    Murphy's Law Experienced

Kinetic energy carried me forward into the saddlehorn, and I suffered an open book fracture of my pelvis. My horse, alarmed at falling behind the others, began to gallop again. I decided it was time to bail off, and tried to control my fall to the gr...

    Studer Group

Have now worked in 4 hospitals employing Studer principles. Here are several observations: 1. Must come from the top down, and the top must REALLY support the principles. Many at the top don't....just give it lip services. This DOES mean rounding and...

    Last name on namebadge

I think first name and credentials ( RN, LPN etc) are better. Agree that both names can be risky. I've worked in hospitals in 4 different states and no one does last names unless specifically requested.

    Healthcare Reform and nursing...question

looks like it's going to pass.... One thing we DIDN'T discuss here was that most of na individual's health care spend is in the final two years of life. If the worry about funding this is no longer an issue, many of us who have been frugal can now be...

How many years have you been a nurse?

41years as a nurse. Just retired 6 months ago. The decision to retire was for me really a physical one. I would ( and did) continue to practice until I really started to feel to tired to continue my 50+ hours a week as a nursing administrator.

    Death

This thread shows me you care about your patients. It's also notable that you feel this way after 8 years in long term care, where many staff get accustomed to death. Thank you for that! Unfortunately, we can't always predict when death will occ...

    Mandated scrub colors

What I like about it is that a nurse is once again recognized easily as a nurse without the cap. As far as purchasing uniforms, the choice between doing tihs and the lay-offs or job freezes some hospitals are experiencing is a no-brainer. This is not...

best book for a new nurse manager?

Budgeting for nurses managers ( Steven Finklestein). Effective nurse meader and manager ( Douglas) Nursing Administration Handbook (Rowland and Rowland) Also books by Tim Porter O'grady Hope this helps
  10. I've been in nurse manager positions in several agencies. common interviews have been director ( future boss), CNO ( sometimes), staff, peer managers, physician directors of the units. Facilities cna range up or down from there. The interviews set yo...

    Murphy's Law Experienced

Valid question, Kinsukiba.Got drugs and nitric oxide for the transport, so was definitely not thinking clearly. In an an awake and alert situation I would never have argued for it.
  12. STILL this this is a good dialogue, but I think the most telling thing that you said (360 joules) was that health care NEEDS REFORM. That is the epitome of the problem here. Many of the 'suits' you refer to are people trying to prevent unreasonable...
  13. Interesting thread. I spent a great deal of my later career in management and administrative roles, but prided myself on my visibility and presence on the floor. As a manager I held myself to the same standards as staff, BLS, ACLS, specialty certific...
  14. If you spent 41 years working full-time in every imaginable capacity to better patient care, you are part of the solution If you came in to work on countless holidays while others took the day off, you are part of the solution If you always put pati...
  15. I reply " that's why nursing is a fantastic career choice! It has so many different practice areas. " As a nursing educator, I taught the practice to others. As a nursing manager and administrator, I promoted quality care by ensuring that bedside sta...

    Managers getting fired

Agree with HouTx above. Being a manager has never been as challenging as it is today. As many in management say "no margin, no mission". In a climate of health care cutbacks, this is becoming increasingly difficult to do. Add to that balancing quality...
  17. So sorry about your harrowing experience ! A few things come to mind. This was a high risk hand-off, due to the vent AND the sedation. The need for clarity is essential because of that. Did the ED nurse need to call you to confirm you were ready prio...

    The good old days...

Sorry about your situation, but there IS hope. I am a newly retired baby boomer, and there are MANY more following me. Add to that the fact that us boomers are aging and developing illnesses related to that. This temporary job contraction will ease, ...

    Motivating Teamwork

Agree with the reply you got about leading by example. I would also question whether your perceptions of the lack of teamwork are jsut yours or are shared by others. I would suggest a survey to explore. Keep it short ( 10 questions or less). Use a li...

    Hostile work environment

There are legal definitions for what constitutes a hostile work environment. These include predominantly sexual harassment situations, and superior-subordinate relationships. What you're describing here is more like an unhealthy working environment. ...

    Calling All Nurse Managers/Clinical Directors

    Murphy's Law Experienced

Hi gnom , Think my semantics were wrong. When I talked about internal fixator I meant ORIF ( open reduction, internal fixation) and not a specific type of hardware. Because it was a "re-do' surgery, the doc did put in extra screws. Post-surgery, wne...

Are You Satisfied with Your Career Choice?

Agree with foreverlaur above. As a former nursing instructor, I had many students who had 'clear' career goals when they started, only to 'fall in love' with a practice area they had never considered. CRNA pay is good, but insurance premiums are hig...

    Frequency of Nursing Assessment

    Cardioversion Sedation goes Beyond Moderate-Help

First, I agree with the above statement on the nurse practice act. Know your state's sedation constraints. Some states really do not adress this well, and are vague, leaving you to seek other options. As for RN cardiac, if you are assisting in a cath...
