  1. Circulators- (or other nurses that take call) What kind of cool call schedules does your facility have?
  2. I have seen hundreds of successful procedures and lives improved by us in the OR. The few that we have taken to ICU knowing that they were going to die, came from ICU knowing that surgery only improved their chance of survival by a small percent, and yes, we rushed them back to the UNIT to die with their family. As for a Lap Chole going bad....that is a whole other story that you may want to find out what was really wrong with the procedure/surgeon.
  3. CRNA is more school and yes, anyone can obtained this status. You would be able to see first hand before going back to school if you are interested in this. Do I ever get bored? I have not been there long enough. I have been there about a year but I also do other projects on behalf of my OR for the Health System that I work for. I do not know if you can ever really get too bored as you are constantly getting new employees to train, new surgeons, new ways to do procedures and every case is a little different.
  4. So far OR=0 and ICU = 1........ I work in the OR so let me get a point in for them. We have a set schedule....normally M-F with weekends and holidays off. I have to be on call evening/night during the week, one weekend day a month and one holiday a year. I can go ahead and plan for all of the holidays during the year to be with family and friends. Now to nursing.....I have one patient in the OR. I meet them in SDS and then they put all of their trust in my team (and I call them mine as I will explain later) as we take them to surgery. I try to put their fears at ease as they slip off to sleep. I then have to be incharge of the room and everything that goes on with in it. I am THEIR voice. I now have to be the nurse to the patient, the surgeons, the anesthesia, the scrubs, the floor nurses that are constantly calling the surgeons to ask questions, the PACU/SDS that needs to ask one question about the last or the next patient, and back to being the patient's voice. I then have to get the patient to recovery, give report, turn-over (clean) the room, get report on the next patient and get them into the room in less than 19 mins making sure that I have all of the meds and supplies that I need for the case. But I love my job............... Ask me any questions and I'll answer as soon as I can.
  5. We get a $1 for OR and $ for BSN
  6. We are located in West Atlanta and have 5 hospitals and many doctor's offices. If you want to talk more, message me. If you apply and put my name on the application, I'd split my referral bonus.
  7. Sorry to smile at your post but I have felt this way so many times. I have been in the OR for about 14 months but because I am the superuser for the OR Electronical chart I have only been in the rooms for about 7 months. I am finally feeling comfortable but I find that I am improving and still learning every day. Don't give up just take time at the end of the day to review what it is that you did both good and bad for the day's events. Good Luck!!! (message me if you want to chat)
  8. Forgive the new nurse....but what is this??
  9. I am going to have to try this!! Just too funny...
  10. It is amazing to me how the cleanest looking person can have such nasty belly buttons.
  11. Just thinking of something that has changed since starting in the OR....... I have a cleaner umbilicus. Anyone agree?? If you don't, have you done your share of Laparoscopic procedures?
  12. We only wear them when the set-up is open in the room.
  13. We are required to do less than 19 mins or we have to write and incident report stating the reason that we could not get it accomplished. It happens most of the tie but I hate it when the doc thinks that we have taken too long because it was a complicated anesthesia wake-up after the surgeon has already left the room.
  14. I have this problem and I work as an OR Nurse. I find it easier to control because we are able to wear the hair nets that are material and I have some made with a sweat band for the forehead. It works out great and I only notice sweat in other areas when I wear the lead aprons. You should be fine but if you want to go into dental, I would consult a doctor and try the botox. Good Luck!!
  15. I love that when I take a family member back to the OR suite, I have put the family at ease that I will do my very best to take care of their loved one. I love that they believe in me. I love to tell everyone that I am a nurse. Even though I have only been doing this for about 8 months, I love the respect and team work of my team in the OR.
  16. We have had an outbreak in my LTC center. It is only considered Norwiegen in the immunocompromised whereas when a healthy adult becomes infected they would not progress to such a horrible stage (that being considered Norwiegan). The Elimite will treat those exposed but her family and house need to be given a good once over with treatment and cleaning (Everything laundered and the stuff that cant be laundered needs to be sealed in air tight bags to kill the scabies). PM if you want to or just google it. I can't imagine...I said that if I had the creepy crawlers then someone was going to have to put me in a padded room.
  17. You should get it in abut two weeks. The license itself is attached to a larger piece of paper. Congrats and welcome!
  18. I understand this victory. I am a new nurse and new to the OR. It is wonderful that my patients are asleep when I have to cath them but we are on a time restraint. Everyone in the room is waiting for me to get it done and get the patient prepped. I use to panic but now I am getting use to it. CONGRATS!
  19. We graduated last Sept. and my best friend from school sung, "Do I Make You Proud", by Taylor Hicks. Everytime I hear that sone I cry. It was perfect and her voice with the voice of the piano player(also a student) was PERFECT. Congratulations! If you have any questions, you could PM me about the NCLEX. I took it in Nov. and passed on 75 questions feeling very confident when I left it.

I am from GA and we get $3.00 per hr on call and then if we have to go in it is 1 1/2 times our pay. The biggest perk of this is that we have EVERY weekend off except for the one 24 hr day a month that we take call unlike other floors that have to work every other weekend. :-)
  21. I work with them on a daily basis being as I am a new OR Nurse. I love what I do but you have to be really strong and determined to get through the orientation process. It is really difficult due to that fact that as nurse you are not really taught this in school. As for becoming a tech, Congratulations! You will have a wonderful time and it is very exciting. Good Luck!!
  22. C=RN.....That was my belief through my A&P and some of my Med-Surg. We were a new nursing program and ended up passing 32 out of 33 first try on the NCLEX and the other one passed on the 2nd try. I would hate to be the patient of some of our A students. Absolutely no caring personaility! Good Luck!
  23. I graduated from nursing school in Sept. of last year and went straight into the OR. What a learning curve so far!! I was not taught that much in nursing school about the OR and have since learned a whole lot. We not only have the patient to take care of but we have equipment, surgeons, anesthesiologist, the different vendors and all of the supplies. After only being in there for about two months (only part time because of the off- campus orientation), I was asked to help with the IT part of the new intra-op computer charting. So, I am only in the OR 2 days a week and the orientation process has been long. After saying all of that, I am so blessed and happy to be able to have had the opportunity to go straight into surgical nursing from school.
  24. Kaplan classroom review course worked for me! (That sounds like the commercial "Hooked on Phonics worked for me"). My immediate study buddies and I had about 6-10 different review books but I believe that the way the classroom instructors taught us was by far the best way to go. I passed with 75 questions and knew that I had passed.
  25. Also being a new nurse, what they taught in school about the reality shock is true. I love this more than I could tell you but it is a learning curve. I am a new OR nurse and that is unheard of where I am from. None of the hospitals around hire straight from school to the OR without going through a specialized interop program, I am learning on the job. Everyday for weeks I would take a few moments everyday to be thankful of where I was and what opportunity I had been given. If you ever want to chat, PM me. Have fun!!
