  1. Central IV Access and CT Dye

You can't use an infusaport with CT contrast. Figured this out the other day when they came to get our pt, then said "Oops, can't take him. Needs a PIV" :angryfire He has a port for a reason- he has...
  2. Maybe stationed at Ft Bragg...have questions

I live probably two hours from Ft. Bragg. Yes, NC hires ADN's. East Carolina University (http://www.ecu.edu) and UNC-Chapel Hill both have online BSN programs, so a local one shouldn't be a problem...
  3. PBDS casualty

I agree. During my orientation recently, they had us (new grads) as well as traveler's doing the PBDS. We found it very hard, and apparently our recruiters had failed to explain the importance of the...
  4. Weapons on Site

Thank you. I forgot that a psych unit at our hospital has a lock box, but officer's carry their weapons in the ED. Kinda concerns me.
  5. I forgot to mention the family quote of "My son/daughter/brother/third cousin removed is a doctor/nurse/mortician". And I care why? Like I'm going to wipe their butt with our freshest egyptian cotton...
  6. GRRR! I totally understand that one. How about "I haven't taken my dilantin in a few weeks. I can't afford it" (while wearing tons of gaudy gold jewelry and/or new $200 basketball sneakers) "They...
  7. Expecting RN- Would like suggestions

Hey. Not an OB nurse, but I am starting my second trimester. Luckily, I didn't get MS that bad. How far along are you? My doc was awesome, and went ahead and prescripted Zofran. The smells of the ER...
  8. Simple ultrasound question

Pelvic u/s can be done lady partslly. Not the most comfortable way, but to me, it's better. I'd rather have that in there, than resisting the urge to pee my pants.
  9. What do you wear to work when pregnant?

I've just been buying my pants in a larger size. As for shirts, when the time comes, I will probably be buyign a vest. I also love my pockets. Congrats from another 2006 mommie!
  10. New to the ER with questions re: Latex allergy

OUr ER is supposed to be totally latex free. I mean, if not, what do you do if that unknown trauma/code is allergic to latex and you're wearing latex gloves? As much as I miss my tight fitting latex...
  11. Yep- you learn the same skills whether you get your BSN or ADN. I have my ADN, and started out in the ED. Good
  12. I got a letter today telling me I am being considered for inclusion to the 05/06 Who's Who List Among Executive and Profession Women in Nursing. Is this something that comes out to all women nurses? I...
  13. More questions in my career change to be an RN.

I recently graduated (this is Andrea from IDOB, btw) in May. I got the job I wanted in a level-1 trauma center, and I love it. It is tough, b/c you're making a hard transition between "textbook...
  14. Who's Who Among Women in Nursing

Yeah, it seemed bogus. "hey, you just graduated nursing school, and have been working for three weeks! You've made it now!!!" :chuckle
  15. Failing to Document

Do you have a preceptor? If so, talk to them. Tell them you're worried, and you want them to read what you're putting, making sure you're not missing anything. I have mine read over my shoulder to...
  16. NCLEX Results in NC

How long does it take to get NCLEX results in NC? I took my NCLEX Friday, cut off at 75. I am beyond paranoid that I have failed this horrible excuse for a test. I'm incredibly hormonal, which added...
  17. Do our steths spread infection

I also clean my scope with alcohol and every now and then with Dispatch. I was curious how many microbes grow under rings, despite handwashing. BF cuffs, most of ours are disposable. IV poles get...
  18. Smoking bans in and around NC hospitals

I agree that smoking should be banned in and around hospitals, but I don't think they can limit who they hire according to whether they smoke or not- gotta be something legally wrong there. I'm a...
  19. what's in your pocket?

I'm a newbie, but here's what I carry so far: A few pens, b/c I always lose one or two. Penlight, calculator, sometimes a tourniquet, flushes go in cargo pockets. Tape goes on the scope.
  20. "to go" medicines?

We do not do it (I'm at a much bigger hospital though). I've had doctors who will give the patient the medicine and instruct them on home use, but we will not do it (nurses).
  21. Let's introduce ourselves...

Took boards May 19th, passed with 75 questions. I started my orientation June 13th, and have been working in the ED of a level-1 trauma center since then. I LOVE IT!
  22. What squicks you out?

I understand it might be natural to some (in the ER, I see some folks who don't wash, and it's gross), but regardless, it 'squicks' me out. Then again, I have the pregnancy "spidey sense' of smell....
  23. High School Health Occupations?

Thanks! At the HS I went to, there were two courses (it wasn't a general health course). You were able to get your CNA 1 thru the class. The first part was an anatomy/phys type of class, the second...
  24. Hey again! I'm still very interested in teaching, and another love I've always had was to teach as a high school health occupations teacher. The one I had in high school was amazing, and was one of...
  25. NCLEX Results???

No kidding! I had found out a few days before the NCLEX that I was pregnant. What an emotional roller coaster I was on! lol Congrats on passing!!!
