  1. well,it was just a thought.we are getting ready for this hurricane.we are expecting a direct hit or at least a lot of wind damage.pray i will still have a house standing after the hurricane.wish you the best of luck in your situation.i had a homecare pt a year ago that sounds very similar.nothing we could do would help.and i mean nothing.
  2. perhaps she would be a good candidate for some type of pet therapy,if her facility has that available.you might be surprised
  3. I went in to work after several phone calls from my employer regarding me refusing to take report and that entire mess.yes,i got blasted when i came to work for about an hour. They attempted to try to tell me i misunderstood the assignment and told me i had been told on friday we would be short-staffed.i said no way,no one told me anything.then it was blamed on all the noise in the report/break area.hmmm...nope.that didn't work with me either.yes,my name is mud with administration and i look for one of 2 things to happen:they will eventually cut my schedule little by little until i have no hours or make it so unbearable i leave.let the incidental write up games begin!yes,i can get another job in a flash.but not for the same $ i make now in a small area and time flexibility.guess the part of the job description i missed was being the whipping boy for administration's mess-ups.and you know what made it even better : the nurse that stayed until the administrator arrived ranted and raved about how she had to stay out of duty to her fellow nurses(a whole hour)and another nurse( who never even worked that day mind you)joined her in the tirade.this facility is now currently 90%agency- no kidding.i wonder why :chuckle
  4. I had one of those shifts last night(because of management, not patients) :angryfire .All I can tell you is today is another day and hope you have a better shift next time.
  5. I wil never be accused of being underweight-lol,but have known many skinny minny nurses (young and older alike)that were more than capable of all the requirements to be a spectacular nurse. :)
  6. I understand 100%.Last night for the first time I stood up for myself at the beginning of the shift(for an unsafe staffing ratio). One nurse was never scheduled(this seems to be the new norm the last 2 weeks). The attitude seems to be well it's sunday afternoon no administration around to hear the complaints.so what else will the nurses do but work and just deal with it today.yesterday was one time too many in the last 3 weeks.i sat down in a chair and announced to the off going shift that i would not be getting report until at we were staffed with at least bare minimums.further stating no facility was worth my license and it was not abandonment unless i accepted the assignment ,then left.(not to mention that i was orienting a brand new nurse on the 3rd day).the administator(who has not done floor nursing for at least 3 years and into her 60's)told me i had to take report.i refused and sat there.she asked me what i suggest she do on such short notice(no one volunteered to stay!)i suggested she come in and work the shift herself as she asssumed that responsibility with that position or sit there and call around for the next 2 hours to find agency.i wanted more than a warm body.she showed up an hour later-busiest shift in months.she thought i had the easy assignment and hijacked my patients-already settled for the shift.2 of them went bad on her time.she had to run her cheeks off .she threatened my job and refuses to speak to me.the walmart greeter position or 7-11 store clerk sounds better and better.last night made me sad to be a nurse
  7. I am an RN and my husband is in the medical field, but not a nurse. He is a firefighter/emt going thru paramedic training. He was never interested in the medical field until i went to nursing school.he used to say he was in awe of me because i was a nurse.now he has "the curse" and thinks he knows more than any nurse(especially me) :chuckle it was easier when he was just a plain guy with a regular job.we can't watch an episode of er or any tv show without a complete critique. all i can say is that it is just tv.he used to say he should go to nursing school when he was done with the other stuff.i couldn't imagine cohabitating with someone else that worked in the same hospital or medical area.too close to home for me.seems the curiosity of nursing has left him ...for now.
  8. I work in the same county where this lady died.i was shocked to see this story from our area,as it is a hole in the wall little town.i work for the county jail,so this was closer to home than just picking up the paper.it was true about having to bring her to the hospital, sofa and all.very sad.

I work in a busy county jail.we have an old retired md that comes in 2 days a week for clinic and we rely on our np to come in for sutures, relocations,i&d's for staph cases, etc.most of her business with us is for sutures.
