Broward College May 2010 Acceptance
I too was at the meeting last week. I thought they would at least have punch and cookies, LOL. and find it hard to believe that it will take 100 hours to earn a C. If we can read fast, take smart notes, and know how to manage time, we should be able to handle it in less than 100 hours per week. But who knows... As for me, I had to defer to fall. I got in a car accident a few weeks ago and it left me injured. I would not be able to pass physical honestly because I now have low back, neck, right shoulder and right knee issues. I can't lift jack squat and need MRI and therapy. I really hope this does not affect my entire career plans. I have been wanting to do this for a long time, and it took a lot of hard work just to get into the program. VERY bummed.......

I thought I heard that you can only take the online program in the Fall ... they don't offer it in May. I could be wrong, though.

Ostlouis -- it absolutely sounds like it was Micro, then. Future applicants reading this thread-- be forwarned! Do you now have to take the HESI in order to apply for August? If so, I took it for FAU and it was really easy. You should nail it. And it was not expensive. I reviewed for about 10 days or so, on and off.

Here is what the site says: "In the event of a tie, students will be given one (1) point for the completion of each college-level, general education course that is required toward the Associate in Science Degree for the Nursing Program. In the event that a tie remains, the point will be awarded to the student with the highest grades in the required courses. General Education courses completed prior to admission may be used to assign points in the event there is a tie for a seat. Humanities course with writing credit (see catalog for listing) Social and Behavioral Science course (see catalog for listing) MCB2013 & Lab (Microbiology and Lab" I do have a BA, so I have fulfilled the maximum number of college level-gen ed courses. I also have a 4.0 in non-science. I got an A in Micro. Maybe that might help to answer questions. I still don't like to see the differences between last year's applicant pool points vs. this year's situation, and how that totally messed with a bunch of folks' lives. With 12 points you would have gotten in for that past January start for sure.

I was thinking the same thing. Why me and not you? I wonder if they go off of "tie breaker" flow chart thingy on the nursing web page. Maybe it was the Micro grade or something. Do you think they consider race/age/gender in any way to round things out? I can't imagine that they do. So sorry you didn't get in.

I got in as an alternate with twelve points. I wonder if all 90 people ahead of me will keep their spots.....if not I may be fine. I can't believe 12 points wasn't enough to get it. Last semester, people with EIGHT points were alternates. Did the guy you know with twelve points make alternate? You know, when I was handing in my application in person, the lady put it in the system in person and had me sit with her. She was saying stuff like, "Oh, you'll get in! These grades are just fine! Go home and tell your kids that "Momma did well!" I guess she didn't know what the pool was going to be like this time around. I also didn't know that it was for North Campus only. I applied for Central.

IMO -- he should NEVER lie, especially about something to do with a future career. Not good advice. You gotta stay on the high road, no matter how much you want something.

Just turned my application in in person at Central Campus. The lady behind the little desk was VERY nice. Wonderful, in fact. She took the time to input my application while I waited. She tallied my points while I was there, too, and made sure my chemistry, which was taken at another university, was inputted correctly. My point total was 12. I'm feeling pretty good right about now. I don't have a fear of central campus faculty. I am pretty sure I can handle all types of personalities. I just plan on keeping my mouth shut and getting my work done, and learning as much as I can without being a suck-up. Let's hope my plan works.

FAU Accelerated BSN 2010 - questions
Well, I got a welcome packet saying that I was admitted into the university, so far. I also got an email yesterday asking for proof of Florida residency. That's it. I have two prereqs to still do, which will be done by May 1, but I don't need to take them if I am not going to get into the program. I wish I knew, so I could know whether or not I need to sign up for the two classes.

Thank you Sunray, for all of the information you took the time to post -- in various threads, not just this one. Very helpful.

choosing a campus and picking nursing classes at broward college
I only see Test Success: Test-Taking Techniques for Beginning Nursing Students, by Nugent. Is this the book you mean? Thanks.

