    IV start gone bad

Vasovagal response. Not as uncommon as I'd like... Our Nurse Manager wants us to do all our IV starts with the patient lying down...because of that very thing. Wikipedia's explanation of vasovagal isn't bad.

    Post Operative Assessments

Two biggies (of course you do the ABC's first) in post op are pain and nausea. You have be be mindful of LOC, and VS's, but once you've gotten your patient stabilized...be looking for pain and nausea. Pain caught before it's bad is easier to handl...
  3. Nursing school is very hard. It will, all on it's own, cause anxiety. So will nursing. You have patient's lives in your hands. Having said that...I wouldn't have made it through nursing school without antidepressants, a very good friend, and a ver...

Please Help - OB/GYN Nursing Questions

In larger hopsitals there are often 'mother/baby' units (postpartum) as well as antepartum, labor and delivery, and NICU. In a smaller hospital you are often expected to do it all.

    Unique Nursing Jobs

Forensic nursing? or how about Surgeons First Assistant. Haven't been either one, but I think they are a little less known.

    Supportive Significant Other!!

I'm with Tweety. Doesn't matter if she's your daughter or your sister, you're a package deal. It doesn't sound like he treats you all that well, and school is hard enough without someone dragging you down, let alone worrying about your sister. Yo...
  7. Recently I received my state board of nursing's little magazine. In it there was a small article stating that all licensed nursing personnel were REQUIRED to give the board of nursing their employers name, address and phone number, and had only 30 d...

Patients We All Know and Love

Somewhere in there between Pampered Princess and Drama Queen...Somebody's Baby. She's young, has several tattoos, a nose ring and a belly ring. She cries when the blood pressure cuff inflates, and jerks her arm away with a scream when you try to st...

So does a drug test mean employment???

I would have thought the drug test was the clincher. If it's been past her five days...if I were her I would call them. Say something like...just wanted to let you know I'm still really interested in the position...but goodness, it's been enough ti...
  10. Not sure this is really what you're asking but BCBS of Alabama pre-authorized my breast MRI (BAAAD family hx of breast cx) and then when the MRI showed no cancer first denied it as a pre-existing condition, then when it was pointed out there was no c...
  11. I worked at one of those small surgical centers, as the night nurse. Usually I had one patient overnight, at the most two. I was usually the only RN there, but there was always someone else there trained in CPR. They slept in the next room and wer...

    Worried about new job

LOL, posted once and it disappeared into cyberspace, let's see if I have better luck with this one... Update: I found out a little more about call. What it boils down (with the hiring of two new RN's, one of whom is me) to in the end is doing weekda...

    Worried about new job

I recently accepted a case manager position in hospice. I've been on a few calls so far, including a death call, and the work itself i think I would love, and certainly don't see any difficulties in handling the load. Here's what bothers me though.....

Get to OR as nurse or PA?

My two cents. I have worked at a stand alone surgical facility. There, we didn't use scrub techs, for the most part. Mostly our RN's both circulated and scrubbed. (and this isn't in the distant past, BTW, I've only been gone one week) A couple of...
  15. I just accepted a job as a case manager in Hospice. I've worked L&D and PACU, more of the latter than the former, and have two years experience. Hospice is something I was excited about in school, then I kind of got caught up in the 'work in a h...

    Fever vs. Warm Blanket

I'm not trauma, so maybe you know something I don't. I wouldn't give a warm blanket to someone with a fever. I guess I'd assume that would merely increase body temp, and that wouldn't be good. What would the rationale on that be? I'm not being sarcas...

how can you be absolutely sure of things?

Oh, and there aren't a lot of absolutes. Even dead isn't necessarily absolute. So being absolutely sure isn't usual, or even necessary. You just do the very best you can. As accurately as you can. But don't worry about absolute. I'm not even ab...

how can you be absolutely sure of things?

The only thing you can chart is what YOU see. Did you see capillary refill happen? If you didn't you didn't, if you did you did. I'm not sure what 'adequate' would be. So on the strength issue, is there a measure you can use? equal bilaterally? ...

    More than two weeks

I've received a job offer, and am going to accept. I know, however, that the place I'm at is going to fuss. Do I owe them any more than two weeks? When I moved from nights to days, they informed me I had to give them a month to find a replacement....

    Eclipes Blackout Curtians

I got curtains online from JC Penny's that worked great. The ones I got from Bed Bath and Beyond (yes, Eclipse, I just checked) did NOT block all the light. The ones from Pennys do, except for a rim of light at the top where the curtain rod is. I ...