  10. I work in a county jail and we are subject to the "state"inspections as well.it is always a lot of fun.it has been known to happen on any shift one night they came in at mn and stayed til 4 am,then returned the same day at 3 pm and didn't leave until 12 mn.it was unreal.of course it must have looked a little odd to the inspectors with all of these nurses running around (that were never staffed on that shift to begin with or that many on one shift-ever)with all these sets of keys to unlock doors, drawers and cabinets that had never been locked before.we were all whispering which key opens this, etc.the administrators worked 11-7 for 6 months(no kidding)to audit charts, paint, etc.then as soon as they left,it has all gone back to the same old stuff.not enough staff,no qa,no follow through on anything.but plenty of lip service to keep us quiet. wouldn't it be easier to just maintain what they worked so long and hard to create, rather than have to do all of this again in a year or 2?
  11. finding an eyeball that had rolled away under a cell door.this is what happens when prisoners push eachother off of the second tier onto the cold hard cement below....face first.that was a little disturbing
  12. The only sin about all white is seeing your panty lines and bra outline.stopped wearing all white real fast after working in jail and prison-all men:chuckle
  13. There was an article at work tonite about 2 nuses in a jail who didn't call the md about a juvenile having abdominal pain.they wre afraid to call at nite because of past explosions from the md.kid dies.both nurses arrested for murder.
  14. 78 degrees here on the beach in Fla all day, turning cold as icecubes right now.Went in to do a home care admission, very warm.came out to freezing my orifice off 1 1/2 hours later:eek:
  15. We have 2 small hospitals in my county;not much chance for privacy. After the renal insufficiency/failure started last July/Aug ,I was a frequent flier for about 3 months.I would put my hair up,not come in in my scrubs(why do some medical people do this?)as a pt,do anything i could to look like a normal sick person, not a nurse.never failed someone would recognize me.Oh you are a nurse?didn't you work upstairs? They made it real obvious to explain what meds/tests/ test results I was getting back..Check the arm band, etc.after the 4th time in the er in 3 weeks, triage would say Oh that nurse is back with the kidney problems as I was headed to a stretcher.at that time i wanted to be anything but a nurse in that hospital;just wanted to be anonymous. :)
  16. you asked about near death experience.I' don't know what to call it,but it was an experience.I had a lot of bleeding after my son was born.i went back to the or the next day to see what was going on.i remember waking up in post op and feeling like someone was choking me and trying to sit up grabbing my throat, then it all went black.I then was looking at myself on the bed for a brief second from the corner of the room. Then i was back in the bed with someone calling my name, but i was so tired and far away from them.I opened my eyes and looked up in the corner. Two black floating "things" without facial features that had the appearance of human form were floating in that corner.they were talking to each other without speaking for a little while. they turned to me and told me it's not time to go yet.I remember being shaken and poked and prodded.Multiple staff were all around me calling my name and shaking me.I was told i sat up and pointed to that area and was saying "take me with you"over and over afterwards.i had an almost deadly reaction to anesthesia and had to be zapped. 3 times.i really freaked the Mds and nurses out.i worked in ICU at this hospital. The black things followed us in the elevator to my room, then left.I don't know what or who they were, but that's ok.:chuckle Now I can really tell a lot of times if pts pr people in general are going to die soon.it is creepy.I guess those things left more here than they took with them.
  17. Another agency nurse( where we both have been contracted for a long period of time in the same facility) had some family problems and ended up being drug tested.drugs were an issue for a family member, but not for her.right after this incident ,I had a call at home from the facility(not the agency) asking me if i was on any narcotics out of the blue;she said it was rumored that i was on opiates.News to me She refused to tell me who and why.I asked if there was some type of med error, did someone die, reasonable concern to be asking me this?no response.Called the agency pronto. No one knew anything about it.It turns out that administration assumed because one person's family member got in trouble and our children associate together,we were all guilty!she assumed that because of my health concerns,i musy be on narcotics for pain.all the nurses were really busy with that one.I made a loud announcement to the entire change of shift that i was not on any drugs and posted my drug test results on the bulletin board for all to see.that rumor went away fast.i didn't mind being tested at all:it was just how everyone else discussed it and i had no clue.So a word to the wise:be careful what you take because one never knows when it will come back to haunt someone.thank goodness i only have a few more weeks on this contract.
