  1. Best way to contact unsuccessful candidates after interview

Thanks for all your feedback. I ended up writing emails to all the unsuccessful candidates - personalized emails to the ones I'd interviewed, and generic emails to the 50+ who didn't receive an interview. I felt positive about my decision.
  2. I am a new supervisor (2 months in) and I am already going through my first hiring process, so I'm learning as I go! I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on the best way to contact unsuccessful applicants after an interview? I had originally plann...
  3. Best way to contact unsuccessful candidates after interview

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. I work at a moderately small centre (40 staff members) with no HR department, so most of these HR-type issues are up to me. I feel a lot better about the decision to email the unsuccessful applicants now - thank you...
  4. Can new grads start out as public health nurses?

hi futurdoc, i attended ubc school of nursing. for the last semester of school, ubc offers special "avenues" classes based on the students' interests - ie. public health, pediatrics, maternity, acute care, etc. i chose to take my avenues course in p...
  5. To Swab or Not to Swab......

Yes, this. It is our health authority's policy to swab, and I think it makes sense because a) the tops of the vials aren't guaranteed to be sterile, and b) even if the tops were sterile, they could become contaminated as the cover is flipped off. Why...
  6. Where are you from?

I received my BSN from UBC Nursing, and currently live in Vancouver, BC. I'm hoping to move to a smaller town on Vancouver Island when the right nursing opportunity comes up!
  7. Hi twalt, I'm not sure if you were asking me or someone else, but I am a registered nurse who did extra education in public health. I specialize in 0-5 year olds and their families, and sometimes it does feel like I'm more of a counselor/social worke...
  8. Have you thought about public health nursing? I am unable to stand for any period of time due to a chronic leg injury. For me, public health is a great career for me because sometimes I am sitting at my computer for charting, sometimes I am driving t...
  9. Jobs for new graduate in BC (e.g. Victoria, Nelson)?

The job market for new grads in BC is not very good right now, to be honest. Most new grads seem to get hired into positions on the unit that they did their final preceptorship in. But you never know - you could get lucky! I'd suggest talking to a re...
  10. How much free time do you have in UBC's Nursing?

It really depends on how much time you want/need to devote to studying and how good you are at managing your time! It probably wouldn't be a problem to have one weekly volunteer job. It's important to remember that clinical placements could be either...
  11. Can new grads start out as public health nurses?

Hi jasn, Congrats on heading into your final practicum! I had a fantastic experience with my preceptorship in public health. I was lucky, because my two preceptors were very willing to provide learning opportunities for me. I found that there was a ...
  12. Can new grads start out as public health nurses?

It probably depends on the health authority's policies, but it is possible! I did my final preceptorship in a public health unit and then got hired on as a new grad. They originally told me that they don't hire new grads, but I took additional course...

  17. CRNE June 2009

With every day that goes by, I get more and more nervous, and more and more convinced that I failed! AAAH! Good luck to all the June 2009 writers, and may the mailing system get the results to us quickly! :)
  18. BC Nursing Institutes...Is it wise to be picky?

I just started in UBC Nursing this year after doing 3 years of Sciences at UBC. You're right - it is really tough to get in... even getting a high GPA doesn't guarantee anything. But as much as I love UBC, I wish I would've gone to a college like Dou...
