  1. you could apply to : yale, baystate medical center, umdnj at the very least. all require an rn and a bachelors degree. columbia is phasing out their accelerated program for individuals with an rn already (not the etp program). my thought: go through ...
  2. Experience to Enter CNM Program

i attend a highly ranked cnm program with an excellent pass rate. the class is composed of students with and without rn experience- and historically yes, they DO find jobs. i have experience as an rn and i agree with sebagolaurel.
  3. question for those who are nurse midwives (or anyone)

cnm's have their own license. states differ in their requirements re: collaborative physician. for LOTS of information, go right to the source: http://www.midwife.org - this is the website of the american college of nurse midwives good luck!
  4. RN Rates in Philadelphia area Poll

Bindy, I am not clear how answering your poll will empower us or save us from working as 'missionaries'. is this for you or are you working with a PAC on behalf of PA nurses?? thanks
  5. NCSBN learningext.com

i did not like it and found it was not like the nclex (not my exam anyway)
  6. My NCLEX experience...

let me assume that PA= Pennsylvania- start looking on Friday/Monday. the soonest they post is 2 business days after- but one of my friends didn't get her results for over a week. good luck!!
  7. Piercings

i have titanium screws in my knee and have had multiple mris since then without any problem
  8. From PA to RN

ahem. I know someone who went that route- moi. Specifically to become a CNM as there are only rare routes to catching babies as a PA. Went into a BSN/MSN program (to go back to school and spend that $ I wanted a degree, not just an RN although I was...
  9. Needle Stick :-(

it's not uncommon. you'll probably have to do the series again and then another titer 2 months after you finish the series. there is a small percentage (about 7-10%) who don't develop antibodies. if you go through a second series and don't develop ab...
  10. No Math???? Did I fail??

from what i understand, math ( ie medication calculations) are considered a lower level of difficulty. no math for me either- passed
  11. Birthing question

i have never heard of this. have been to LOTS of home births. please explain thanks :-)
  12. Center City Philadelphia NCLEX testing sites???

the site is in wayne, king of prussia area. the folks who work there are kind and compassionate. well worth the drive (of course there aren't many sites right in philly so... but the people make it worth the drive)
  13. Needlestick with HIV exposure

i posted on another thread about my experience with a needlestick (hiv, hep b and c) a few years ago. hang in there. everything you feel is normal and expected. glad you got 4 days off- all my results were negative by the way. the percentage of hcw...
  14. must you pass NCLEX first?

it's my understanding that working as a GN (graduate who has not passed nclex and is granted a temporary license as a graduate nurse) is dictated first by the state- in some states you cannot practice as a GN, regardless. in some states where working...
  15. this takes time but it worked very very well: make up a small booklet with the info that jcaho asks- inlcuding acronyms like RACE, PASS; where do our biohazards go; where is this and that manual?; hwat committees do we have- it's well worth it. every...
  16. NP or Nurse-midwife - sonography

in some schools, you are trained to do level 1 ultrasounds- as at upenn while you are in the program- this happens over the duration of a semester long course focusing on fetal evaluation
  17. Giving shots to AIDs patient tommorow in clinical

thanks for asking- no Hep B or Hep C either. i DID develop a deeper understanding of the impact antiretrovirals have on an individual though. :-)
  18. HUP, CHOP, Jeff, Christiana?

a gentle thought here- let's please watch how we use our words. i don't intend this as a flame. the previous poster referred to the hiring process at a philadelphia hospital as 'retarted' and i believe she meant 'retarded'; i feel certain she wasn't ...
  19. Giving shots to AIDs patient tommorow in clinical

I worked in an HIV clinic for 7 years- and the worst DID happen- I was stuck by a needle from a pt with a cd4 of 48, a viral load of >750,000 who was coinfected with both Hep B and Hep C. And guess what??? I took meds for a month (yuck) and... I ...
  20. Has anyone taken the Kaplan review course?????

online review kaplan- well worth it-- especially the breakdown of questions and how to 'decode' them; great questions on disk and online used saunders a little, book and disk also used ncsbn review but didn't find the review material to be more than ...
  21. BSN to Med School??

i would suggest contacting MCAS and getting their book of medical schools- it lists all their prereqs. Requirements of medical schools vary.
  22. for direct entry, upenn or yale?

personally, i'd rather live in philadelphia than new haven. i grew up in new england and lived in california for 14 years if you go straight through (full time) the fnp program at penn, including doing 'double' clinicals during your last semester of ...
  23. Accepted at Penn!

congratulations!!! i am in the cnm/whnp program at penn-i begin in may as well (i just finished my bsn there). tough choice- pm me if you have any questions re: penn. i am VERY excited about the program- the faculty are fabulous. there are still ho...
  24. New grad RN--PA school? Advice pretty please :)

so.... i graduated from a master's PA program in 97- with LOTS of prior healthcare experience. i have just finished my bsn and will start my msn (cnm and whnp) in may (yes, i was able to get some course work waived). i couldn't be a midwife as a pa s...
  25. midwifery interview coming up

wear clothes you feel comfortable in, but do look "professional"- my interviewer wore birks as well. i'd add that boning up on a midwifery issue or 2 is always helpful. has your school done any interesting research? developed protocols or excelled in...
