  1. anyone seen a pH this low?

Hi just wondering if anyone here has seen someone with this low of a venous pH and still be alive? Venous pH 6.662 and HCO3 2.6!! I felt like I was chansing my tail trying to stop the downward trend, was able to get the pt up to the unit, but don't...
  2. Question on iv fluids

I would think to keep it in normal range, because the fluids could cause it to get low from cellular shifts without it. 125cc/hr is a pretty good amount of fluid that is 3,000 ml in 24hrs. Just a guess.
  3. I'm sorry you had a bad day, but you had another nurse with you and everything turned out fine. It is frusterating being new, and not knowing, but it gets better with time and experiance. Right now think about being a sponge and soaking up everythi...

  6. What else is there to do??

you could take a phlebotomy course, or like you said OR tech classes, you could take EMT classes, or MA classes. My sister in law is taking MA courses until she can get into the program she wants, and is learning a ton in a pretty short period of ti...

  8. What type of a nurse are you?

I consider myself a type A personality in most things, however do try and keep things fun and light. I usually laugh, joke and giggle when the time is appropiate. I consider myself a team player and resource to others when trying to solve a problem...
  9. Nursing Responsibilities

It is everyones responsibility, you can't ask someone else to do it if you won't. It can be delegated if you are too busy, but if you are not busy, you can empty it just as well as the aid/orderly.

  12. Nurse with bipolar disorder or adhd?

I am not dx with anything but often say "this isn't good for my ADD" (25% joking and 75% really feeling like I have some sort of ADD). One day I said it and a doctor told me that something like 90% of ER nurses have ADD/ADHD. And I have to say I thi...
  13. RN to Paramedic Bridge Course

The director and all of the instructors do an awsome job. I posted in this thread a long time ago before I took the class trying to get some information, but it has gone so far off the question and become somewhat of a spitting match. I just would ...

First off trying to be as unbias as possible, but I am an adrenaline junkie and ER is my love, but I can tell you what my days were like on a med/surg floor vs what they are like in the ER. And not saying any one is better than the other, we all nee...

  17. Dealing with the death of a patient...for the first time

I have found that every death and every family is different in their own way. There is no one way that I have found to approch the situation. I have learned that it is ok to get emotional and even shed some tears if need be, because we do get attac...
  18. Pneumonia...Sepsis... how are the two related?

A r/o diagnosis is usually something that you don't get instant answers for, like sepsis. To find the bacterial infection in the blood, blood cultures are done, and usually they grow for 72 hours before you get an answer, which does leave the questi...
  19. is nursing shortage really exists?????

I know the hospital I work in is short alot of the time, we can't send our pt's upstairs from ER not because there isn't a bed but because there isn't enough staff to take care of a full floor. There is a hiring freeze, my guess is the economy. A b...

  22. Have your feelings about the human body changed?

I agree with the greater appreciation for the human body and when they are healthy. I must say, nakedness has become a normal thing, not something that I really get embaressed about like when I was a new nurse. It is usually much more difficult for...

Don't give up Tiki, there are spots in hospitals, some ER's use EMT- B, and some paramedics. Those spots are sometimes harder to get. You would see alot in an ER, however on the road you would see just as much and do a ton. Working on the road isn...
