  1. Orientation attire?

well, monday is the general orientation for my first job as an rn (woo-hoo!) i have read all the paperwork and asked hr and cannot figure out what i am supposed to wear. the exact response from hr, "you can dress comfortable. you will sit all day." ...
  2. Question regarding Accelrated Nurse Programs

I graduated in august from an accelerated BSN program for 2nd degree students. Passed NCLEX earlier this month first try, and start my 1st RN job Monday (woot!) I don't think it is a matter of learning more or less in an accelerated program versus tr...
  3. Just wondering if anyone else has career related tattoo's

Here is a pic of the butterfly/Caduceus tattoo that I found on the internet and have thought about having something similar done. nurse butterfly tat.doc
  4. Help! Where should I do my preceptorship?

I'd say go with your specialty if that is what you want (OB). That is what a residency is for - to get you experience and let you figure out what you really want. If you get into OB and find that you don't like it, you can start out in Med/Surg as a ...
  5. Honor Societies

I got that same letter from Sigma Theta Tau and ignored it. When I graduated a few weeks ago, the pinning ceremony program had my name with an asterik beside it that said "Sigma Theta Tau Member". So, I guess even without my money my grades spoke for...
  6. Seniors Head to Mexico For Treatment

I have family who lives in close to Brownsville Texas, just minutes from the border and literally everyone who lives down there goes into Mexico for their dental work and prescription meds (yep, you can get almost anything OTC without a script). Thes...
  7. 2nd degree BSN students?

The only thing you miss out on with an accelerated program is a life! The educational experience is the same (you are required to have the same # of clinical hours as everyone else), it is just more intense. I just graduated from a 15 month accelerat...
  8. Night shift

Oh believe me, I've read them all - just looking for new tricks.
  9. Night shift

Do you swap back to a day schedule after your 3 shifts, and if so how? Thanks - loving the tips as I will be starting nights in October!
  10. Scratch paper?

I am taking the NCLEX-RN on Sept. 10 and was wondering if you are allowed to have scratch paper for the calculations. I heard they have calculators, but I use the dimensional analysis method to set up which is pretty impossible to do in my head unle...
  11. Scratch paper?

Thanks! I am taking it in Texas, I hope it is the same way. I might call Monday to check. Starting to get nervous and excited all at once!!!
  12. Bad first day of clinicals

I agree with everyone that the CNA sounds awful, but the shaving cream is a trick I learned in clinicals in the ICU. Believe it or not, it really softens the skin and smells great! It rinses easily also, whereas soap is hard to get off in a bed bath ...
  13. I've seen really cool, gross wounds, blisters the size of my fist, all kinds of things that should turn someone's stomach - all of which I could handle fine. The one thing that made me gag was a total care lady with a RAGING yeast infection. Looked l...
  14. Just wondering if anyone else has career related tattoo's

I have toyed with the idea but not found one that I like enough. I did see one really cool picture on the net of a caduceus used as the body of a butterfly. Kinda subtle but still medical. I have thought about getting a small heart on my wrist, where...
  15. BSN program not requiring Chemistry as Pre-req

TCU in Fort Worth does not require chemistry. It is private, so it does not have the same requirements as the state schools. You might check into some of the private schools near you. More $$, but less chemistry!
  16. Guess the mispronounced medical term

I had a patient tell me his last hospitalization was for "sore hoses" - that one took me a while... he meant cirrhosis!
  17. What does your login nickname mean to you?

I am from Louisiana, where the symbol of Cajun French culture is the fleur-de-lis. I also have one tattoo'd on my ankle :wink2: It is starting to be a popular symbol in decor and jewelry/clothing right now, which kinda ticks me off because it used to...
  18. Help with Concept Map!!

There are other threads on the topic if you search for concept maps. You might try this website also, I never used it but another student recommended it http://cord.org/txcollabnursing/onsite_conceptmap.htm Good Luck!
  19. Nursing and tattoos

Got #3 a few months ago, the Disney character Eeyore on my left outer ankle - covered by scrubs. I am pondering the next one, either a modified yin-yang symbol with the yin and yang made out of horses heads, (not sure where I'll put it, prolly upper ...
  20. Anyone not making med errors?

I was wondering if there are any nurses out there who have been practicing for some time and have not had a med error. I had a near miss and my precptor mentioned that eventually everyone has one. This scares me to death! I know mistakes happen, but ...
  21. Anyone not making med errors?

no doubt! i learned that lesson when an md ordered a k rider for a new admit with a k level of 5.5!!! uh, i'm not hanging that one! big thanks to everyone who responded. i will definitely keep my healthy fear but realize that we are human as well. t...
  22. Anyone not making med errors?

Thank you for the responses so far. This is the same thing many other nurses have told me as well. My near miss was in drawing up IV push ativan. The ordered dose came up to 1mL but I draw out all 2mLs that were in the vial. Preceptor asked me what t...
  23. The American South? Or, the West?

I am from deep south Louisiana and now live in Fort Worth. My hubby and I laugh when people call Texas the south. It is west to us. But then again, for us Cajuns, anything north of Shreveport is not considered "southern", states like TN and KY are "y...
  24. Suggestions for Supplies

EKG calipers - I am doing my residency on a CSU and will be starting an internship there in October. I use mine every day when we print out tele. Good luck!!!
  25. what to know @ scene of accident

Weird that this was posted today, I was thinking about this when I saw a near miss collision today and was going to post the same question! Thanks for the advice everyone, and to the OP for posting the question!
