  1. I am 2 weeks off orientation in an SICU and I see tripling happening all of the time. We have a high turnover rate with nurses and the morale is horrible. I'm scared when the day comes that I'm assigned 3 patients. I don't think it's right. I've ...
  2. Changing from OR nurse to ICU

Hey Bronze, I did exactly that; I worked in an OR mainly circulating, scrubbing once in a while, for 3 1/2 yrs, but then took that big step to transition to the ICU. It is a HUGE change. I just finished 8 weeks of orientation and this past week has...
  3. New Grad OR nursing??

What an awesome opportunity! I have a glass is half full outlook in this situation. I don't believe you would be "wasting" time if you went into the OR. You need to have a positive attitude that will be noticed. You might be able to eventually tr...
  4. Hospital search in Florida

As a GN, I started out at $17.80/hr. This was a shock because that was what I made as an admin assistant in southeast VA in a much more lower stress job, but I wanted a job, so I took it! I worked for 3 yrs full time and usually got a 15 cent raise...
  5. OR nurse with a family.

It really depends where you work. I work in a city that only has two hospitals. One is a trauma center and the other is not. The trauma center has more shifts while the other one has most nurses on day shift and one nurse on the 2-10 pm shift. Ou...

  9. formalin in the Operating Room

We have a tissue room. It's basically a closet with specimen containers, lab slips, formalin, and a plastic bin to put specimens in. We don't keep any formalin in the suites or substeriles.

  15. Finally got an interview

Fantastic! You are a true go getter! Joining the AORN and networking was good on your part. Some ppl think they can just walk into a position on the OR and it isn't always that easy. Best of luck!!!
  16. Pregnancy and work hours

  17. Pregnancy and work hours

Just wondering if anyone's OR unit has specific guidelines for work hours for pregnant nurses. I am currently 28 weeks pregnant and work full-time in the OR. I am required to take mandatory late days, which lasts as long as they need you there (one...
  18. New to the operating room!

I took pictures of how the equipment was set up (ie: beach chair). Ask as many questions as you need to understand what's going on. Also, when the sched for the next day came out I would find out which room i was going to be in and make copies of t...
  19. A Day in the Life of an OR Charge Nurse

Wow, you sound like an amazing charge nurse! I can only imagine the level of stress you are under on a daily basis. I have kind of a neutral relationship w/ my chg nurse. Overall I think she's in a tough spot bc she can never make everyone happy. ...
  20. Pregnancy and work hours

Catman, I'm the OP for this thread. Let me just tell you that I worked up until I went into labor. Seriously, it was 0650 and I was getting ready to bring a patient back and I went into labor. I must admit that many of my coworkers were compassion...
  21. Pregnancy and work hours

That's a very interesting study! I'm the OP and went into labor at work at 37 wks and 6 days and my baby was 5lbs 9 oz. My first child was 7 lbs 7 oz. I know each pregnancy is different and each baby is unique, but I do find what you posted as int...
  22. OR newbie needs advice

Good grief, I can understand your frustration. It really doesn't matter if the Betadine is soaked in the cotton or you dip. It is hard to try to remember how each person does things & the OR can be a tough environment. A lot of nurses are used...
  23. Pregnancy and work hours

Wow, I am really touched by the more compassionate posts. I do have some great coworkers who are very understanding and helpful. I would never take advanatage or try to "milk" my situation. I've never asked my doctor for a note or to leave work ea...
