  1. write-up for insubordination because I turned my back to cry...

6 days of orientation as a new grad....hmmm...who was orienting you? Sounds like the manager that cried "insubordination" is on a power trip. Were they ex-military? C'mon, insubordination for crying is like using a jack hammer to tap in brads! ...
  2. What is it like becoming a male nurse?

My nursing school class had a ratio of 35f/5m. At no point in my training did I feel the "odd man out", because of my gender. As I choose to work in geriatrics, I have a few clients that prefer a female nurse for "care down there". Otherwise, the ...
  3. Will nursing grow on me?

I guess the question begs itself to be asked, what do you like about Nursing? With only 4 months to go, something has kept you in the saddle. Nursing grew on me. A friend suggested I would make a good nurse, when i was considering career pathways...

  5. keys for narcotics

Where I work, having the narcotic keys means that i have counted the narcotic box and am liable for them. If another nurse (yes my manager or the dns too) wants access to the keys, then they will count that box with me and take over the keys. if t...
  6. Only 5 units of insulin per injection site??

Consult your instructor. I have never heard of such a thing.
  7. How to Cope With Job-Related Anxiety

Another possible is to volunteer at a Nursing Home/Hospital. Would give you work place exposure, without the "job" demands, while also helping the community you would work with in the future.
  8. No, I am not going to do that

    ....where is it?? LOL
  9. Anyone heard of Saint Joseph's College of Maine?

I am a Mainer and St Joe's is a good school, with a good reputation (a bit pricey, but good). Would expect nothing less from their online studies. peace
  10. Think I will have to pass this up

My first job out of nursing school was 11-7 charge on a snf unit. Everyone was very helpful when i asked for help. I think LTC is a great place to work. Our general population is getting older, so geriatrics is a good place to be for job security....
  11. They sing a good song...got me for a couple hundred bucks. They put up a good front too. I have a very stylish award letter and folder, silvered lettering, the works, but where's the book? Some of life's lessons cost more than others, glad this on...
  12. Must read books for a Geriatric Nurse?

the notebook by nicholas sparks really opened my heart to dementia patients and their families
  13. What boundaries do you set?

hmmmm. Boundries? Mostly Live and Learn. I try to keep up on my breaks, but sh!t happens and I find myself at the end of the shift going hypoglycemic because I didnt eat my lunch. I try to do better the next day. I try not to let unhealthy patte...
  14. manual BP's?

i prefer manual over electronic any day. good idea to check with house policy. if you suspect errors in the floor stock equipment...make out a work slip and get the dang thing off the floor. make a stink and advocate for your patient. vital signs...

i love books and all things mystical. I want to create a mystically minded shop in the near future. (Did have part ownership in 2 used bookstores in the past...loved it) peace
  16. understaffed and dangers to license?

Keep working your way up the food chain until you get an answer....and start looking for another job...that's no way to be treated...your a professional nurse, not a pre-schooler.
  17. when did they stop wearing those cute nurses caps?

i think men entering the field to be more than just orderlies had something to do with it too. Altho, right now my LTC center has mandated that I wear bright pink top and grey pants for my uniform...hahahaha. Makes me chuckle everytime i wear it.
  18. My Favorite Pen Has Been Banned! Help!!!!

Uni has a new gel pen that is for "check cashing protection" and i love it. plus it comes in nice pastel colors. 3 for about $4 ... otherwise the Crystal Bic pens work good for me....10 for $1, I pass them out to my fellow nurses and they always h...

  20. pharmacology

what is your experience with pharm? most pharmacology books are laid out well and yes, its just knuckle under and read the 3000 page book. from that you will probably work out flash cards and study aids that help. in school i remember we each took...

sounds like you need some time off. relax...all of this will still be there when you get back.
  22. should I complaint?

1 nurse and 2 aides is pretty typical for 30 ltc residents...like the poster above me says...be thankful when you have more that 2 aides. the deeper hurt is a cut in the licenses on the floor. where i work, we had been running an rn/lpn mix for mos...
  23. i had med term in my ADN course work. You might want to look at the prospectus of the school program and see if they have shaved any other classes off to quicken up the program. Just as in the real world, we nurses are responsible to maintain our o...
  24. pet peeve cross over here...wrist BP cuffs...very inaccurate and generally not policy. Most facilities require equipment to go thru some testing and verification periodically. Why would I want to pay for a glucometer and strips out of pocket for a ...
