  1. Nurses with a disability

I work in a wheelchair. You can definitely work with a disability, it just takes a lot more planning and thinking ahead and out of the box. I actually worked on the floor as a rehab nurse in a skilled nursing facility until last year.
  2. Does nursing really suck that badly?

Here. This will tell you all you need to know about nursing. #WHATSHOULDWECALLNURSING
  3. Does nursing really suck that badly?

When the neighbor girls ask me about being a nurse, I tell them to go to the hospital and watch 3 fifty-year-old nurses walk down the hall, then come back and tell me if that's what they really want. By the way, whenever I read those happiness-in-the...
  4. $5 cake

So, my son has been after me to write more of my nursing adventures, and I thought I'd start with a captive audience! At one time I worked for the VA, on the pulmonary ward. I loved those guys. I looked out for them and they looked out for me. We ha...
  5. Should I hold out for a hospital job?

You can learn tons of good nursing skills in a doctor's office :) And any job is better than no job. You might have an easier time getting a hospital job with some experience under your belt. That's just my opinion, though.
  6. No opinions please just facts

Ninety percent or more of random drug screens are urine tests. They don't actually test for pot, they test for pot metabolites. Marijuana metabolites can remain in the urine for two or three weeks after consumption. According to an article Smoking 'l...
  7. Tactful education; Obesity

I just wanted to add a couple of things, as a pretty chunky gal myself (thank you, steroids). A person doesn't have to starve and doesn't have to cut how much they eat as much as what they eat. For instance, changing from potatoes and bread to cel...
  8. My first...my second MRI

So, I have the fortune (good or bad) to be a long-time patient, as well as a nurse. I went for my first MRI last week. Hey, guess what, I had no idea, but apparently I am a little claustrophobic. It was bad but I was doing OK by concentrating on t...
  9. How many pairs of scrubs should I purchase initially?

I always kept a set of scrubs in the trunk of my car, and one in my locker, if you have a locker. Sometimes, bad stuff happens :)
  10. My first...my second MRI

Well, the first time the tech put me in head first. The second time the tech put me in feet first. That made a huge difference, because I have no logic in my brain to tell me it is exactly the same. Also, I put a washrag over my eyes, and laid on ...
  11. My first...my second MRI

Nah, haha, you should just get it done. I know people tell horror stories about it, but as a long-term patient, for me, it was a piece of cake, by far one of the easiest procedures I've had this year. I will say, about 2/3 of the way through the Go...
  12. My first...my second MRI

I got Ben and Jerry's Cherry Garcia; it was great! Lol, glad go know I'm not the only loopy one. After my colonoscopy, the part that bugged me the most was that I had my glasses on when I woke up. You all know how impossible it is to put people's g...
  13. New nurse

I have noticed that sometimes new nurses, especially those who are from more affluent situations with big long degrees, forget that every person on your ward is part of your healthcare team and deserves respectful, egalitarian treatment. Not just th...
  14. Female cathing

The first lady I cathed in school had many fistulas. I took my best guess and put a catheter in one place and it came out another. I just stood there, petrified with dismay, sure that I had committed some horrible misdeed that had ruined my patient...
  15. I used to be a doctor-cusser Then I started a job as the Clinical Documentation PITA, hehe. I see doctors charting sometimes from 4 am to 11pm. I really had NO IDEA how much crappy paperwork they have to do. And you are right about the insurance ...
  16. What Baffles You?

Speaking of "the other nurse," one of my favorites is when I go into a patient's room and do something, leave the room, and come back later; and the patient says, "I'm so glad you are here. You are so nice. That other nurse (me) was so bad/mean/la...
  17. I've got a promotion!

Well, before I even finished my probation period I got promoted. Just think, I nearly did not go job hunting because I thought nobody would hire me because of my wheelchair. I just can't tell you how thrilled I was to be offered this wonderful job ...
  18. I've got a promotion!

Thanks for all the good words! Yes, I just had a big wound meeting with some folks and showed them the difference between the nursing and physician documentation. They were pretty staggered! Some of the things that go on are pretty shocking. For i...
  19. I have to laugh--you made me think of a certain resident from Chicago who came to our small, rural hospital. Now, I am the hillbilliest of Ozark hillbillies. Just like Jeff Foxworthy, every time I open my mouth in a room full of people I can see ...
  20. Every person is different, of course; I actually found elementary school nursing to be one of the most stressful jobs I ever held.
  21. Here's my favorite race-related story this week: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/08/23/booming/starting-out-us-against-the-world-but-still-together.html?pagewanted=1&_r=0
  22. Passion for Nursing but have disfigured fingers

I'll necro this thread to remark: one place I worked it was only possible to get super-large sterile gloves. It is possible to pull the extra length of the fingers up towards the base of your fingers to get it out of the way. You might like to pra...
  23. Unusual Names for Medical Diagnoses

Green fever or spring fever--anemia, which was often worse at the tail end of winter and the beginning of spring due to lack of meat or other sources of iron, often treated by drinking sassafras tea Bad blood: some kind of STD--I wasn't supposed to ...
  24. Best Cities for Nurse Practitioners

According to this Puerto Rico Salary and Wages the average RN salary is $33,790 in that area of Puerto Rico, so I find the NP salary dubious :) That link won't work for me, though, dunno why.
  25. Office setup

Welp, my dream has come true. I got a job where I can mostly work from home :) But I need to set up an office space! Right now I have a two-tier computer desk with an recliner, which I have to slide back and forth on the floor when I want to get i...
