The CCAM topic prompted me to start this thread. What has been the most interesting baby in your NICU? Examples being syndromes, anomalies, etc..... I'm sure that some of you with many years of experience have seen some interesting things.

In the DFW area most NP programs require a 3.0 and some programs will accept under a 3.0, but you will be on "probation". I wouldn't worry about getting into grad. school. You would have to really blow it in nursing school to not get into grad. sc...
Welcome sinurse, Happy to hear about your interest in NICU. Your background of SICU will be very helpful, but just keep in mind that the NICU will be a lot different. It will help that you have a lot of basic concepts down and I'm sure your skill l...

Christine, I'm sorry for the situation you're in. The way your preceptor is treating you is very unprofessional and uncalled for and it isn't fair to you. Please don't let your preceptor bring you down and make you have seconds thoughts about your ...

Hey Danigirl I don't mind helping you out either. I have experience in the NICU and am currently working PRN in the NICU and full time in Pediatric Neurology. PM me.
I think that some NICU call themselves level IV because they do hearts and have ECMO, but I am not sure if that is an official level. Most textbooks will describe NICU as level I, II, or III.
Why don't you do both??? It is not uncommon for nurses who work in Children's hospitals to work both PICU and NICU. There will be things that you see in the PICU that you won't encounter in the NICU and vice versa. When you graduate you would need...

We use Aquaphor on micro preemies. It's in the admission orders. We have used Tegaderm under POX sites, but it isn't a policy and so most babies don't have it, but there is a policy to change the site every 4 to 8 hours depending on the size of the ...

Sounds like a challenging situation to say the least. A few suggestions I have would be to maybe make up a questionaire for everyone to fill out with questions like: I wish my manager would.... If I could change one thing ...
Harris Methodist is a good hospital and if you work with kids then Cooks Childrens is a great hospital. There are a lot more hospitals in Ft. Worth and in the mid-cities. There are A LOT of hospitals in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. I think that there...

Well there aren't specific schools/programs related to NICU nursing. What you need to do is go to nursing school which can be done at a university or community college. If you are interested in the University of Florida then you need to check to se...
That's a tough situation. The first priority is going to be patient safety and if you are unable to see some color changes that could be a threat to safety. I guess the question is did you not see the blanching on the infant with the UAC because y...
I think that being a social worker in the NICU would be a great option. Maybe you could shadow a social worker to see exactly what their role is in the NICU. Just keep in mind that the social workers have no "hands on" with the babies. You also ma...

I agree with everyone else's post. I too have dealt with physicians that react the way yours did. It sometimes seems to depend on what mood he or she is in. If you hadn't notified him about the labs the doc probably would have come in the next day...
I don't want to start the PA vs. NP debate, but I do want to clear up some misconceptions. I support both PA's and NP's. There are advantages and disadvantages to both. Most PA's are actually women and not men. Yes, it does take a total of six y...
