group here and looking forward to seeing some of you post acceptance in a few months! :) I am am finishing my application now, just waiting on shadow verification form and need to hustle and get PALS. This will be my first time applying and I'm crossing all fingers and toes! So nervous! I have nearly five years experience in MICU and Neuro ICU at a level one teaching facility, GRE 306 V156/Q150 and still waiting on AW score, 3.6 BSN gpa but a weak science gpa from my ADN. CCRN since 2016.

Nursing Classes Ranked by Difficulty and Ability to Double Up
I believe they used the percentage. I never had feedback from my coach regarding anythzing within Shadow Health so I honestly don't know if they review them in detail or not. Those essay type questions were always the same within each system and I found myself using the same verbiage each time.

Nursing Classes Ranked by Difficulty and Ability to Double Up
Diggerdave, You'll use Shadow Health for your virtual assessments. Once you finish your assessment, look at the feedback and use it to complete your assessment again. It takes a bit more time, but you're able to be much more thorough with your line of questioning and get highest marks the second time around.

Nursing Classes Ranked by Difficulty and Ability to Double Up
I took Health Assessment and Management together. They are both tedious but it was completely doable. Vulnerable Populations would be good to double with Assessment as the class is front-loaded and the bulk of work is done in the first three weeks, whereas as Assessment was much steadier.

New grad MICU
Hi BeautifulDisaster-- I'm a recent grad (August '13) and began my orientation in the MICU of a L1 trauma center last October so I'm still new, too. As said before, it can be very overwhelming coming into this setting fresh out of school but take each and every opportunity as a learning experience. Ask tons of questions, do your best to develop a routine for yourself once you feel comfortable, listen in on rounds and study disease processes. Learning doesn't stop once you graduate. Read journal articles and become a member of a professional association-- they offer tons of free CEUs and EBP that helps us daily. Feel out the nurses in your unit that you feel you can trust-- as far as experience and clinical knowledge go-- and use them as a resource. Jump in to help anywhere you can-- be it a code, a rapid, or just turning and cleaning a coworker's pt. And above all, remember why you became a nurse and what drew you to this profession. There are some really hard days in nursing and you might often feel defeated as a new nurse. It gets better and easier. Good luck to you

It's about time!
Verbiage taken directly from TX HB705: (1) "Emergency room personnel" means a person in a hospital emergency department who, in the course and scope of employment or as a volunteer, provides services for the benefit of the general public during emergency situations. (2) "Emergency services personnel" includes fire fighters, emergency medical services personnel as defined by Section 773.003, Health and Safety Code, and other individuals who, in the course and scope of employment or as a volunteer, provide services for the benefit of the general public during emergency situations. Bill Text: TX HB705 | 2013-2014 | 83rd Legislature | Introduced | LegiScan They way the bill is written does seem to inlcude only the ED-- interesting.

Words of wisdom for a new grad starting in the ICU?
Hello! I'm a new grad (Aug '13) and have just passed boards at the beginning of the month. I've accepted a position in an ICU internship beginning in October in a 70-bed ICU at a L1 trauma center and am curious if any of you wonderful nurses have pearls of wisdom-- not necessarily what to expect etc as programs vary, more so things you know now that you'd wish you'd known as a new grad? Any advice for a newby is welcome. Thanks! :)

The candidate currently has test results on hold?
I got the same pop-up and passed. It just means they're reviewing your exam a bit further-- could be for finishing quickly, palm scans not working correctly, etc. I tested on Friday and got my quick results on the following Tuesday after my results being on hold. I know the wait will be tough, but hang in there and you'll know soon :)

Flipping Out!!
I got my results this afternoon-- I passed! Made the wait worth it :) Keeping fingers crossed for Type1Nurse2b and nursemami4!

Flipping Out!!
Makes me feel silly when you put it into perspective. Foot in mouth :)

Social help, not fitting in
linap, I had to take a second glance at who wrote this post because it looked nearly the same as a blog post I wrote first semester about my own experience :) It did take a little time, but as some pp have said you'll find your groove. I found it easier to get to know my classmates once we started clinicals as the groups became smaller. Don't forget, too, that the folks in the cliques might be a little insecure and are sticking to what they know for the time being. Everything has a way of working out, don't sweat it and too much now and focus on this great adventure. Best of luck to you!

Flipping Out!!
Oh goodness! Same deal here: I didn't feel like I rocked it but had a good helping of SATA and got cut-off at 75. From what I've read here and elsewhere, results could be held for any number of reasons ranging from palm ID scan issues, getting up without raising your hand, finishing abnormally early etc. They'll review your test and if everything checks out you'll get your results. The hold pop-up isn't indiciative of pass/fail at this point so keep your chin up, breath deeply, and test your patience the very best you can while you await results. We're waiting with you-- you got this :)

Plagerizing yourself?
My school breaks it down like this-- "If a student turns in a paper for two classes without gaining consent from both instructors, it is considered an act of dishonesty and, therefore, an act of cheating (i.e. receiving double credit for a single assisgment)". Cover yourself and ask to be on the safe side.

Working during a BSN program...Yes no maybe???
I'm currently finishing up my first semester of an ADN program and work 40 hours (4 10s in the evening) weekly. I'm on the go 7 days a week between work and school and I'll admit it can be pretty exhausting but completely doable. There's no harm in trying out the school-work balance for a bit to see if it works-- I think that's the only true way to know if it's right for you. I just keep looking to the future and knowing that I can rest easy once I'm done in another year and a half keeps me going. Best of luck to you!

Best time to buy textbooks
Costs might go down if you try buying nearer to the end of this semster. By then people will be selling back their texts to bookstores or getting rid of them online so bargains might be more competitive.

New Nursing Students- Spring/Fall 2012
I too am starting my ADN in the spring and am beyond excited. We've had our orientation already and toured the facility...which is amazing! Have most of my paperwork, immunizations done etc and bought all my books--really hurt the wallet by the way lol-- so now I get to finish out the last of this semester and enjoy the break before spring starts :)

Help with a "Position" paper
Maybe concerning a women's choice against induction/epidural/cesarean during the birthing process against medical advise? I recently saw a documentary "The Business of Being Born" and those topics were mentioned...really interesting. I'm not in school yet so my exposure to other possible topics is zero :) Hope it helps.

Low income mothers.. what teachings can I provide them with?
I haven't yet begun my nursing program, but I know that in my area WIC offers nutrition and parenting classes to mothers who are in need and have tons of resources in the community. You could gather literature from them, maybe even churches that offer community support and put it out there. Giving them freedom of choice by saying "Hey, if you're interested there is this great --- class that is free/low cost" rahter than implying they need it might be a way to get your point across without being hurtful.
