  1. Who starts IV's at night at your workplace?

Either our charge nurse does, then the floating preceptor, and if all else fails, someone from PICU will come over and put one in - if we know in advance it's a hard stick, we just call the PICU from the get-go...(I work in a pediatric hospital... :)...
  2. Dressing up on Halloween... unprofessional?

I work at a pediatric hospital...it's pretty much required to dress up, hehe... We had a fairy theme this year on our floor...so we were all wearing wings and lots of glitter butterfly tattoos, hehe...the kids thought it was hilarious... :)
  3. What are some of your benefits and how good are they?

$50/biweekly for a PPO medical/dental/vision/life plan... 401k match... 20% shift diff for working nights, ~30% for weekend nights... ...along with other random benefits that would be too long to list... Definitely love my job (and employer, haha!)
  4. I graduated in May 2008, first nursing job started in January 2009 was pediatric psych in a private hospital for a year and a half, and then switched to working med-surg at one of the top pediatric hospitals in the country...had almost no orientation...
  5. Four 10's or Five 8's? Which would you do?

4 10s, without a doubt in my mind, haha!! :)
  6. Asked to job shadow on the day of interview

My job interview was like this - interview before, shadow after - and I was offered the job within 18 hours, hehe... Good luck! :)
  7. scared i'm going to lose my license..

Congratulations!!! I just got out of a similar situation like that - scarily similar, actually - I have 4 days left at that job, and then on to working at one of the best children's hospitals in the country, yay!! Good luck to you!! :)
  8. Should I go ahead and get "RN" engraved after my name when

Lol, hilarious thread... I wrote "RN" everywhere for inspiration the second I graduated, down to the index card I kept under my pillow... ...in pencil, hehe... I think that makes me superstious...
  9. Depressed nurse here, lexapro is not helping.

I feel you - I had my own issues during and after nursing school, and used meds and therapy to get through it... Personally, the only way I could do nights is if it's in 12-hr shifts - I couldn't do it if it were in 8's...it messes me up too much... ...
  10. The 1st check as an rn....yay!!! Or nay!!

Nice thread... I just switched from part-time days to full-time nights, and that's a big difference, haha!! I have two goals - to knock out my 2 credit cards, and start saving up for my dream computer - an Apple MacBook Pro - might be a few paychecks...
  11. Can you get good experience at a part-time job?

I worked part-time for my first job, and I loved it - I actually ended up doing pretty much an alternating schedule - one week, I would do 3 days, and the next week, I'd do two days - so, actually, it ended up pretty well! Good luck!
  12. Frustrated by job search.

  13. Okay to email a potential boss?

I emailed my resume to my NM at 8pm at night...I had an interview scheduled 37 minutes later... ...And I had an offer for my dream job (at the dream hospital!) 17 hours after the interview ended. The worst she could tell you is no. I'd do it, haha!!!...
  14. where to go? Emory or a community college

I agree with the others for all the reasons mentioned (and I WENT to Emory) - if for no other reason than this: Do you want to be stuck with that huge price tag and not have a job afterwards to pay it off (assuming you'd be taking loans out) - becaus...
  15. Question regarding Humalog insulin

Think about it this way - generally speaking, when using a sliding scale, whatever amount of insulin you give is going to account for the blood sugar and the meal. So if you only have one of those factors (i.e. high blood sugar, but pt didn't eat), t...
  16. Question regarding Humalog insulin

She wanted it given after d/t the poor appetite/depression. I work at a pediatric psych hospital, and we give the insulin after...if you give it before per guidelines, the patient might not eat anything, simply because they're not hungry, or because...
  17. A totally different career path please

Have you tried psych? You can still use your nursing degree, and psych isn't exactly "bedside" per se... Good luck whatever you choose, I'm going through the same thing myself trying to figure out exactly where I fit in this whole scheme of nursing.....
  18. I'm so embarassed but I know I shouldn't be...

Don't be embarrassed, lord knows the only way I made it across the stage at graduation was to get on medication, and therapy goes a long way, I seldom use the meds anymore...good luck!
  19. Is insulin good after 28 days?

Personally, I actually keep pens in my purse in case I have an issue with my insulin pump, and I use them until they are empty - which generally takes more than 28 days because I seldom use it - but they've gotten me out of a pinch every time - I use...
  20. Are you forced to get Immunizations?

Hmm...they couldn't make you, I mean, suppose you're allergic to them...(i.e. flu shot = eggs)? I have nothing against vaccines, but since every time I get one (flu or otherwise), I end up running a 101-102 fever...people tend to understand why I say...
  21. Nurses and vaccines

Luckily, I got all of my main vaccines when I was little...for some odd reason, the older I've gotten, the worse I react to them - flu vaccines, always feel awful and run around 99-100 degree fever, final straw was when I got a DtaP booster, perfectl...
  22. Knowing when to medicate/give a prn

LovenandjRN-- I would have picked the Ativan over the Haldol (in this case) because of the sedating effect of the Ativan - I'm not one for "drugging" the patients, but if I were in that situation where it was just myself and 2 techs on the night shif...
  23. Knowing when to medicate/give a prn

Personally, I would have given the Ativan...reasoning being that as someone said, I like to nip things in the bud as well, and also, because of the fact that there was only you and 2 techs present, I would have been concerned about the safety issue i...
  24. You know your shift is going to be INSANELY busy when...

lol, that's hilarious...i feel your pain, i work psych, too and have had that happen to me, and that's never a good sign... :)
  25. RN turns barista...

Now, there's a brilliant idea right there...and who knows, start with that, and you might just meet a nurse who has that link to your first RN job... Honestly, I'd love to have a little side job like that - extra money, that is relaxing and has nothi...
