  1. Nurse Coding

I have my certification in coding as well, I think it was an asset to me personally but as far as financially....no. Most hospitals don't hire RNs to code...they hire certified coders which they can pay WAY LESS than nurses. At least in Louisiana.
  2. Trying to decide on a specialty

There are so many choices, it's such a personal decision. Not every specialty is right for everyone. I started out in critical care/trauma...and ended up in Pediatrics. Sometimes, you have to just try them out and see how you like it. I noticed over ...
  3. ER- HELP: Dumbest reason people go to ER

Ohhhhhh and the ones that come in for "FEVER" and we ask what the temp has been running..."I don't know, I don't have a thermometer but by hand, it's high" and one of my favorites when I asked that question, the lady was all in a panic and said "Oh m...
  4. ER- HELP: Dumbest reason people go to ER

I had a parent call an ambulance 12 TIMES, YES, 12 TIMES in one month and had her child brought to the hospital for a "cold"..... that was the most ridiculous thing ever. Medicaid abuse.
  5. Scared Silly! Help!!

You can do it! And if it makes ya feel a little better, there is a school here in Louisiana that not only makes students wear the traditional white but they DO have to wear the white nurses cap too!!!!!! Oh yeah! They DO! lol

  7. Carrying Equipment Outside of Work

Each state is different, you can check out the statutes here...for instance, you have to be a trained responder in Mississippi. http://www.momsteam.com/alpha/features/cardiac_awareness_center/good_samaritan_laws.shtml
  8. Do regular "newborn nurseries" still exist?

They still exist here in Louisiana! Absolutely, I have always encouraged the mom to send the baby to the nursery so she can get some rest when she needs it! And I have seen too many accidents happen because the baby "rooms in" when the mother is cl...
  9. Carrying Equipment Outside of Work

I carry it all, you never know when you might need it. I have stopped numerous times when nobody was on the scene yet. Most people do not know that under the Good Samaritan laws in most states you are not immune from being sued unless you are CPR/A...
  10. I have worked numerous shelters during hurricanes in South Louisiana and I haven't seen any of this either...however...during Katrina, I did have a few "unruly" people spit on me but I think it was more of a "mental condition" thing considering what ...
  11. Cat Scratch Fever!

Like I said, it can lie dormant and go undetected until bloodwork is done....I don't believe it was "caused" by that fall...I believe it was detected as a result of that happening. I had a patient who was in a car accident (7 years old) and it was d...
  12. Cat Scratch Fever!

Umm..I would like to know what other causes there are out there for cat scratch fever?? It is a known fact that it is a flea borne bacteria and mainly infects cats, although it is "possible" to be transmitted through dirt maybe ridden with fleas and...
  13. husband begrudgingly supportive

Oh wow. I would dump him. But that's just me! haha..ok all kidding aside, it will be a long road trying to go through this program and living with someone who is so negative because it is stressful enough. Never ever think that you can't do some...
  14. Ever called CPS?

Unfortunately being in Peds I have dealt with CPS so many times, I couldn't tell you how many!! It is absolutely ridiculous what some of these children endure. Heartbreaking. It certainly takes a toll on you personally and I am very protective of ...
  15. I can't stand needles, help!!

You get used to it, you will be able to do it in your sleep! I don't like needles coming at me either and I don't particularly "like" that part of nursing (especially in Peds) but it's a part of it. The first few babies I did, I cried right along wi...
  16. Cat Scratch Fever!

Cat scratch fever is actually more common than you think...I have seen quite a few in peds. It is caused by a bacteria called Bartonella that cats carry in their blood. Fleas pass the bacteria from cat to cat. Infected humans usually have fatigue,...
  17. But what I REALLY wanna say is don't quit!!! LOL
  18. I agree, I would try to stick it out a few more weeks and see if it gets better for you. I was an EMT going into nursing school so I was trained and had pretty much seen it all. I think everyone is nervous in clinicals. Try to relax and just take ...
  19. Most Women Can Relate to this One. It Has Happened to Most of Us

  22. New Grad Question

I totally agree..your nursing texts are some of the best info you will get. I am a peds nurse but didn't move into NICU/PICU until I was 5 years established in regular peds. The American Nurses Association has a book out called "Neonatal Nursing: S...
  23. Embarassing OR experience.

He's a jerk...pfffttttt...I once had a doctor do that to a few of us trying to be a smartazz...saying to another doctor and patient..."they're JUST nurses"....well this "just a nurse" does a whole hell of a lot for you don't she? It infuriated me......

  25. "Nurse" on Ellen Gegneres today?!!

I just love her...she is hilarious...I was not offended and consider myself to "stand up for myself" when warranted.
