  1. Do you ever feel like you're a licensed narcotics pusher/IV starter for seekers?
  2. I would say evenings. 11a-11p or 3-11p if u're not a morning person. I've done nights for 2.5 years and it really has affected my mood, energy level, sleep pattern and even social life! I am tired all the time during the day and it took me about 1.5 ...
  3. Is this right for an ER position in Torrance, CA

Thanks for the input. I did not take this position.
  4. They're offering $15/hr (blended rate! ) and $20/hr including the stipend..... Free private housing, but will reduce hourly rate for a rental car.... Does this sound right? I really like the location, but $15/hr is such an abysmal number....
  5. Looking for younger travel partners ages 20-30, ER

    I am down! :)
  6. Get through it without laughing - dare ya

I think you need to be an ER nurse to find humor in this clip. :) Maybe we do need to slow down, make eye contact and let the patient know that we care about ingrown hair at 4am while the guy next to him is coding.
  7. still too slow and lost!!!!!

Hey, first of all, congratulations on landing a job in the ER as a new grad. :) You should be proud of yourself. *pat on the back* I started as a new grad in the ER myself and know exactly what you're going through. I know the school (or any tech/EMS...
  8. New Nurse having trouble with Techs

I'm having the same trouble where I work, but I made a mistake of handling things myself (i.e: confronted the tech myself) and now I have a "bad reputation" amongst the techs. Looking back, I took it too personally and was too prude & naive in t...
  9. I started working @ ER as a new grad this February and I am doing pretty well with everything EXCEPT starting a line!!! I know I am supposed to take my time, but I also need to draw labs before attaching the saline lock, so I need to do it pretty fa...
  10. It's been 2 months since I started working in the ER and I lost about 15lb!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes they are unintentional losses. I don't know if I should be happy about it or not. haha My coworkers told me they've all lost about 20~40lb their first year. ...
  11. A guy got stuck by a fish bone while removing a dead fish from the tank. couldn't even tell where this "puncture wound" was. Sent him home with a bandaid and tetnus shot. haha
  12. Non emergent ER visits

I agree with CathyLew. It is ok to come to ER for non-emergencies, but don't complain when you have to wait hours to be seen because we prioritize ABCs first. I see more and more people coming to the ER as a clinic which is ok depending on their comp...
  13. Starting PIV = bane of my existance. Any advice?

Thanks for all the helpful advices! I only use AC for people going for CT w/ contrast, people who need blood/ffp asap or just as a last resort. There definitely is a good day and a bad day for PIV.
  14. "Acute" Care v. "Critical" Care

Is ER considered critical care? Our ETD is lvl 2 trauma.
  15. Do You Wear Gloves When...

oh, plus isn't back massage contraindicated anyways for bed bound pt with redness? They found out that it is more likely to be damaging due to shearing force as Rn/Writer mentioned above and doesn't help circulation nor prevent pressure ulcers.
  16. Do You Wear Gloves When...

I believe the universal precaution states that you don't have to wear gloves for sweat. (Unless you want to b/c it smells really bad!) You only need to wear gloves for urine, feces, blood, spit and broken skin. I graduated in May 08' and that's how...
  17. Time for the Good Ol' job hunt again!

Apply NOW!!! I know some hospitals are accepting nursing residency program application that starts in July now. You are not a new grad, you have 9 months of experience and that's better than people just coming out of college. Don't sell yourself s...
  18. Rutgers vs Kaplan NCLEX reviews

I think I might be too late in replying, but I took the Rutgers Review and I think it was a good refresher that sums up all the practical information, but I don't think it was very helpful. It just helps with your knowledge base. For me, what real...
  19. Congrats! :) I knew you could do it! If you really loved OR, then why go through telemetry?!! I am sure they will train you well before setting your foot through the OR, so don't feel like you have to "warm up" before landing your dream job! :) I...
  20. I think recruiters look at clinical experience and not necessarily hospital experience. I don't know what your position was in the assisted living facility, but as long as you worked there as a RN I think it's fine on your resume. Take the vacation...
  21. Starting to apply for new grad positions - help!

Have you heard of new grad residency program? I would go to job fairs and ask if they have residency program (sometimes called internship) or if they are hiring new nurses. They will usually give you applications and explain how to apply. It's not...
  22. First and foremost, congratulations on your job offer! :) You are right, it is tough times and maybe getting your foot in the door is not a bad idea. I think any experience is better than no experience. Plus, you don't want to be competing for a n...
