  1. Hi all, I have a question about A&P I and II. In general, after approx. the first one-third of A&P I semester, after a lot of the students drop out, is there a minor change in grading or testing of labs, or perhaps more direction/cooperatio...
  2. I am in my early 50's. I am in classes now and worried that being in my 50's as a nurse will keep me from getting a good nursing job. I guess that "officially" hospitals and employers can't discriminate based on age. But what will REALLY happen?...
  3. Nurses' personal medical records

When I become a nurse, will I still feel my own medical records are private? Starting nursing school soon. I hope other Hospital medical personnel don't just look up their co-workers medical records. How much privacy do nurses have with their perso...
  4. Hello all, I start Sentara's Care Partner class right away and want to be a Care Partner for a year or two. Also, I am taking the last 3 prereqs. for Sentara's BSN program, to hopefully start on the BSN in 1 1/2 years. Question: When I become a Ca...
  5. Patient Care Asst - what additional cert.'s should I obtain?

Yes, I took the Care course and started with them recently. It's a good way to go.
  6. Without going to school for an R.N. degree, what certifications could I get that would increase my pay as a Hospital-based Patient Care Assistant eventually? I am almost finished with hospital-based patient care assistant training, and am looking dow...
  7. What age will you retire?

Retiring? Never....(hopefully, not until my mid-70's); Recently started working at a hospital in my mid-50's. GLAD to have group medical insurance instead of very-expensive, self-employed health insurance, glad to have accumulating vacation time, gl...
  8. Patient Care Asst - what additional cert.'s should I obtain?

    thanks
  9. A & P 1 -- Fall 2010

Are you able to order your book soon so you can start studying? I studied for at least 3 - 4 weeks before the class began, and took notes from the textbook, and it helped a lot. At least I had heard the terms before. I did that for chapters 1 - 4....
  10. A & P 1 -- Fall 2010

Some students like the A&P coloring books. Go to Barnes & Nobles and look at several different ones and see if a particular coloring book suits you. How about flash cards? Some students like those.
  11. A & P 1 -- Fall 2010

Start studying the book now! And as someone else suggested, perhaps the Dummies book or something similar also. Our community college uses the test bank for lecture tests, which can be hard - they often pick obscure, one-line comments in the book an...
  12. (Prerequisites student here, just looking at job descriptions for future) For instance, while looking at available jobs, I see Rehab or Stepdown or Surgery Unit as the Department Description, but there is a "Medicine" Unit. What type of unit is tha...
  13. What is a "Medicine Unit" in a hospital

Thanks to you all! That paints a picture of the type of patient that floor would handle.
  14. Nursing Home Blues

This made me cry. This precious woman and her story are so touching. You have a REAL gift for writing as well as comforting your patients. Thank you very much for sharing it.
  15. Anatomy and Physiology I and II - drop out rate

I am having a challenge with spending hours studying for lab, when I would rather make sure I learn all of the pages of lecture material. But I can't let up on the lab grade either, as of course the lecture & lab grades are combined for the cour...
  16. Anatomy and Physiology I and II - drop out rate

Hi EricHCC, Did your A & P professor say ahead of the time that they would grade on a curve? Or did their syllabus quote the standard grading system, and the curve was not discussed but just happened? A lot of comments on here seem to state tha...
  17. Anatomy and Physiology I and II - drop out rate

I am glad for you. It sounds like a great bunch of students in a great school. (ignore the faint voice in the background; just me jumping off of a cliff)
  18. Anatomy and Physiology I and II - drop out rate

I agree, the teachers are there to teach, not slack up. At least, I am glad I love the material. It is very interesting. Chemistry was dry, in my opinion - at least A&P is interesting and makes the hours of study go faster :)
  19. Anatomy and Physiology I and II - drop out rate

    hmmmmmm. Interesting! Thanks
  20. A & P 1 -- Fall 2010

In my opinion, I think there is a huge difference between Human Anatomy prerequisite (no lab), which I took last semester, and the Anatomy I with lab, which I am currently taking. Perhaps part of that is a different teacher. Also, I spend HOURS extr...
  21. A & P 1 -- Fall 2010

A few years ago, I took a years' worth of Chemistry (with labs) in a summer, at a community college. It was a miserable experience. Or depending on how you look at it, I got it over with. My grades in it were not stellar; I earned a C and a B. It ...
  22. Sentara Care Partner to BSN question about specialty

Llg, Thank you very much for taking the time to give me this input. It makes a lot of sense. It will help in the long term. :)
  23. am i too old?

Go for it! I am in my early 50's and taking my prereq's for RN. I start the Nurse Assistance Course in a few months (I agree with Saysfaa about considering Nurse Assistant). So I will work parttime to gain experience and make a little money as a N...
  24. How to find out Sentara salaries?

Hi! This may be a dumb question, but I just assumed that I could go on the Sentara site where the jobs are listed and see salary ranges for Care Partner, etc. Job duties are listed, but salaries are not listed. I am taking prereqs. now for nursin...
  25. How to find out Sentara salaries?

Thanks also for this information. I will be gaining experience as a care partner and enter the bridge to BSN program a few months after that. I have zillions of questions. Still doing prereqs. right now. I really appreciate this information!! :)
