I took Micro and A&P II online with CCCOnline. You will not only have to buy the lab kit but you will also need to purchase the microscope and oil lens immersion kit. There is a CD with all of the lab procedures and yes they do send everything to your house. You have to refridgerate most of it and yes there are a lot of growing things in the micro class. All I did was to buy a lamp and use the thermometer that comes with the lab kit to get it to the right temp. I had to leave some of my things for a week with the lamp on all the time. There were other people in class who used a shoe box but I'm not sure how they fit the agar samples in there. There is a lab help section if you have any issues and the lab instructor usually responds within 24 hours. My advice if you do take the class is to make sure all the experiments are done ahead of time. So, if it takes 3 days to grow something make sure you start it on a Saturday if it is due the next Friday. That way you will have time to re-grow something if it doesn't turn out quite right. It was a fun class. I had two 5-page papers that I had to do in addition to all of the labs. I think there were 14 or 15 and tests on a weekly basis in addition to the weekly discussions. ZooMommy - Why did this debate take a turn for the worse? I'm just calling it like I see it. Farmer Jane just inferred that I was acting as Tartuffe. I am not being that way at all. My way of thinking may be just a little idealistic but at least I do not judge other people because of circumstances out of their control.

Ok. I had to sit and read through this thread and it is making me really mad, not defensive, but really mad and a little sad to be honest. If some of you grew up with different roots you would be offended as to the OP comments as well. I honestly don't think the OP was trying to insult anyone. I think that she grew up with a lot of the same kinds of people I did. People who have money and only live one way grow up knowing the same people from the same old groups. I actually had a friend of mine ask me once, "Have you ever seen an African-American?" Ignorant beyond belief!!! My "bearing" was from high class. The difference is my grandparents and parents never believed in a class system. We would go every Christmas Eve to a homeless shelter and help pass out food. We lived in a modest house in a middle class neighborhood. I went to public school. I am becoming a nurse because I want to help PEOPLE. PEOPLE from all walks of life. It doesn't matter if they are young or old, rich or poor, EVERYONE has something to contribute to this life here on earth. No one can help if they were born into money, without money, if their parents were good providers, hard-workers, drug dealers. We just don't control these things. So, for ANYONE, to look down on someone else, regardless of their "bearing" is plain, old, simple stupidity. You are all adults, I would like to believe, start opening your eyes to what is around you. That is the only way that you are going to make a difference in this world, no matter what job you decide on doing. For anyone who is reading this, what random acts of kindness have you done recently, not in your job but just in the community. For the good of someone? This is a hard situation. There's no way that I could ever pay for school with cash so instead I took a year off school and worked my hiney off in a field which I hate but where I also make good money. That allowed me to pay off my car and save a little towards my mortgage. I use loans for the rest of it. There are work study programs at school. Can you work as a CNA full time at night? You can be a home health care aid which may allow you study time. I know that it's hard to find overnight care for your little one but it can be done and is usually cheaper than day time care. Can you sell your car and take the bus? Or maybe find someone that lives close to you where you can share communting costs? Otherwise a retail job on the weekends might be something to consider. Have you looked into getting a roommate? Or roommateS? Or selling something that you own? If you look hard enough I know you can make it! Good luck and keep us posted!

This isn't correct. Sallie Mae is NOT Fannie Mae's sister. Sallie Mae is government run. You are dealing with two entirely difference subjects. I am in the mortgage industry (which, yes, is going to H*(( in a handbasket). Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac deal with mortgages. I'm sure this is where the confusion is coming in. The HOUSING industry is what is going wrong, not the student loan industry. Although private loans will continue to tighten their credit ratings, you should be fine with Sallie Mae. The person does not want you to tell them what they are doing with the money because student loans are not to pay off credit card debt. They are for you to pay your student loans, school items and a small portion of your housing with. The lady who told you not to tell her that did you a favor...we have to report what is told to us which may lead you to an automatic denial. Good luck.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE being goofy during class and lab!!! It's the only way to get through some of the most mind-numbing common sense things! I don't interrupt the class and contribute plenty but I also like to make things fun. I have a lot of students who like being in my group in lab because not only are we having fun but we are learning more than most groups. I would NEVER act like this in clinicals or with real people. I think that's it's really sad that people lose everything and have to rely on other people to do the simplest tasks and I only hope that I can make a good difference in every life I touch. BUT, it is okay to have fun in life and in school. It's even sometimes okay to have fun while working (not in an obnoxious way). Humor is what makes the world go round. Good luck in clinicals.

This happens everywhere and I admit that I have been on both sides of the coin. When I first started working I was made to feel as if I was always in the way, always asking questions that made me feel "stupid" and I always felt that I couldn't do the job. All I can say is hang in there. Do what you need to do to pick up on the things you are there to learn. The nurses do not OWN the hospital and they are there to teach, if that is what their facility expects from them. Be professional and nice to everyone and remember that the nurses there work hard. It is HARD to take someone under your wing and teach while you are trying to prioritize your day! It takes three times as long to get anything accomplished while nurses are teaching. Have a little patience and help whenever you can. On the other side of the coin...I have been the one training as well, sometimes as many as 10 people at once. I had the busiest work load of anyone in the company and I had to train as well. Again, this is not an easy task. There were times when I told the trainees to go on a break because I had an emergency that I had to take care of. I was probably a little short with them but when they came back I explained to them the situation and what to do to avoid it (or to learn from it). The worst trainees are the people who just don't get it. It's okay to explain something once or twice but when you have to repeat the same thing over and over again, it gets to a point where I have to tell someone to go look it up in their book, review it overnight and get back to me the next day. I agree with the other poster too...if you are not professional, or together, I wouldn't want to work with you either. Not saying this is you but just in general. Hope this helps and good luck. Time by myself in nature. Sitting and listening to the world around me. 5. Knowing that when I graduate I will be giving opportunities to my child that no one gave to me. (Like being able to pay for his college). 6. Knowing that when I graduate I will be able to make a difference in the world, even if it is to just one person. Above all, keeping a positive attitude about life and my decisions!

