  1. New Grad Jobs in Oregon???

There are some new grad jobs in beautiful Southern Oregon. Check the Asante website. The main hospital is Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford.
  2. Return to work early after surgery

I recently had my BLS set to expire when I was FMLA. I was not allowed to take the class through work so I did the online course and got a skills check. The gal who did my skills check made allowances for my surgery. Do not go off FMLA before it's...
  3. So grateful to have a job but I'm hating it =(

I felt the same way and that was 20 years ago! Something that helped me was Patricia Benner's book From Novice to Expert. It helped me to understand where I was in my skills and give me a practical goal to work toward. Good luck and hang on!
  4. Latex and powder free gloves...

You can also get Botox treatments for overly sweaty hands. I think that since this is greatly affecting your work, you could make a case for insurance payment.
  5. when did they stop wearing those cute nurses caps?

I would guess about the time that men started to become nurses.
  6. Stupid Nurse Trick... Don't try this at home... or work!

I had a patient that was dying in the ICU. It was an expected death and his family was around him. We were full and the ED wanted to send me a patient as soon as the bed was free. After the 3rd call, they got an earful about asking if my patient w...
  7. In honor of a wonderful post today here is my story: Dear Fellow Nurse: Today I saw you in the cafeteria: I recognized you in a vague sort of way. But you sure recognized me! You yelled my name and came racing over with a big hug. I realized that ...
  8. Advice regarding termination

I live in Oregon. When I am called about a previous employee the only thing we are allowed to say is if they would be a candidate for rehire or not. The only explanation of a "no rehire" has to come from the former employee.
  9. Are you kidding?

I would guess that they meant 2-3 years.
  10. Do you personally know someone who has lost his/her license?

I worked with a nurse that was diverting/stealing drugs for her addict husband. The BON was not quite sure what to do with her since she herself was not addicted. She eventually lost her license. I also knew a physician that had addiction issues....
  11. How many pair of scrubs do you own?

I have about 20 sets right now only because I went to a scrub store that was going out of business and got tons of great things for $5 each. For just starting out, I would advise 2 weeks worth.
  12. The legalities of having a relative on your unit of employment?

My uncle was in my ICU for 45 days. I never set foot in his room as staff and left the room while report was being given. I never wanted my uncle to be uncomfortable with the the thought that I was privy to information that he may not want to share...
  13. i would have a concern if the other patients in the unit hear you addressing her as doctor that they may ask for medical advice and she may give it. if this is not the case, i would have no problem.
  14. What is the schedule "Short Hour"?

In my area, short hours means that you are scheduled less than part time hours and are not eligible for benefits. This is to distinguish from on call where the hospital is not required to schedule for any hours.
  15. My Daughter Has H1N1

My hospital is requiring us to stay home for flu like symptoms. If you call in for flu or are caring for a child with flu, it does NOT count as an toward the attendance policy. I'm sure there are some who will abuse this, but I think it's really sm...
  16. How much walking do you have to do every day?

I work in peri-op and walk 10-12 miles in a 12 hr day.
  17. Son wants to be a CRNA, but wants his ears guaged

I live in Southern Oregon. Not a chance would someone be hired with large guages (or visible tatoos). As a CRNA your son will already be trying to bang his way into a profession where he is not really wanted by most (not all) of the anesthesiologis...
  18. Best brand for scrubs/uniforms?

My favorite is Dickies Black Label. They are soft like peach-skin and durable.
  19. can the family reverse a patient's decision?

it doesn't matter if the "family member" can win, they can still sue and cost the doctor thousands in time and money.
  20. PBDS Assessment

I used to administer these tests. The best advice I can give you is to be what you would consider ridiculously detailed. You can't just say "give dextrose" or whatever, you have to say "after doing a 2 patient identifier and checking the 5 rights, ...
  21. poor prognosis/family in denial

this is one of the most difficult aspects of critical care. after years of trying different things, i finally found a "speech" that workes pretty well. when a family is facing a decision such as removal of life support or to trach/peg i say: "you ...
  22. How would a nurse mgr view this situation in interview?

i second the advice to not mention it in an interview but after you are offered and before you accept. i will tell you, however, that it may all be moot. if this is a union hospital they will go by the contract. i am pretty union neutral, but i th...
  23. What's the most and least stressful field of nursing?

I would say that is very subjective. I worked ICU for 15 yrs and many people would categorize that as one of the more stressfull areas. I loved it, though and thrived there. My personal "most stressful" would be mental health, an area that some m...
  24. Nurses in my Family, but None Are Helping Me

i love being a nurse but i have to admit that i get enough of being a nurse at work---i really don't want to talk about it at home. it's also difficult to talk to someone about being a nurse that isn't a nurse. you just don't have the vocab yet to ...
  25. Surgery patients brought in too soon before their surgery

We don't do that to people. If their surgery is 1200 or later, they can have clear liquids till 0600. It has really helped.
