  1. Hi, I am about 5 months into working a busy medical floor. While I mostly work 3-11, I also work 2 shifts of 7a-7p and a 7p-7a (in a 2 week time period). I am finding myself not adjusting well to my day shifts, and around the time when those come u...
  2. poor report

I sympathize with time constraints but I also do not understand why a skin assessment (at the place where the alleged surgery took place) would take more than a minute or so. You don't have to assess every square inch, just the "surgical" site.
  3. poor report

Bedside reporting would actually solve all of that; you can do a quick assessment with the nurse who is handing off to you = no surprises.
  4. Silly joke

Man in a hospital bed with a Bipap mask on. Calls his nurse, and as best as she can make out, asks, "Are my testicles black?" She pulls back his gown, lifts up his scrotum, and gives it a thorough inspection. "Your testicles look fine, sir." He pul...
  5. question:flat foot any advice

I wear 10 1/2 (4E width!!!!) mens and have very flat feet as well. I've found Asics GT-2160 to be quite comfortable; they are a little pricey but well worth it. I don't have pain after an 8 hr shift but my feet will hurt a little after a 12.... ju...
  6. When "The Calling" wears off?

I think we nurses could all just do ourselves a favor and throw "the calling" thinking out the window. I mean, garbage men (people?) probably don't even consider if they are "called" to their job or not; they just wake up and do it and get it done. ...
  7. Troubles with eyeglasses

I wear progressives as well, and have had no problems with them. $700 seems exorbitant for glasses; do shop around and find out who sells what brands... I used to sell eyeglasses in my former life and the upcharge on lenses is beyond belief! You ha...
  8. "hungry headless chickens with full bladders"..... ahahahahahaha..... almost spit coffee on my keyboard.
  9. Can you prick a diabetic too hard?

"In some ways while my internship is making me more confident in other ways it's making me less confident. I just feel like I'm a slow learner, like I need to do things 3-4 times before it imprints in my brain and even then I'm slow for some things, ...
  10. Falling short

I got angry when I read your post. Not at you, Risa, but at the system....time and time again I read posts like yours...nurses who put heart and soul into their jobs, day in and day out, and still walk away feeling like they haven't done enough. I'...
  11. justashooter, you make a great point. Sometimes we tend to "over share" about things that scare people (esp. future employers) off. Keep it light!
  12. 8 hour days or 12 hours days?

I have a weird schedule in that it is a combination of 8's and 12's. It is true what some of the other posters say; it is much easier to get all the charting done on my 12's. But, you HAVE to be able to decompress quickly after a 12, if you are goi...
  13. Nurses-How to be a blessing as a CNA?

Beth, sounds like you already would be an asset to any employer. Just be yourself during your interview. People pick up on phoniness pretty quickly, so no need to be anything other than what you already are, especially if you know what you are and ...
  14. Does anyone have a GOOD manager

I also have a great manager. I'm pretty new on the floor and work weird shifts, but she always asks me how I'm doing, whenever she sees me, without fail. Just the simple act of checking in somehow makes a world of difference to me. I also have very...
  15. What are the top 5 medications YOU administer daily?

    Insulin, coumadin, metoprolol, omeprazole, hydrocodone.
  16. advice appreciated from nurses who work variable shifts

I want to thank each of you for taking the time to post your thoughts. The general consensus is what I know I need to do, just be a big girl and talk to my manager. I haven't done that yet because I'm just so happy to have a job, and as I said, I'm...
  17. Compassion or reality for obese patients?

Overeating is just another way people self-medicate; I don't think it's any different than using alcohol or drugs or sex, etc. If people could get to the "why" of what is driving them to abuse their bodies (death by fork), perhaps change could occur...
  18. Best places for new grad hires?

The first stickie under "First Year after Licensure" (click on Nurses tab above) might be helpful to the OP.
  19. Life is too short to dread what you do. If you are filled with dread at just the thought of a job, the job itself will only add to your stress, especially the first year. You will have to want to be there in order to be good at what you do. Sounds...
  20. New grad needs some honest advice

Colleen1978, glad you have sorted things out, and that you had an understanding OR manager who probably gave you some great advice. Sometimes I think anesthesia is really where it's at. :) At my hospital, the CRNAs seem to be the happiest, most i...
  21. New grad needs some honest advice

I'll give you my story: took a pediatric home health job after graduation (no hospital jobs available) where I had one fairly stable client all the time (no bouncing from home to home), started feeling like I was a bit "too comfortable", so after on...
  22. Merry Christmas to the nurses who will be working today

MBARNBSN ~ do you get New Years off? Hope so! Guess I'm just too old for 3 12's.....
  23. Merry Christmas to the nurses who will be working today

Just came off 3 straight 12 hr shifts....... never again, I hope.
  24. Lpn from FL to SD

Welcome, hope you find this site to be as helpful as I have over the years. :) A phone call to your BON (perhaps both in your case) should give you the answers you need. I have had success getting a real live human being when I called my BON with a...
  25. How do I walk back into a room

Awwwwwwwwwwwww............. hugs to you, newtress. There are no words.
