  1. NIGHT SHIFT CENTRAL!

Pros: great teamwork (so few people you have to work together), no bosses, no family (unless pt is dying or major health issue), Cons: waking docs in the middle of the night, disregard for sleep time of night staff (meetings scheduled during sleep ...
  2. Occurence reporting to punish other nurses

I agree with chevyv, I would rather fix the mistake. Granted after fixing it I will talk with the nurse involved and tell what I had found. If the mistake is repeated and by the same nurse yeah then it is written up. I figure she at least had fai...
  3. Omnicare (new thread)

This was two years ago, it was Vitamin K injectable. Not in our contingency, for whatever reason. Thank goodness it is now.
  4. Omnicare (new thread)

Omnicare in my area is terrible. We don't have drugs we need in contingency. Our refill time is terrible, sometimes it takes two days for refill. STAT orders have to be picked up by one of their couriers from a pharmacy in town and brought to our fa...
  5. Day 5 of orientation, want to quit

Make yourself a little cheat sheet for the med pass. Does the resident take the meds whole, crushed, or one at a time? In pudding, applesauce, ice cream etc. Do they get special house supplements? Do they have medications kept in another place on...
  6. It's sort of a bummer with some of these aids

When I give the CNAs the vitals list I will usually tell them what time they are to be completed by. If they are really busy I will get some of the vitals. If the vitals are not done by the time specified I hound them till they do. I work 2230 -06...
  7. Breathe, just breathe. Eventually it will become easier and less stressful. I think anxiety with charge nurse responsiblities is fairly normal.
  8. DNR Grey Areas

You did just fine. You advocated for your patient and and dealt with that resident in a professional manner. It is hard to remain calm and cool when some jack wagon is in your face.
  9. You know it's gonna be a bad day at the home when

You know it is going to be a bad day at the home when: You pull into the parking lot for work and there is an ambulance and fire truck at the front door of the home.
  10. Another Rant About Rudeness/Bullying/Eating

To kgh31386 , Could I have the number for the wahmbulance? I work with a couple of people I need to call it for.
  11. Please someone help me understand..........

It sounds like more education is needed in regards to the role of Hospice in a facility. Those poor patients.
  12. Rn hurt by cold behavior

So sorry about your mom. How awful that your place could not be a bit more understanding due to the circumstances. My prayers and thoughts are with you.
  13. ER Abuse

I have been on the sending side myself in a nursing home. After hours you get an oncall that doesn't want to deal with a sick patient. "I don't know them so send him in "I have heard this alot and believe me sending someone to the ER is not my favo...
  14. write-up for insubordination because I turned my back to cry...

I also agree with the others. Quit. If they treat new hires like this how bad will it be once you are off probation?
  15. I would haul my butt in and try to work. Then if you still feel bad later, you can ask to go home, but at least they see that you made an attempt.
  16. I am sorry for your loss. There is no timeline for grief. Everyone goes through it at their own pace. Does your place of work have an EAP? If so I would take advantage of it. Just being able to talk things over with someone can help.
  17. Taking pain medications while working?

No, No, No!! Don't go in on that medication. My question to you is could you live with yourself if something happened to one of your patients while you were under the influence of that drug at work?
  18. Night shift, CNAs and homework

Where I work there are 5 of the 10 CNAs who regularly work night shift that are going on to school. These CNAs bring their homework on a regular basis to do during work hours when things are slow or on break. If they are fortunate enough to have dow...
  19. Things you "should" be taught in nursing school

Thank you Ruby Vee for that great list! All the other suggestions were great too. May I add one more? How to supervise others. This along with conflict resloution as suggested before seem to be big problems with new grads where I work.
  20. bad nursing care rant

What you and your friend found in the room is not acceptable. If it bothers you so much by all means report it. Personally I would monitor and just see if this was a one time incident due to emergency on the unit or ?? If it would happen again I w...
  21. Denial

Its sad how often I see this happen to patients. Love can make people do odd things sometimes.
  22. Lunch breaks

Where I work if you are the only RN you cannot leave the building. You punch out and leave the floor but remain available in case an emergency occurs.
  23. Suspended without notice

    Best of Luck!!
  24. LTC Emergencies - Not prepared!

Where I work we do a code in the case of a witnessed arrest only. If we do not witness their taking the last breath we don't do CPR. The sheet the resident signs at time of admission also states this. Usually if they are full code and circling the...
  25. New Grad in LTC - Feeling Overwhelmed (21 pts)

Yep, thats LTC . Being organized is the key.
