  1. Patients need better anticoagulation therapy education

I always tell patients, "If you don't hear anything else I tell you about coumadin, just remember it is a very dangerous drug that requires close monitoring." Oh, and I came from an ADN program.
  2. Nurses and Burn out

I was the same way, and still am from time to time, but I have come to accept that I am only one person. I can only be in one place at one time, and when bad things happen it isn't necessarily my fault. I am not God and I do not have control over lif...
  3. First night working alone... NERVOUS!

P.S. It always helps me to read a devotional or something positive before work. I also pray. It helps me remember that I am not alone in this big bad world.
  4. First night working alone... NERVOUS!

Take a deep breath! You've got this, and if you weren't nervous you wouldn't be normal!!! Be sure to take breaks, and stay hydrated and eat snacks. No matter how bad a shift can get, it always comes to an end. :)
  5. How to stay safe fulfilling 2 week notice

Can you keep them from finding out where you are going? If so, just keep it mum and act like you are just taking some time off of working for awhile. What horrible, nasty people to screw with people like that.
  6. While you're at it...can you clean my poop too?

I love the patients who hoist themselves off of the toilet with exaggerated effort, and then grab ahold of the sink in front of them with their hind ends sticking out waiting for the staff to wipe it, as if no words are needed. "Short arm syndrome."...
  7. Family members make me nervous

I was not suggesting to give patients or their family members a "look." I was referencing doctors who rant and rave and try to intimidate nurses. I treat them professionally, and if they cannot do the same, then I look at them like THEY are the foo...
  8. Family members make me nervous

I trust people more who admit that they do not know everything, and are willing to "look into it" for me. And to those doctors who grill us and pounce on us when we say we don't know, I've perfected a "look" that I give them that works like a charm....
  9. mistake on heparin??

It sounds like the nurse who followed you dropped the ball. She should have taken the heparin drip as seriously as it sounds like you did. You reported off to her when the PTT was due, and she should have cared enough about her patient's health and...
  10. Why so nasty?

That kind of behavior is complete bull, and so unprofessional. She should be ashamed of herself! What a miserable, miserable individual. I wish I had advice for you, but I don't. Just smile and get through it, and get the heck out of there if pos...
  11. What can you tell me about Modesto, CA area?

I live near Modesto, and sent you a private message.
  12. LTC facility-TAKE DOWN THAT ARTWORK NOW!!!

I think the "State" needs to clean their own stinky house...they seem to be so good at dictating what the rest of us should and should not do!
  13. sick, worried...

I would stay home...If a hacking, sick nurse who looked miserable was taking care of my parent, I would not be too happy. I feel bad for you, and hope you feel better. You have had some legitimate issues for being out, so it is not like you are fla...
  14. CNA's on your floor?

Check lists do not seem to matter in my experience. If a person is lazy, has a poor work ethic, and generally does not give a rip, all of the checklists in the world are not going to make a difference. I feel your pain though! I cherish my good CN...
  15. Should I take bagels first day of work?

Sneak them in...no one will know who brought them! Lol.
  16. Supply shortages

Pillows...I am forever hunting down stinkin' pillows! Housekeeping treats them like they are golden nuggets, and I am beginning to think they are! It just drives me nuts not to have the stuff I need. NUTS!
  17. Can a shy student become an effective nurse?

I am a shy/quiet person, and have been a nurse for 3 years. We all have qualities that we can bring to the bedside to help people. You do too! Stick with it, and what helped me was working as a CNA while I went to school. I got a lot of exposure ...
  18. ER nurses are the best!

Rooty toot toot toot!!! Lol. I think there are excellent nurses in ALL specialties, and I most admire the humble ones who do their job without patting their own backs.
  19. I am an American.

  20. Adoption

My husband and I cannot have a baby of our own, and just want to add that your gift to some blessed couple is nothing short of awesome. Hugs to you.
  21. I use up all of my compassion at work.

You took the words right out of my mouth..."I just want everyone else to suck it up. Because I have to." Hugs to you. This is a unique profession isn't it? Some days I am so upset that I go and give complete strangers and their families my very be...
  22. Ever take care of a patient for a while to later find out...

Shouldn't the patient have been put on isolation precautions for ruling out MRSA in the sputum?
  23. Whatever "professionalism" is, it's driving me nuts.

you kind of sound like the rooster who thought the sun had risen to hear him crow. try to be humble and learn from those who are ahead of you in this profession.
  24. Basic Arrhythmia course

I am pretty sure the hospital that has hired you will offer the class. I work at a small hospital and they have one every few months. Congratulations on the job!
  25. adjusting to night shift

I think that is going to be tough on your body, and that kind of schedule is evil to require of an employee in my opinion. I worked nights for 3 years, and just flip flopping back to a day person on my days OFF made me witch on wheels. I have since...
