CALL BELLS
The other night I shook my husband and told him to get that call light for me... :)

What do I ask oncologist re: brain tumor? What would YOU do?
My first husband died of this brain tumor 6 years ago; he was 30... Our neuro-oncologist was wonderful. We understood that all treatments were to prolong his life; not cure it... He did debulking surgery twice with chemo waffers the last time and also did radiation treatments for about three months... He tried oral chemo and did this until he got too sick to enjoy what time he had left... Then we went the hospice route and he lived 6 more months being able to eat, sleep and make memories with me and our children. I am sorry for the diagnosis and it is going to be a hard long road of many MRI's to see how the tumor has advanced or if it did not grow the past month... That was the hardest, longest and saddest 18 months of my life... I would not have traded them for anything, however. Once you know that you are going to die; you get a different look on life. I now work with cancer patients and have lots to offer them and use my personal experience with my husband dying... Good luck and remember to "Live each day like you were dying..."

need feedback regarding shift choices for practicum...
I have a 35 minute drive to work and home... I work 3 12 hours shifts and love the 4 days off... I would do what you want to do, but I have found that the drive is actually nice. It makes me prepare for work and on the way home, I can relax before dealing with being a wife and mom again... Good luck in whatever you decide...

HELP - I need to interview a charge nurse!!
Key issues to me are that I don't give the RN's a bad assigment; meaning 3 of the 4 are discharges (Leaving them open for all the admissions). I also try to keep the rooms close together so the nurses are not running from one hall to the other... I try to look at acuity of the patients and if they are going to be getting blood, chemo etc. because they are very time consuming... I also look at who has a student nurse for the day or who is orientating because they need a little lesser load too... 2. We don't have any LPN's or such. We have CNA's and they do vitals and chems and help with what is needed, so our RN's are essentially responsible for all the other things that the patient needs... It never fails that I get somebody upset or someone is not happy with the assignment. I had to get thick skin and have told other RN's that they cannot really complain until the are a charge RN and have to make assigments... I do put lots of effort into who I assign to what RN. I believe that continuity of care is essential and that is one of my main priorities when doing assigments... Hope this helped a bit...

Frustrated at being new!
I have been a RN for 14 years and still have days like that... The only difference now is that I really don't let it bother me... Tomorrow is another day and if you did not kill anyone; life is good... lol

I have to brag...
Sure makes a great shift, doesn't it? I think we need to brag and compliment the good; not just talk about the bad...

Started a new job, and wondering if these are signs of bad things to come
You will find that there is school book nursing and 'real world' nursing... You have witnessed the real part... It is up to you on how you decide to practice; Good luck...

Sick days in the US...and job security
I always get a Dr note so if there is ever an issue, I have proof that I was really sick. It is sad that we are the ones to take care of sick people and sometimes, I am more sick than the patients that I take care of. I have had many instances where the patients say to me that I am too sick to be at work; but feel guilty for taking time off... Is that just part of being a RN?

HELP!
It can be dormant in a person's system for years too, so he may not have cheated on her either.

The worst code you've seen?
I was transfering a patient from the bed to the wheelchair and he had his arms around my neck. When moving him, he became limp and I said for him to please help me and stand as tall as possible. He was 300 pounds, 6 foot and I am 175 pounds, 5 foot 3... I looked at his face and eyes were rolled in the back of his head. He fell on top of me and I heard his legs brake. I screamed for help and of course he was in the last room at the end of the hall. RN's came in and said; is he a code? I said, no a DNR, but get him off of me. He actually died on top of me. I will never forget this. I hurt my back and it was not fun. The wife came after I called her and she was worried he died all alone. I told her that I was right with him and saw him take his last breath. I did not tell her that he died on top of me...

Night shifters - are you noctural all the time?
I work 12 hour nights and the night before I work, I sleep from about 10-4; get up to cook and be with my family before work... Then I go to work all night. When I get home, I sleep from about 9-3 if I don't have to work that night; otherwise I try to sleep until 4-5... I can still sleep all day and go to bed with my husband at night. But, I am lucky and have no trouble falling asleep no matter time of the day... Good luck to you and the crazy schedule...

