  1. Do CRNA schools care where you got your BSN?

I did excelsior for my asn, then Utica college (online) bsn, and I got into crna school without being asked specifically about them. Depending on which school you are applying, GRE, GRADES, EXPERIENCE are most important IMO
  2. I'm interviewing at North Shore University Manhasset for critical care fellowship. Everything seems to be great... nurse recruiter friendly and helpful, so is the floor where I interviewed. Anyone been thru the fellowship or heard anything about it...
  3. Excelsior Grads - Where are they now?

My EC update - paramedic 06/99, EC ASN 09/07, online BSN from another college 08/10, CRNA bound 06/11!
  4. Any other EMS professionals turned nurses having issues!

Some states have RN-Medics designated MICN's I believe... one of my medic turned RN friends does this and seems to like it
  5. Compatibilities of IV piggybacks

Whenever I call pharmacy, they log into the micromedex (I can hear them typing) and clicking on each drug I need to run as I tell them over the phone. Much easier to do it myself! I've also found it a good idea to print out the micromedex screen an...
  6. Rendering Aid

These situations can be difficult to handle properly, especially when another person is involved doing 'crowd control' as you mention. If the lady really seemed to need help (semi-conscious), then I would assist. An appropriate comment to the person ...
  7. Co-administration of Zyvox and albuterol?

Haven't had the chance to research it, but I've been told concommitant infusion of Zyvox and phenylephrine can cause uncontrolled hypertension...
  8. Flushing a central line

Referencing the manual can be tedious, and of course, is not hands-on. My suggestion would be to ask for clarification from the nurse educator on your floor or institution. If you've never been trained or inserviced with CVCs, it really isn't fair to...
  9. North Shore LIJ Critical Care Fellowship

during the interview process, they generally ask which hospital you prefer and/or what unit you are interested in. Be prepared to provide a quick (short) rationale for the unit you want.. did you extern in a similar unit? other nurse recommendation?
  10. Any Excelsior College grads now CRNA or SRNA?

I received my associate's in nursing through Excelsior College after 10 yrs as a paramedic. I'm curious to find others who've gone the Excelsior route and are now in the anesthesia field. Did you find EC to be an obstacle in the interview process, ...
  11. RN to BSN

check out Utica.edu I'll be graduating at end of summer semester, and would recommend this program... #325/credit... professors reasonable... easy to use online platform
  12. Can you get an RN degree online?

I do not believe there is a truly online route to obtain your initial ASN/BSN that would qualify you to sit for the NCLEX and become an RN. It is a common misconception that Excelsior College offers "online" nursing degrees. EC is actually a distanc...
  13. RN vs. EMS

Having been on both sides of the RN-EMS table, I can tell you that both professionals deserve the utmost respect. Regarding skill sets, EMT basics (entry level in NY State is EMT-D(efibrillation) generally perform head-to-toe assessments focused on...
  14. RN vs. EMS

Absolutely true.. there are alot of nice paragods out there :)
  15. Code blue at my LTC and AHA guideline

Sounds like you made a terrific effort :) I believe the spirit of the AHA guideline was to encourage people to take actions that would benefit a victim, and still be within their 'comfort' limits, in the absence of appropriate medical equipment. T...
  16. Health Care Bill

I wouldn't say 200k income is anywhere near 'rich' in many parts of the country... mortgage, taxes, daycare.. not even close! Unfortunately, a number of nurses and their families will fall into this too 'rich' catergory. To a multi-millionaire, and...
  17. Taking care of doctors....

I had a patient who was a retired anesthesiologist (didn't introduce himself as one). Post-surgery, he asked what side effects / complications he might experience. I went on about possibility of voice being hoarse b/c of the tube, potential blood p...
  18. Name the hospital and its Starting Salary!!!

How'd everything go with the interview??
  19. Name the hospital and its Starting Salary!!!

shift diff is $5200/yr for night staff. For day shifters (7a-7p), the hours from 3p-7p receive differential, so day shifters get an extra $1700/yr above base. For BSN, it gets added into your hourly rate.. approx $1200/yr or $0.60/hr Since you alre...
  20. Name the hospital and its Starting Salary!!!

Yes, it is true.. I believe starting at NSLIJ on Long Island is 32.75 for ASN.. little extra ~$1 for BSN. The two main hospitals are North Shore - Manhasset, and LIJ (actually located in Floral Park on the Queens/Nassau border) B
  21. Which online chemistry is best

  22. Any Excelsior College grads now CRNA or SRNA?

thanks nursekitten... just wanted to make sure there's at least one EC ADN grad out there! LOL
  23. Need Help writing change of shift letter

My unit has an informal method of requesting days. On any piece of paper (scrap, notepad) we write, "I would like to be considered for transfer to a daytime shift when a position becomes available. Signed...." The NM then looks at the paper, pulls o...
  24. Blanket warmers

our warmers for fresh open hearts have 3 settings... 43C, 39C, and 37C... we set at 43C and then turn off when the patient's temp reaches 36.5C. Haven't really researched the optimal temps though.. just anecdotal and our floor policy...
  25. Our hospital is going SMOKE FREE!

I'm assuming the campus police can only write up employees.. how do they handle patients and families who refuse to be compliant?