  18. Do not think it is ok to put just a few drops of Visene in your friend's iced tea to see what will happen. She will not appreciate the severe unexplained abdominal pain that lasts for hours.nor will she appreciate the thousands of dollars spent on invasive tests and multiple pokings and proddings as the perplexed er staff tries to figure out why you are screaming in agony for hours. It says for external use only for a very good reason........
  19. There is more to nursing than 12 hour shifts and more families that care for the nurses than are a pain in the rear, regardless of what you may hear or read on this board.mabye this lady is just trying to be assured that her spouse is being taken care of to the best of her ability?i bet she will drive everyone so crazy that she will make sure he never ever gets a decubit has to be your decision for what is right for you ,but it sounds like you are a very caring person:kiss
  20. I will tell you about some of the ghostly experiences on death row and prison after this weekend.I am not meaning to ruin the day,but I have to attend a funeral on Sat.I need to get myself together and then will tell all about the inmates that never leave.
  21. I have a similar situation. I am an RN.He is a firefighter/emt,soon to be in paramedic school because of his job requirement. He was not in the medical field before this,so all of this was new to him.At first he was in awe of me being a nurse.he acted like nurses were super human. Then after emt/ff school and a few shifts on a rig for a tranport company,he thought that him and his friends were experts on it all.Now after a year of actually working in a real firestation and a real ambulance,he has discovered that just because it says it in a book, doesn't necessarily mean it is so. It has been an interesting journey to see him come to appreciate the meaning of the words"wow, you wouldn't believe the shift I had today":chuckle He keeps asking me when am I going to get a real nursing job again.I work agency on a contract in a county jail right now.He thinks a real nursing job is in an ICU or ER only.Let him do what I do for a day!
  22. Worked on a dual diagnosis and regular psych floor. The AA and NA people would always bring in donations of cigs as"patient cigs" or ones leaving would donate.Amazing!
  23. I worked at a state prison for 2 years.I could tell you some really scary stories about night shift and empty death row cells.........
  24. I am still surprised how many feelings and opinions this thread had provoked. It's just amazing how some people can be so judgemental.I'm not saying I approve or disapprove, but if this person can pass the entrance exams and passes the interviews then she should be allowed to attend school. It sounds like this person has been put on trial, convicted and sentenced by the court of public opinion. The offense:marching to the beat of a different drum.I do think the nursing instructors and this student should agree to some ground rules regarding a uniform assignment and many other things before the school term begins as this is unchartered territory.this may help this person be protected from attack from instructors or offending others. What are they afraid of?That if they allow this once,it will be a become the norm?In nursing school,I threw a Christmas party with about 150 invitations sent out.I invited certain ones from school, including some of the instructors.A lot of them knew that I lived with my brother while in school(single mom-3 small kids)and that he is gay and a female impersonator as a profession. They were told up front that a mix of people would be at this party.I was the only student in class to have such guests such as Cher and Madonna-lol.Some of them are transexuals, others just dress up.It was an educational experience for the students and instructors alike.:roll Now some of the "stars" are in nursing school or have graduated. They all did fine.
  25. RNntraining1973,I had the same thing happen to me. Dated a guy in high school for 2 years.Everyone used to tell me he wasn't straight, but I never saw it.He moved to Las Vegas and found me on the internet years later. He informed me he is indeed gay and has been happy in a relationship for years. He also told me I helped to make him that way, whatever that was supposed to mean.I was born in 1973.Wierd coincidence!
