  1. Michigan process for endorsement....How long will the process be?

No, it didn't take two months for me. I sent my application for LPN endorsement when I was living in Virginia. I mailed it the 2nd or 3rd week of January, and I was granted my Michigan license on February 1st. Just an FYI, there is a huge delay in ge...
  2. Hey everyone. I'm currently a nursing student with about 1 year left, and just had a question about my license when I get it. I plan to get my license in the state of Virginia, and was wondering if anyone knows if VA has a compact with other states? ...
  3. What is your current LPN salary

$18.66/hour - grossed $39,500 in 2010. Northern Virginia 20 minutes from Washington D.C. I'm an ER LPN who manages the express care/fast track department with a patient load of 8.
  4. Do nurses learn how to read EKG's and do phlebotomy?

Virginia Hospital Center (in Arlington) I think we could use a few more ER Technicians....
  5. so I blush really bad...

I too have the same problem! I'm a pretty fair skinned guy... and at the slightest feeling of embarassment or anxiety I turn bright red almost purple... including my upper chest.. it makes me want to hide because I don't want patients to look at me a...
  6. lovenox

I've had to give 2 shots of Lovenox in my ER due to the patient's size (since Lovenox dosage is weight based) If I remember correctly the Lovenox we carry only goes up to 100mg in a single syringe
  7. IV forms of Zofran and Decadron given PO???

I was confused the first time I was asked to give IV Decadron as a PO med. Pharmacy told me that they do actually carry a Decadron oral suspension, but the alcohol concentration is too high to give to children, and that is why we use the IV form.
  8. I was recently told that we are no longer allowed to do this in our Emergency Room. The old practice was each morning, the nurse would add 2ml Sodium Bicarbonate to a 20ml vial of 1% Lidocaine, then draw up about 20 3cc syringes with the buffered lid...
  9. Nurses Pre-Mixing and Storing Lidocaine

Sorry.. The MDs/PAs/NPs use this for local anesthetic pre-suturing or I&D
  10. Nursing phrases

Gotta love my facility required "scripting" we do with every patient: (Before leaving room for whatever reason) "Is there anything else I can get for you? I have the time" (Of course I don't really have the time....) oh and, "I'm going to close your ...
  11. Coumadin + Cranberry Juice?

Hey everyone. I just got home from the nursing home where we are doing our clinicals, and I have a quick question. Reading through our pt's chart, I noticed that he is taking Coumadin. Our Instructor told us to research all the drugs our Pt's were on...
  12. What's going on???

Hey everyone, I'm a new LPN currently on orientation at a fairly busy ER outside of Wash. DC. I work in Express Care "aka the Fast Track" which is where the lower acuity patients are seen (lacs, sutures, ankle sprains, etc). I am tired of hearing how...
  13. Not trying to hijack this thread.... But what about some things students would like from their nurses? I just finished LPN school and earned my License, and looking back on clinicals I feel it could have been alot better. I know the Nurses are busy, ...
  14. Clinical Care Tech- Fairfax Hospital

Similar duties to a CNA I suppose. Depends on the floor really. On a Med/Surg floor, you could be doing more vitals and linen changes (for example) than you would do in an ER, where you would be doing more IV starts, blood draws, transporting patient...
  15. Hungry Nurse or Troublemaker?

If you are given a lunch period, you must be free from all duties. Even if you have partial duties (carrying a pager that you must respond to, or carrying a cordless phone you must answer) then you must be paid. This is US law.
  16. Has anyone gone to the Medical Careers Institute

I already replied to a similar thread... Read my post here: https://allnurses.com/general-nursing-discussion/anyone-going-medical-386438.html BEWARE!@!!!!
  17. Does my ER actually triage?

I just don't understand... is my ER actually "triaging" people.. or are we just taking their vitals and writing down their chief complaint? Everything at my ER is first come first served. doesnt make sense to me.. here's a scenario: Patient #1 arrive...
  18. Stethoscope cleaning

Not sure what kind of wipes your institution uses... But I used Cavi Wipes on my Littmann Stethoscope, and it made the tubing feel all sticky and disgusting after it dried. I washed it off with water and its fine, but just a heads up!
  19. Gay male nurses?

I'm gay and I think this is actually very hilarious!!
  20. is anyone going to Medical Careers Institute in Richmond VA??

Stay away from this school. Go directly for your RN. You will thank me later... I attended the Manassas campus. Took me a year and a half, and I got my LPN license first time around taking the NCLEX. I feel the school did not prepare me enough for th...
  21. Hello everyone, I just have a few comments/questions about Lidocaine. At my ER, we usually would draw up 1% Lidocaine, buffer it with bicarb, and label syringes and put them away in a locked cabinet for later use by the doctor's or PAs. Recently, we ...
  22. How does your facility handle Lidocaine?

This is actually the reason that our current practice was stopped. The lido is buffered with bicarb, then labeled with whats in it, the date, time, and initals. Then the syringes were stored away in the drawer. Its the PAs who use the lido at my faci...
  23. What would you have done?

So, I went to the Free Clinic in my area this evening to volunteer, as I have been doing the past 3 months. They are always short on Nurses and need them to do Triage and Screening for the patients. Well, I usually don't smoke when I'm there because ...
  24. What would you have done?

An old thread I hate to revive, but I just am now reading replies and people are very confused. Yes, I misused the word "triage". What I meant is, asking their chief complaint and taking vitals. That is it. No more, no less. And no, I didn't imply I ...
  25. which littman for the ER?

Not to make you scared or nervous.... but I currently am an ER nurse. Sometime it gets so busy and hectic, and so many different people going through there. It is EASY to lose your stethoscope, no matter how careful you are. Just think wisely before ...