Can someone set me strait on what to expect for FAU nursing please?
Here is one: http://www.broward.edu/hospitalsponsorships/ I have heard ( chit-chat and grapevine) that they are only offering 4 or 5 TOTAL scholarships among all of the hospitals in Broward. Which I guess would be 1 each or so. I heard there used to be a lot more.

I Am Feeling Like the Biggest Loser...
Michigan. Say no more. It's not you. Don't beat yourself up. I sometimes struggle with some mixed emotions about staying home with my kids -- when my class wrote resumes for a project, I had a LOOOOOOONG gap of time where I didn't have much to put down for employment, since, aside from freelance writing done from home, I have been home with my kids for 16 years. So I was honest. I wrote down what I did as a mother that might be helpful to a nursing career -- a few things were -- knowledge of velopharyngeal insufficiency r/t cleft palate, feeding issues with craniofacial anomolies, multiple surgeries for my son, biomedical interventions for autism, etc.... I also listed volunteer work (educational surrogate parent for foster kids --often dealt with meds mgt. on these totally overmedicated foster kids) When I looked at the list, I felt pretty good. When you stayed home as a mother to your kids, I am sure you did a lot more than simply watching Oprah, clipping coupons, and folding laundry. :heartbeat

I am the tall woman who was making cracks about just having had my boobs done. (I didn't of course....it was just my fake reason to be in a hospital bed.)

Oh, by the way, besides the Potter and Perry text, I bought a used (and unmarked!)study guide for a dollar, which seems helpful, and a math calculations book, just for fun, called "Calculate with Confidence." It got good Amazon reviews, so I picked up a 4th edition( with CD) for about 2 bucks, as well.

Well, I think I have 12 or 13 points, but it is only based on my calculations, so I could be wrong. I just want this so much that I worry about not having the chance to do it. I bought some books and am studying ahead, which would make it seem like I am confident about getting in, but strangely, I am not assuming anything, and won't be surprised if I don't get in for some reason.

I just bought the sixth edition of Potter and Perry to just read on my own until my program starts in may. See me assuming that I will get in? It's older but I only paid two dollars for it. Not expecting to be able to use it for class. I guess it won't hurt to compare editions.

I didn't get a hold of anyone today, no surprises there, but tonight in Core class, I did ask my instructor if she had heard anything about not having a May start at Central Campus, and she said she hasn't heard a thing.

Well, I agree with you. I don't want to defer at all. It's time and money wasted, unless we use the time to make money and bank it for when we start school, I guess. I really just want to get started. I took the HESI for FAU. I applied there, but I really don't think I will get in, even though I scored well on the test (94%). I heard they have 600 applicants for 60 slots, or something like that. The HESI was a very easy test, so don't worry about that. It's about 65 bucks or so, plus a $15 study book.

Sunraygurl -- deferring is a good idea, if we have to. I didn't think of that, because I was so intent on starting in May. I can't do North campus -- my kids all go to school in Davie and Hollywood and we live right by Central, so Central is first choice, South is second. North would be very difficult logistically for my family. I will be calling the school today to see if they have made a decision, but it is actually difficult to communicate with people there -- they don't seem to return emails, and they don't return voice mail messages either. I suppose making a trip down there isn't out of the question, as I do have another question I have been trying to get answered -- with no replies from the college. By the way, does anyone know if there is a thread or web page somewhere that lists what hospitals the three campuses use for their clinicals? I saw one once a while back, but can't seem to find it now.

Broward College January 2010 Acceptances
I am not clear. Can you take pharmacology before getting into the program? I just looked online and there are a few spots open. I am applying for the May program, and it would make sense to lighten the load by taking pharm in January, before the program starts in May. Also, anyone taken it online? It might seem like a good one to take online, since it is a lot of rote memorization. I am thinking about it. Don't remember if I mentioned it, but I am applying to Central, too. Anyone heard that they might not have May program at Central?
