    Weekend Nurse

I think working 7 days per week is a bad idea. You need time to yourself to refresh and sleep! I think if you want to invest in the time and effort of nursing, you need to focus on nursing. Nursing school is a lot of work. Nursing itself is a lot of ...

What was your first Nursing job?

My very first job was a small little ICU at a tiny hospital. Not much support, quit after 6 weeks. Then I moved to Minnesota and got a job in an allergy and asthma clinic and I went part time to work at a school part time. Now I work full time as a s...

    Fairview Ridges RN Salary

Did you end up getting the job? I have almost 2 years of nursing (non hospital) experience and I've applied 3 times and I still haven't gotten an interview. I did my senior capstone in L&D. Any tips?

    This is a new one...

ha! Oh goodness! I would probably look at that person with bewildered expression. Maybe they would take the hint. Re: teachers believing in a school nurse's powers above and beyond. I once had a gym teacher ask me if a child's leg was broken. I didn'...

    Choosing between prek-8 or HS?

Howdy! I am at 2 schools this year, and it's been difficult. I've had to switch days to accommodate the health assistant's absences at both schools. One day, both of my health assistants were gone. I have back-up staff trained, but I felt badly that ...

    School Nurse Salary?

I'm in MN, too. I make $43,000 on the teacher's contract/union. I have a BSN, no MSN quite yet.
  8. Wow. All of this is so true! I love being a school nurse. I love having the time off that I get. It's a very flexible job. However, there are frustrations. Sometimes it's just good to vent. Then you realize how good this job is! Of course, there are ...

    Ice Packs = Candy

I don't know about you all, but ice packs are super popular in my health offices. Students want them for everything. Apparently ice packs are the magic cure-all.... I don't let the kids leave with them. They then become toys to play with during class...
  10. I feel frustrated about those things, too. It's definitely a common theme that I'm experiencing, and this is my first year as a school nurse.
  11. I took a pay cut within nursing. I am now a school nurse, and I absolutely love the job and the schedule! I don't mind one bit.

    Ice Packs = Candy

Yeah, I have learned to say "you don't need an ice pack for that, buddy". It's helped.

    Ice Packs = Candy

I only have the reusable ones. If I let the kiddos leave with them, I'd never get them back!

    Medication Organization

For PRNs, I use labeled pencil boxes. Like these: I use a sticker label and put the students' names on it. I also have lego plastic boxes for bigger PRNs, like EpiPens or neb tubing:

    Associate vs Bachelor Nursing

BSN prepared nurses learn the same information as ADN prepared nurses. They take the same NCLEX. However, with ADN programs, many of them are bridge programs so that students can earn credits to become a LPN. They can then sit for the NCLEX-PN and be...

What does my ATI Fundamentals score mean?!

A score of 88 in the 99th national percentile is very good, considered well above average. Here (word for word) is what an ATI level 3 is: -expected to exceed NCLEX standards in the content area -should demonstrate a high level of knowledge in this c...

School Nurses, How are you Paid??

I'm on a contract for 40 hours per week. I could choose either to get paid during the school year only or get paid during the summer. I have money taken out of each biweekly paycheck to cover the 11 weeks of summer.

    how's this for backwards

I live in MN and it's near impossible to get a job in a hospital without experience! I tried when I first moved here. In Nebraska, where I came from, I could easily get a hospital job as a new grad.
  21. Work where you find a job! As a new graduate, I could get jobs on medical-surgical floors but not much else. Some people in my class got lucky and they were hired onto specialty units, such as ED or OR. That was due to having connections or completin...

    how long does ATT takes

It took about 4-5 weeks to get my ATT. I took the NCLEX in Nebraska. Usually it takes a few weeks, at least, to process the application.

    Not Enough Backup-CPS?

I would definitely report this as soon as possible. It is up to CPS to investigate once you make a report in good faith.
  24. My school has around 680 kids, grades preK through 5. I am there 3 days per week, but the health assistant is there 5 days per week. We see around 25-30 kids for episodic visits. We had 53 on Monday, which is our record! In addition, we have 12 daily...
