  1. Job abandonment

Posts like these are why I sometimes I think I work in the Utopia of LTC. My DON/ADON routinely work the carts on any shift if they are unable to find coverage for call outs.
  2. No rehab kitchen here unfortunately. In addition, I did suggest that they take grandma out for breakfast or bring back breakfast to the facility and eat with her in resident lounge. That was a no go. IMO, even if we had a rehab kitchen, I do not see...
  3. HO-HO'd out!

I hate working the shift right after the residents have their holiday party. The party is fun but it interrupts their usual daily routine and many just don't handle that well.
  4. Shoes?

I am in love with Alegria shoes, in particular the Kayla clog. It is the only style of Alegria I have tried so far and I couldn't be happier. No longer are my knees and back killing me after a shift and the shoes are cute too.
  5. "I brought eggs, cheese, onions, tomatoes and bacon. Open up the kitchen for us so grandma can make us her famous omelettes." This was said to me by a resident's grandson who brought his wife and kids down so grandma could make them breakfast. Keep i...
  6. Being Asked By DON to Resubmit Incident Reports

This used to happen all of the time in our facility - love the DON but she would lose her head if it wasn't attached to her body. Thankfully almost all documentation, including incident reports, is now electronic. So much better.
  7. No EAP here at this smallish family owned facility. However I do have access to a wonderful counselor who still sees my girls but I think its time to make an appointment for myself. It has been almost 2 years since i have been there.
  8. Congrats LibraSunCNM. One of my nursing clinical instructors conceived via IVF and delivered a healthy baby boy earlier this month. I wish you a healthy pregnancy.
  9. I learned that some facility MDs think I rock as a nurse. One of them wrote a fabulous email to the DON which she shared with with me. The other one said it to me on the phone after he returned my call to clarify a resident's medications. My crappy ...
  10. To old for nursing school?

    27/28 is old?
  11. We were all wrong about nursing home nurses

    Exactly.
  12. We were all wrong about nursing home nurses

I have seen on more than one occasion here the implication that LTC nurses (one post specifically called out LTC LPNs) do not use critical thinking. Seriously? I have also had a couple of ER nurses make snide remarks about LTC nurses when I call to g...
  13. Head Lice - It's True

Bedazzled parts, cooter jewelry, "public" lice... I am not a school nurse but I hope you won't mind if I hang out here more because you are fun and cool.
  14. I learned today that some nurses at my facility don't take the narcotic count seriously. I have had the last 2 days off, came in for day shift to find that an entire bingo card of norco is missing and has apparently been missing for more than 24 hour...
  15. Does your facility have 12 hour shifts or 8 hour shifts?

My facility is all 8 hour shifts. I sometimes long for the many days off I would have with 12s but working 6-2 works best for my family. I am able to get off work in time to ferry 2 busy kids to sports and other activities and go to games without hav...
  16. Perhaps that is the case in your part of the country. I can tell you that at the LTC facility where I work, many RNs stay for 6-12 months and almost always move on to work for the large hospital network in the area.
  17. I don't like pediatric patients, am I normal?

I witnessed my first childbirth pre-nursing school. It was the birth of my niece 6 months after I had given birth to my own child. I remember thinking, "so that's what it looks like from the other end!" and being a bit grossed out. No tears there. I ...
  18. I learned that being the only nurse out of 4 with more than 2 months nursing experience on a 2-10 shift is not an experience I want to relive anytime soon. The admissions and sun-downing I was expecting, but the multiple questions from the newbie nur...
  19. I am thankful that I have a job I like most of the time. I am really thankful that said job is less than 2 miles from my house. I really appreciated that distance while driving to work in the recent snow storm that dumped over 1 ft of snow. I am than...
  20. problem with my DON, help!

However your one problem is a big one IMO. You will have to decide if loving the patients, proximity to home and pay are worth the stress, aggravation and risks of dealing with this manager who has the power to ruin your career.
  21. I saw another nurse assault a patient

    Report it.
  22. I learned that 4 days off in a row equals bliss. I work 4-5 8s a week so 4 consecutive days off is a rare occurrence. I learned that I need to try harder to fly under the radar at clinical with one particular instructor who seems to have a problem w...
  23. I didn't learn this but wanted to mention it so I could have an excuse for using Halloween emoticons :Evil-Pumpkin: - seeing little kids all costumed up visiting their family members at my facility today put a smile on my face. So adorable :Ghost:. ...
  24. Teaching hygiene to (stinky) 5th grade girls

I'd include something on stinky feet/socks/shoes as well. My 6th grader can clear the room if she doesn't change socks daily and spray her shoes with shoe spray. Her feet sweat so much.
