  1. Another "should I do this".....

Ok... My mom has been pushing me to look at Nursing Informatics. The educator where I recently started my Med/Surg job said the same thing. I really don't want to get the MSN in Informatics if I can't get a job in it! So, those of you who hire: My ...
  2. That nagging feeling...

This wasn't on the floor....this was at home. DH was scheduled for Sx for his hyperparathyroidism. (His initial Dx for that was 28 yrs prior. ) He didn't want anyone "cutting his throat open". Anyway, in the days prior to Sx, he started getting h...
  3. BSN nursing informatics class

Nursecasey2, you beat me to the punch! I am also taking the same class and need to interview someone in nursing informatics! Did you ever get a reply? Anyone want to help this student out as well?
  4. If we had a conservative nurses forum

Would anyone post in it? I looked forward to being a nurse for so long....my second thoughts aren't because of nurses eating their own (I have never seen that!) or hours or mean docs (haven't seen that either)... it is because the only conservatives...
  5. Who's ready for a hospital hurricane party!?!

Our hospital has an exception for nurses that have family members that are first responders. My own situation is a bit odd.....my hubby is Active Duty National Guard. One of his primary roles is the planning, preparation and execution of hurricane...
  6. If you worked FT during nursing school...

I worked an IT job (full time + OT) while going to t FT EVE/WE nursing program. Honestly, I used the weekend to catch up on all studies and assignments. I went straight from work to my evening classes. It was tougher during the first semester beca...
  7. Hospital Beep Syndrome

Ahhhh, the joys of being hearing impaired! When I get home, I pull out my hearing aids......and the silence is blissful! :)
  8. I had a 2.1 at the end of my BE-EE/minor in Physics with 154 credits. The NS I attended counted your pre-reqs only (3.8) and your test score on the NAT. Choose the right school and you should have no problem.
  9. To highlight the examples above.... My brother makes 6 figures as a nurse in NYC (Manhattan specifically). His measley eff apt ran $3K/mo! Then there is the NYS income tax, the NYC income tax, 8.25% sales tax, yadda yadda. I earn $22.05/hr + diffs...
  10. Which shift do you prefer, 7pm-7am or 7am-7pm and why?

7p -7a! I love the night shift. You are crazy busy until about 12, but then you can slow down, check charts, clean up stuff not done on days, get things ready for the day shift so their shift is smoother. Get your charting done. Check on your pat...
  11. Stopping patient care for another patient

In the LTC where I worked, AO3 patients and those with demanding families got the priority because they COULD say bad things, file complaints, et. al. It was a sad state of affairs. In my humbleness, I will state that I no longer allow anything shor...
  12. When the hospital cancels you for a shift...

At my last hospital, this was a weekly/bi-weekly occurrance. We would be paid $2/hr for being placed on stand-by. Once on stand-by, you could be called in at ANY point during the shift. This seriously sucked because I worked nights. When you didn'...
  13. Maybe I just don't know...

Esme, I was replying to a prior post without using the quote feature....so it didn't indicate the link. Libran1984 indicated that she/he uses it for low BP.... sorry for any confusion.
  14. WIA paying for ADN

We didn't get our WIA acceptance until AFTER we were accepted to NS and we had to have BLS before applying to NS...so, in my case, NO, WIA did not pay for it.
  15. I *never* friend co-workers.....well, one exception (she and I were NS classmates and now work on the same floor). My posts are either family or old friend stuff, silly stuff or, much to many a person's chagrin - political. I have insisted that my c...
  16. Am I cut-out for ED nursing?

I've been working MS for 8 months and one thing I learned was how much I *didn't* know! It does take experience to recognize certain things going on with your patients. IMHO, ER acuity was too risky for me to not know quickly what was happening to ...
  17. Maybe I just don't know...

Just wanted to point out that research has shown that Trendelenburg is not effective and is no longer being recommended.
  18. How come no one will call me?

I would advise 2 things....get on a MS floor in the hospital where you want to work. That is your foot in the door. Also, get your ACLS...you will need that to work in ICU.
  19. New grad, job on MS floor, 6 week orientation. Freak out.

My first hospital had a 12 week orientation....and I thought that was a pretty good set up. My second hospital has 6 week orientation. I am glad that I had the experience I had before I got hired here! I believe the amount of orientation and or pa...
  20. LTC does not equal RN experience?

My first job was in LTC and I was only there for 3 months. I highlighted the high acuity patients in our facility on my resume. I was able to get a hospital job. No one said that my experience in LTC is not RN experience.
  21. New Nurse--They Said I Couldn't Handle It

64 patients by yourself?!?!?! If so, that is LUDICROUS! I worked LTC and had 28 - 30 per shift and that was tough enough to make med passes by 11 PM.....I would never work with that many patients.
  22. Need advice for NCLEX from RNs who didnt pass the first time

Trust yourself. One thing I learned from my mother was never to 'second guess' yourself. If you choose answer "a" but go back and think maybe it's "b"....and change your answer.....more than likely, you were right the first time. I agree with the '...
  23. Im a new nurse..please help!!!

It is a bit hard to follow through your posts. Did you tell the board that you had a conviction @18 that was expunged? The application for nurse in FL is very clear....you must disclose ALL convictions regardless of expungement or withheld adjudica...
  24. Retraining Displaced Workers As Nurses

Regarding retraining into STEM fields....THOSE fields are ripe with outsourcing! I did IT for 18 yrs. I got laid off every 2 to 3 yrs during that period of time. My retraining into nursing was paid for by the state of Florida (Worksource). You ca...
  25. Nursing orientation/retention

As a new nurse, here is a dilemma you have to 'resolve'... Med/Surg is a high turnover location because most nurses do not want to work on Med/Surg. This is usually your entry point into hospital nursing. As soon as you have your 1 year in, you are...
