  1. Is there a way to get to the blue side of allnurses using the app? I have some off topic stuff I want to post but I can't seem to find my way there while using the app.
  2. I was one of those red gummi bears in nursing school. I wore bright red scrubs. I don't wear red anymore, it haunts me.
  3. How long is your commute?

5 minutes....I love it. I have previously commuted 45-90 minutes one way for other jobs in the past. I do miss the decompression time I had with longer commutes.
  4. Thank you for the suggestions and the good luck wishes. I am trying not to dread going to work on Monday and hoping the weekend off will replenish my supply of patience.
  5. In high school I was once unprepared and did not have tampons so I went to the nurse. All she had were these gigantic pads and I asked if she had tampons. I got a 20 minute lecture on why girls should not wear tampons because virginity and how I woul...
  6. When you just don't want to go to work....

College education for the kids, retirement, bill payment - these things get my butt to work each time. I am a widow and I feel the pressure of being the sole provider for my family of 3 intensely.
  7. Happy Birthday to ixchel and anyone else celebrating this week.. I learned that I am getting another raise this year which means that in total my pay will have gone up $3 since January. I'm very pleased and I know I work hard, but the motivation for ...
  8. New Grad 5 days orientation

If you asked for more time for orientation, would you get it? My facility gives 3 weeks of orientation, usually 1 week on day shift and then 2 weeks on the specific shift one is hired for. 5 days is not long enough but seems to be the standard for mo...
  9. I am one of those folks who woke up to news the other day that our cell phone carrier data had been hacked. To say this offer was timely would be a huge understatement. I applied on Friday 10/2 and got a confirmation email that same day a few hours l...
  10. Would You Report Me for This?

I work in LTC. I do not ever leave medication with a resident or ask CNAs to make sure the resident takes the medication. I wait for the resident to take the medication and I also make sure they actually swallow the medication before I walk away. If ...
  11. What do you say to family when a patient has died?

Whatever you say, please make sure it does not include phrases such as "your loved one is in a better place" or "did your loved one personally know Jesus as their personal savior?"
  12. What should I do about final grade

I think it would be a mistake to take this to the Dean at this point. She has offered to show you the non-curved grades so do that at the very least before you involve the Dean. If after all that the teacher still gives you a B+ then you will have to...
  13. LPN being scheduled to work as CNA....

Personally, I would not want to be scheduled as a CNA that often even though I was being paid the LPN wage. I would go elsewhere. I guess you have to decide if you are going to continue to put up with it especially if they are indeed hiring new nurse...
  14. This week, I have learned... (8/8)

What I have learned from working with quite a few dementia/Alzheimer's residents in LTC is that an interruption in their routine can be extremely traumatic. In the case of hospitalization, they are of course not well so that is a stressor and they ar...
  15. This week, I learned.... (7/25)

I learned that I really really really need a nice long break from work. I learned that I am very lucky to work for a great DON/ADON team. LTC nursing is hard but they go above and beyond for the nurses and they have our backs. I have friends working ...
  16. New Grad drowning in LTC

I have heard of verbal orders not being allowed in some acute care situations. In my LTC facility where most of the contact with MDs is via telephone, that is not at all realistic.
  17. New Grad drowning in LTC

Ask whoever is making noise around you to quiet down when you are on the phone. Just today I had to make that request to some staff members who were oooing and ahhing over baby pictures while I was on the phone. Make sure the volume on your phone is ...
  18. Nurses, how do you view your job?

It is a job and it is most certainly not a calling. Do I lose points for that?
  19. What I learned this week (6/27)...

I learned that I am considered Ms. cool, calm, and collected in emergencies so when I had a mini melt down at work, I scared the crap out of some people. In my defense, in a 2 hour window, I had an admission, 2 falls, and a run in with a not so nice ...
  20. Ati exit exam

Do you have access to the ATI practice questions? Do you do those questions and then read through ALL the rationales even for questions you got right? Are you able to sign up for Virtual ATI? My PN school required those who did not pass the ATI exit ...
  21. Question about NCLEX posts

True but in all my years of being on AN this has always been the case. There are a gazillion posts stating the number of SATA etc does not mean anything and a gazillion more stating they do. Around and around it goes. Oh well.
  22. Question about NCLEX posts

I kept track of the SATA/pharm/OB etc questions using tally marks on the board provided. It did not interfere with my ability to pass the test. As long as one understands that the number of SATA/other topic questions has no bearing on pass or fail wh...
  23. Why so many 3-11 jobs at nursing homes?

Admissions and sundowning are my two top reasons for hating that shift.
  24. You will all probably hate me for this

Not really. There is no universal way to perceive what is rude or not rude on AN or anyplace else for that matter. Age has nothing to do with it.
  25. You will all probably hate me for this

This is the heart of the matter right there. Well said.
