    Full Practice Authority of Nursing

The original posting postulated will more doctorates in nursing contribute to full practice authority for nursing. It didn’t ask will requiring a doctorate be needed for entry to advance practice. Doctorates are already terminal degrees in nursing. Y...

What sort of job/job title do you hold?

    Won’t be the last.

    Full Practice Authority of Nursing

Well I appreciate your perspective as an RN. As an NP, I have different view point. It’s good that nursing is big enough for differing opinions. As they say, to each their own.

    Full Practice Authority of Nursing

Why do you think hospitals, especially Magnet, prefer BSN? Education. Yeah they qualify for the same tests, but BSN is more time and more comprehensive. More time in school is more opportunity for growth. Same concept for continuing education. I’m su...

    Full Practice Authority of Nursing

Good point. Terminal degrees will be more costly compared to masters degree. I think more training and education for nurses will pay for itself in the long run. Just like comparing the BSN to the ADN. Think of it as value added.

What sort of job/job title do you hold?

That’s concerning. I would think NP is a protected title.

Why don't CRNAs have prescriptive authority like NPs?

Okay. So it sounds like CRNAs can obtain prescriptive authority, many just don’t want it. Hmm.

Forced to Drop Due to Clinical Placement

I wouldn’t change my path to PA if I had a choice. Nurses bring so much knowledge and experience to advance practice that PAs dream to emulate. The try to copy nursing’s full practice authority with “optimal team practice.” Nursing’s streng...

    Full Practice Authority of Nursing

Tell that to medicine, osteopathy, podiatry, dentistry, psychology, etc. It’s not just parity, nursing knowledge is so expansive that the degrees nurses hold should reflect it. If nurses are the experts in nursing practice, they should have doctoral ...

Why don't CRNAs have prescriptive authority like NPs?

I would hope it would be included in their education as analgesia is within their scope of practice. My point is, CRNAs are autonomous practitioners. The ability to order and prescribe as opposed to working under a protocol is paramount to full pract...

Why don't CRNAs have prescriptive authority like NPs?

Not necessarily. Could be orders from the surgeon or anesthesiologist. If an anesthesiologist can prescribe, why can't CRNA? If full practice authority is the direction, I think this APRN role needs prescriptive authority.

Why don't CRNAs have prescriptive authority like NPs?

Looks like you answered your question.

    More bedside needed to apply?

I agree. I sure hope as healthcare evolves, so will the clinical competencies of DNP programs. Nursing practice just covers so many levels and facets of healthcare that’s standardization of the terminal degree is difficult. There’s 4 types of APRN ro...

    The state of APRN education

I think this is specific to NP programs. Right now the requirement is 500. Increasing is to 1000 would improve the quality of NP education. Schools need to be accountable to find preceptors for their students. I think this will help weed out the degr...

    More bedside needed to apply?

I wouldn’t describe DNP as nonclinical. It is a practice doctorate as opposed to a research doctorate. Some DNP programs are still clinical focus, depends which one you decide to do. I think the more doctorates in our precession, the better.

    The state of APRN education

Standards for Quality Nurse Practitioner Education, 6th Edition The National Task Force on Quality NP Education is working on a draft proposal. It includes requiring 1000 clinical hours for NP programs. I think it’s a good step forward if these ...

    CRNA Job Alternatives?

Something to consider is pain management.

    More bedside needed to apply?

I don’t think it will help. I would check the individual program requirements. I think what will help you stand out is if you are certified in your specialty. They take any background of nursing.

Duke vs. Johns Hopkins DNP--Family Practice

I live in the West Coast so this is my perspective. Although it doesn’t really matter, I feel like Johns Hopkins is a more recognizable institution. There are more factors involved of course but that’s all up to you. Keep advancing the profession!

    Feeling Lost As An NP

I am a trained family nurse practitioner practicing in palliative care. I love my role being part of a multidisciplinary team inpatient. Currently back to school for psychiatry. Yes, primary care is so stressful but there are more opportunities out t...
  22. Don’t worry about saturation, if there are people, there will be health issues and nursing will always be in demand. Just follow your passion. I love being an FNP, I have learned not only to take care of patients, but myself and loved ones.

Whatever happened to the Diplomate of Comprehensive Care?

I think that it was an interesting direction for nursing practice, which the profession was not ready to take. I think there is space in the future for this, just not now. As Nursing science advances, thus may be something to consider again in the fu...

Do pH nurses change their title to doctors?

I believe advanced practice registered nurses (APRN) who have terminal degrees in Nursing (DNP, DNAP, PhD) should have their education and training be regarded by referring to them Dr. (insert surname). As nursing practice advances with full practic...
