  1. Chlorhexidine and dematitis (contact)

My reply is the same as Banora. My old hospital had hand sanitizer with it and it made me break out in contact dermatitis. I went to the derm, that's what he suggested was the culprit, and it resolved a couple weeks after I stopped using it. Good l...
  2. My Favorite Pen Has Been Banned! Help!!!!

I like the free pens we get from the organ donation center or the eye bank. They're triangle shaped, black, and always write wonderfully. Weird, I know.
  3. panic attacks

I had a panic attack at work once. I'm now medicated. Best decision ever. I didn't ever realize how depressed and anxious I was until I felt btter.
  4. Wanting to live in WA sooo bad

Check out the Tri Cities area (Kadlec Hospital, Kennewick General are two hospitals)... the pay is better than Spokane, cost of living is cheaper than Seattle, and the nursing market isn't as saturated as it can be elsewhere. There are jobs in Washin...
  5. Can't take the hospital drama anymore...hospice for me?

I moved 3 hours from my home town and am currently working in a similar environment. Some days are worse than others. The unit I came from was amazing. I had great coworkers and we were very much a team. It's not everywhere, but it's hard to come ...
  6. I'd suggest if you find yourself in this situation, start looking through the chart before you pop in on the patients. Check out labs, history, code status, plan, etc. Then you have at least have some background on the patient even before you get rep...
  7. "...Nurses are Doctors SKIVVIES"

It's a general statement. I don't hate most doctors, just the ones we all hate. And I can interact with people I don't like in a respectful manner. It's part of being a professional adult.
  8. "...Nurses are Doctors SKIVVIES"

This made me laugh. Not at you, it was truly amusing to me. Please chart in poetic form at least once...
  9. Karma Kicks back or I was eaten as a student

Funny how life works out, isn't it? I had a terrible preceptor my last semester of nursing school. I cried a lot. I doubted myself as a future nurse. She was an NP student at the time. She graduated her program, but was never able to pass boards to ...
  10. "...Nurses are Doctors SKIVVIES"

I went back to my highschool during my freshman year of college and in conversation with my old chemistry teacher, I mentioned I was going into nursing. He said "why not be a doctor? You're smart. don't sell yourself short by going into nursing." Uh...
  11. Nursing school is awful in so many ways....

Focus on school, your family, and your outside friends. Do what you need to do to succeed and get out. Then it doesn't matter. Our nursing program was actually pretty good. We had a small class and we all got along for the most part. Yeah, there were...
  12. Giving Tobramycin nebs while pregnant

I'd talk to your OB and do some research. Congrats on the pregnancy and good luck!
  13. Night Shifters... How do you do it?

I take Melatonin to sleep. Day or night. The day before my first night back I usually sleep until 10am then take a nap late evening and stay up until 5am. Then I sleep until 3 or 4pm, get up, get ready, work. After work I take a melatonin, shower, e...
  14. Night Shifters... How do you do it?

Provigil... what is this pharmaceutical you speak of and why have I not tried this...
  15. A step backwards: Are you seeing this too?

We don't have weekend options. Somehow it got put into the contract that if you work 2 weekends in a row they have to pay you overtime and you can't opt out. I understand that it's there to protect us, but for the love of pete... if someone wants to ...
  16. cardiac arrest

First of all, know the procedure for calling a code at your site. Second, CALL FOR HELP. Start checking pulses, dropping the bed, etc. People will be there to take over in no time when you start yelling "I NEED HELP! CODE BLUE (or whatever they cal...
  17. Anyone else dealing with unemployment $ (BLEEP!)?

Depends on where you're at. It took me 6 weeks to find a job. I have 3 years of varied experiences, good references, and was willing to take anything.
  18. Anyone else dealing with unemployment $ (BLEEP!)?

I got denied the same week I found a job. It depends on where you're at, but you can appeal for back pay. One of my friends appealed and won, but it took several months for it.
  19. Pregnant in the ICU

Yeah... just be careful of the petri dish patients and try not to take them if possible... lol
  20. Pregnant in the ICU

Heavy lifting/pulling/boosting/etc. H1N1.... I'm not pregnant yet but those are my biggest concerns. Talk to your OB as well and see what concerns (if any) they might have. Also, talk to other nurses that have been pregnant and see what they sugges...
  21. Anyone else dealing with unemployment $ (BLEEP!)?

I jumped through hoops and was ultimately denied 8 weeks later. No pay. They said one of the reasons you can qualify for unemployment is if you move more than 50 miles from your job to follow a spouse's job or something like that. We moved 3 hrs away...
  22. Kootenai is nice, but you won't get many really sick critical patients. They get shipped to Spokane.
  23. Have you ever had a pt that you knew in real life?

I give them to someone else. It happened a couple times in my previous town and I'd answer their call light or help with a boost, but I wouldn't take them in my assignment.
  24. Sometimes you can say it til your blue in the face in all kinds of plain language and they still won't hear it.
  25. Is this normal?

Call. I had a c-spine fracture (and hematoma) patient one night who had terrible burning/tingling pain in his hands and only his hands. Moving all extremeties, alert and oriented, neurologically intact. We started him on our solumedrol protocol and...