To me it sounds like you are young, right out of high school maybe? If this is the case, you have all kinds of time to figure out what you want to do as a career. We have a girl in class who is 18 who said that she likes numbers better than nursing so she is going back to accounting. That's what is best for her and I applaud her for knowing what she wants to do! If I were you I would talk to a career advisor and let them do some tests on your personality to see where you would be a great fit and then go try some classes. Even if you sit in on them for the first two weeks and decide they aren't for you, at least you've tried! You will find the right fit and it will just click. I wouldn't get a nursing degree just to get a degree though. I would choose something you love and get a degree in that. It just makes sense. Good Luck!!!

I'm so sorry about that. That is crazy! It sounds like it's worth it to pay a little extra just to get your career started. DSON is too far for me to drive but maybe I should look at some private schools down here. Thanks for letting me know.

For my two cents. Fort Collins was voted the best place to live for 2 years in a row by Fortune Magazine. Small, family friendly, not very expensive and growing. There is a college there too but the community is still very nice. Boulder is okay. If you like to ride bikes that is a great place to be. Many people in Colorado consider it to be the "hippie place to live". University of Colorado is also located in Boulder so many, many college students and little town is gearing toward those college students. Castle Rock is between Denver and Colorado Springs, south from Denver but only a 20 minute commute to Denver and SkyRidge Hospital. Castle Pines is a really expensive area but Castle Rock is not too bad. Castle Rock has that old town feel with movies on the rock in the summer with lots of parades and great shopping in small town stores. Not such a great commute in the winter time to Denver, but that's only when it snows, which suprisingly is not that much in Colorado. The mountains are okay to live in too but not too many job opportunities since that is such a popular place to live and not very many residents, etc. Super expensive as well. Good luck!!!

No offense, but I would never tell anyone they were "annoying" me. If someone told me that I would tell them the fact they put it that way annoyed me! And who wins? Nobody. It's okay to feel the way you do and express it on these boards but when you start pushing your feelings off on someone else, it just makes everyone feel bad. It's the same with the sighs and the looks in class. You shouldn't bring everyone else down because you are feeling a certain way. It's a little selfish, don't you think? No one should have to "act" the way you want them to and most people will NOT act the way you want them to. It's part of professionalism to deal with different people and different ways people do things. Is it always pleasant? No. Is it really up to you to want to change the way a person behaves? No. Just my two cents. :wink2:

Is there anyone out there on the waiting list? If so, how long have you been/were on it? Is it going faster now that the there is a spring and fall semester starting? Anyone getting discouraged? We have people in class that constantly talk while the lecture is going on. They don't even notice when the instructor stops talking until one of the people in the front row scream behind them to be quiet! People also like to talk to me and still don't get the hint that I won't even turn my head to listen to them or talk back! It drives me crazy! I've even changed seats and they follow me. . Helloooooo, get the hint??? I have tried to reward myself for not blowing up on these people (something that is just my personality to do) by renting a movie every Friday night. When someone starts this rude behavior and I want to vent on them, I just think about my movie that is sitting at home waiting for me and start to relax. I also count the number of weeks I have left in that particular class and can check off every Friday as well. It helps me to stay motivated and not get distracted by certain people. I am there to get myself ahead after all!!!

I once had a situation where I worked where the atmosphere was, drink or be in the "out" crowd, which means never promoted or never a pay raise. So, one night, I went out with these people from work and got so drunk and started kissing on this guy (also from same work place). Went to work the next day and told a few of my "friends" who then told this guy - WHO DENIED IT! He made such a big deal out of it that I was the talk in the workplace for several months!!! My boss even came to me and was trying to be sympathetic but came off condescending stating that it was a form of sexual harrasment to be "making up stories" about fellow co-workers! Only, I didn't make it up! It really happened!!! I decided to continue working there and when people would bring it up, I would change the subject. Finally, it got old and people started to forget about it. Several life lessons learned from me: 1. Never pee in the company pool. 2. Keep your private life private. 3. Keep your eye on the ball. I was there to work. Not socialize! 4. This too, shall pass. 5. Gossip people move on. They don't want to gossip over the same thing over and over. They get bored and will move on. Just don't give these people anymore ammunition. 6. If you quit, they win. Keep on, keeping on. Just remember that in everything hard in life, there comes a lesson (or several). Keep remembering those lessons so you don't repeat your mistakes.

Hi Kiringat - I am in the Colo. Springs area also. There are a lot of activities that you can do here. I suggest looking on experiencecoloradospring.com or you can look in Craigslist for a "club" to join, like a book club or scrapbooking or whatever you are into. You can join a church. If you have kids you can join Mommy and Me groups, etc. There are a lot of activities that center in Colorado Springs so get out and enjoy! Good luck, Kelly
