  1. Maybe bedside nursing isn't for me

OK, it's been 2.5 years since I got my ASN. I've tried Med Surg and CCU. I'm starting to think that bedside nursing just isn't my thing. What other areas could I look into.
  2. What is Home Health like

I'm thinking of giving Home Health a try. Can anyone in this area of nursing describe their job to me I'm wondering about hours, duties, a routine. Anything would be a help!
  3. Maybe bedside nursing isn't for me

I just don't enjoy it like I thought I would. I need a stable routine. I don't like not knowing what kind of shape my floor will be in each night as I head to work. I was happy at my registration & billing jobs but had to go back to school for...
  4. If you were my preceptor......what should I know?!

Most of this sounds exactly like what I do on my general Med/Surg floor. What differences in nursing can I expect to see in ICU?
  5. Dear Student Nurse - a mentor's lament

Sadly, I've seen more nurses behave this way than nursing students. When I was in school, everyone was so careful to follow all the rules. Now that I'm a nurse, it blows my mind how some of my co-workers behave when on-the-clock.
  6. How do I get a job in ED?

I've been working Med/Surg for about 9 months. I can handle the work load just fine, but I've come to the conclusion that I don't want to spend the rest of my life on a Med/Surg floor. I worked as a Tech in ED before starting nursing school & I...

    What's SATA?
  8. Am I being snotty?

I got my pic changed because I needed a new dye job in the old one. Of course my new one actually looks worse!
  9. Usually 1:1 and sometimes 1:2 at my place. 1:3 just does not sound safe.
  10. Maybe I'm not nursing material?

I've had my license about 2 months but I'm beginning to wonder if I've just not got what it takes to be a nurse. I feel like I didn't learn anything in nursing school. I suck at picking up lung sounds. When everyone else is charting fine crackles...
  11. How do I study for NCLEX?

I've got about 3 weeks until I take the NCLEX. I'm trying to come up with a plan for the most effective studying. I've got a book by Saunders that is somewhat of a study guide, however, it doesn't have any questions. I'm thinking I'd be better serve...
  12. How do I study for NCLEX?

I passed! 95 questions/1.5 hours. No OB questions, woo hoo! Now I just have to learn how to be a nurse. I'm feeling a little overwelmed on the floor. Thanks for all the input guys !!!!!
  13. I'm in the traditional ASN program at my school. Half of my classmates are on the traditional track and the other half are transitioning from LPN. One of our careplan questions is, "What RN knowledge did you apply today?" I wasn't worried until the...
  14. How do I study for NCLEX?

In a perfect world, I'd have plenty of time to study & I could wait & look for a job when it was the most convenient. In reality: my husband cheated on me during NS & we divorced. Now I've got 2 kids to provide for & no support from h...
  15. How do I study for NCLEX?

I have 60 days to take (& pass) NCLEX to keep my position. I can't postpone it. I have to keep a roof over me & my 2 kids heads. My Tech salary was OK to pay the bills until my husband (now Ex-husband) hit the bricks. Now, the Extern sala...
  16. How do I study for NCLEX?

I wish I could afford the Kaplan class, but it isn't in my budget at this time. My employer will reimburse the cost once you become licensed, but that doesn't help me to pay for it now. I also wish I had 3 months to prepare for the exam, but my empl...
  17. I'm in my final semester of an ASN program, 12 weeks from graduation, & I feel like I don't know anything. I've given 3 shots, done 1 dressing change, d/c'd 2 IV's & that's about it. I've given no IV pushes or piggybacks, not put in or d/c'...
  18. Did the TEAS test today

At my school we could take the TEAS 3 x's in 2 years. All the ATI exams are graded by percentiles. It's not so much about the # of right and wrong as it is a matter of scoring higher than a certain number of students across the nation. For example, ...
  19. graduate in 3 months & I don't know anything?

No need to apologize. It does seem ridiculous, doesn't it? As far as meds go, our instructor has decided that we aren't passing any meds this semester. Apparently, the hospital's electronic RX system is too difficult to handle with students in tow....
  20. I shadowed a RN in surgery one day. I'm still not sure what her duties were. She spent a lot of time sitting on a stool reading the newspaper & she never touched the patient once. She and the Doc did get into a couple arguements about equipment. ...
  21. graduate in 3 months & I don't know anything?

Believe me, assertiveness has never been a problem for me. All the floor nurses know what we students can & can't do. I've never had a floor nurse deny me a learning experience or cut me out on a procedure I needed to do. The problem is, you ca...
  22. Care Plan 3 part goal statement?

I can't exactly get the 3 part thing figured out. My main diagnosis is pain. My goal is to have my patient's pain at an acceptable level in one hour. That states a goal & a measurable time frame, but what am I missing. I've definitely not got...
  23. dressing change confusion

My patient's chart said "change dressings PRN". I found no other information. How do I know if I need to do a sterile dressing change or just aseptic? If I can't see under the main pad, how do I know what supplies I'll need to do the job? These a...
  24. good head-to-toe assessment routine

I want to be able to do my initial head-to-toe assessment in an orderly and efficient manner. I feel like I'm all over the place, jumping from here to there & then remembering something and jumping back to another place. What is your typical ro...
  25. I just started the 3rd semester in my ASN program last week. I'm so totally, freaking out right now. The last 2 semesters, all the students were, pretty much, at the same skill/experience level. Now, we've been joined by the LPN's in the Transitio...