So who do nurses marry or have as civil partners???
My husband is a computer programmer and we met online... He knows not much medically and I know nothing about computers... We fit great.

How quickly does your shift go by?
I work 12 hour nights and usually go by pretty quick. Most patients don't sleep like the world thinks. I spend a lot of quality time teaching and talking with patients and their families... Love nursing.

Having a bad day
My first husband died from a brain tumor and I know how you feel. You want him to live, of course; but feel like you cannot get on with your life until he dies. I felt the same way and part of me was guilty; but the other part was not... My husband lasted 18 months when they gave him 9 and when he did die; I fell apart. I never thought that I could get on with my life. He has been dead 6 years and I am married again. I know; you never think you will find love again, but you will. I think that my first husand sent me my current husband... I have no words to ease things because nothing I say can; just try to enjoy each day; sunset, laugh, smile, hug etc... I am sorry you and your husband have to go through this. Two of the smartest things that he said before he died were; "I have the easy part of dying and you have the hard part of picking up the pieces... And; you will get married again and be happy." Hugs to you...

St. Joseph - Marshfield Critical Care Internship
I was raised in Marshfield and worked at Saint Joe's for 5 years on the cardiac floor. The hospital is great and you will learn a lot. Now, Marshfield is nothing great; especially for single people. It is a small town and we lost a lot of Dr.'s because there is not much to do... I liked the little town and the schools were great for my kids... You will learn a lot, but there is not much else to do... Good luck in what you decide.

Am I being snotty?
I am very proud of my BSN and when I started HR did not put it on... Luckily for me, they gave me a new one with the correct information... Do I think I am better than an ADN? Heck no; but I worked hard and went to 5 years of college for my degree and it makes me feel good that others know it... I know that ADN school is hard too, so I am not dissing that... We are all RN's and should be proud of passing boards to be the RN's we all are; no matter of degree... :)

As a Nurse what are some things that make you sick?
Snot and trachs... When I was pregnant, I could hardly suction a patient... Thank goodness for RT guys/gals... This is silly, but I HATE cotton balls. The sound, the feel... My husband thinks this is funny and puts them all over me... Feels like nails being scratched on a chalkboard... GRRR Also, C-Diff and wounds... I hate oozing wounds that smell... Part of being a RN and when in the room, I act normal because I know if it was me as the patient, I would not want the person taking care of me being all grossed out and all...

So,which states ARE hiring Nurses?
I live in Wisconsin and there are openings. The "thing" I find is that they are hiring casual, so they don't have to pay benefits. I am casual and can work my 3 12's no problem. I have my hubby's benefits, so I can pick my schedule. No weekends or holidays. Not too bad of a deal. Good luck...

How to Supervise "Older" Employees?!?
My first job right out of RN school was a charge RN at a long term care facility. I was supervising other RN's and LPN's who had worked there 30 plus years... I was 22 at the time. It was very intimidating to me because the only reason I was charge was the BSN behind my name... I actually learned more from those women and am grateful for the opportunity... I am now much older and have learned to approach the older RN with respect and to gain as much as I can from them. If you respect them, they will respect you and life will be good...

sick day?
I have gone to work when sick because I would have felt guilty calling in, but a few of my patients said to me that I sounded sicker than they did and should go home... That was when I was a new nurse; now if I am sick or my kids are sick, I call in... I also get a Dr. note whenever I take the kids or myself to urgent care... That way, it is proof that I am sick...

A jaded nurse who cried last night and was renewed as a nurse
My husband does not understand why I read the obituaries. I do this because of the numerous Hospice and pallative patients that I care for and I like to think that I helped them move on... I have been a RN since 97 and hope that I can continue to be as caring as I can and realize we do make a difference in someone's life... :)

Midnight Shift And The Rest Of The World
I have learned to turn off my phone when I am sleeping... I also just had my husband say to me... Why are you tired, you slept all day yesterday... I worked the night before and did not sleep before my night shift... SO, yes I guess I got 6 hours of sleep for two whole days... WOW... How silly of me to be tired... :) I do love nights however, and would not change for anything... Good luck to you
