  1. What grosses YOU out?

Reading these posts while eating yogurt is not a great idea. As a wound specialist, not much bothers me. But there are times when horrible toe nails and gunk in the beard will do me in!!!
  2. Why do we do this?

I had a patient that had, in 2 inch letters, DNR tattoed on his upper left chest. He was in his fifties. There were no DNR orders anywhere, and I asked the pt if that was really what he wanted, and he did want to be DNR. I informed the dooctors, a...
  3. Advice needed for coworker problems!!!

    RUN AND GET OUT!!!
  4. Looking for the PERFECT ink pen ;)

OMG, and I thought I was the only person obsessed with pens!! I like the Zebra-301 also, one of my favorites. But after reading these post, I think that a trip to Staples is in order to try something different!!
  5. Favorite bumper stickers

My favorite - Glory be the day when hospitals get the money they need and the airforce has to hold a bake sale to buy a bomber.
  6. Nurse: 'I was fired for refusing flu shot'

Not going to continue with this - I do wish you well and hope you have a great day.
  7. Nurse: 'I was fired for refusing flu shot'

"You can tell your health information to anyone you like" and what if I do not want to tell anyone my health information. Sorry that I wrote hippa and not HIPPA
  8. Nurse: 'I was fired for refusing flu shot'

Sounds like the Scarlet letter to me. And what about Hippa? Are you not telling people your medical information by the stickers on your badge and the mask you wear??
  9. How do you de-stress?

I love nothing more than a good laugh - guess that is why Funniest Home videos is one of my favorit shows. Need the laughs doing the job we do. I also enjoy knitting (anyone need socks??!!) and wine sure does help!! Then again, BV and ginger also ...
  10. How do you de-stress?

    You said it!!
  11. 5 days with days/evening switch is nuts!

Schedules, shift roatations, and staffing - nothing has changed in the 31 years that I have been a nurse. Why expect it to change now??
  12. Who else loves their job

I am a wound/ostomy specialist and I do love what I do. I consult on patients and try to help them. I am on my own, doing my thing at work. I LOVE not getting too tied up in the Mickey mouse happy crap that goes on on the nursing units.
  13. Told "No WAY I could claim overtime tonight"

Our facility did the same thing with overtime, we were told there would be no overtime paid for the 1st half hour. Someone got smart and contacted lawyers, and the facility was found guilty. Facility had to go back a # of years and pay out the over...
  14. Help me with self scheduling ideas!

I would suggest to be more flexible and keep an open mind. You may not get what you want all of the time, and should not expect this. I would bet my bottom dollar that not all of the staff on your unit will get what they want. Like I say, life is ...
  15. Wet-to-dry dressing question

As a wound specialist, wet to dry dressings should be a thing of the past. WTD was used to debride, and in the true sense of the dressing, should be left on until dry and then pulled of (while dry) to debride. The problem with this is that it will ...
  16. Using a Vac for undermining

Are the nurses cutting the hole in the drape, where the trac pad is, large enough? Need to be about 25 cent size. Have had lots of MD's cut just a slit and then the machine goes crazy. Agree that there are different oppinions on packing areas of u...
  17. My best orientation mistakes

Ruby vee - that is too funny. Loved it!!
  18. What does your username mean?

am a wound and ostomy specialist, hence wound warrier!!
  19. Just liked it and wanted to share

Your post sure made me think of my Dad - he was in WWII and was in the waters of Normandy on D-Day. Never spoke about this, but sure wish he would have. After he dies, my uncle told me that the only thing my dad told him about this time, was how re...
  20. Nursing the old fashioned way

Cantor tubes, glass thermometers with the plastic covers, maalox and sugar for bedsores, cascara and MOM for constipation, EKG machines with the red suction bulb, incentive spirometers that were 2 glass bottles with green liquid that patients blew fr...
  21. Steps of a wet to dry dressing

I agree with margo533, wet to dry dressings are not the thing to do - but try and tell the MD's, vascular docs and plastics docs about it. Difficult to believe that in this day and age the wet to dry dressings are still being used.
  22. What Is Your Most Gross, Yucky, Disgusting Nursing Horror Story?

To add to what Optomist wrote, this incident happened soon after I graduated. Had a patient with dry gangrene of her foot and ankle, that the family finally consented for surgery. Night before surgery, family outside of room, I turned the patient a...
  23. the dreaded holidays..... & do you work 'em by choice?

Ah, the child of divorced parents always plays the middle role quite well - I have been in that situatuin all of my life!!! Work is the perfect excuse - and do not think twice about it!!!
  24. Black heals, debride or dry dressing?

Best practice stated that if heel eschar is black and dry, just leave the areas alone. Keep the heel off of the bed is of utmost importance. If the eschar starts to separate and/or drain, then you are almost obligated to use santyl. Good luck!!
  25. Just like Pig-Pen from Charlie Brown

Place bucket og charcoal in the room - under the bed. Will absorb the odor
