  1. First vaginal exam

How are new nurses taught vaginal exams? Do you just learn about it in theory, and then go in and do it with the patient unaware you don't know what you are doing? Or does your preceptor go in with you to assist? It just seems to me that a laboring...
  2. Has anyone been accepted to RMH school of nursing or CCP

CCP does not have an evening or weekend program. Raquel - I had a 26.5 on the AHT, and received my letter mid-february (2007).
  3. Thomas Jefferson University Hospital

I had a rotation there, and I liked it a lot. The thing that struck me the most was that the nurses there were younger (20's - 30's) compared with other hospitals I've been to. That was a positive in my eyes, the floor seemed more energetic for tha...
  4. How far did you have to go to take your boards??

The closest testing site to me is literally 30 seconds from my job. They are in the same business park. When I heard that I wondered if there is any significance to that (good or bad)...
  5. Can someone "dumb down" blood pressure for me?

loricatus, that is an excellent summary I think, thats exactly how I understand it in my head, but would never have been able to put it into words:up: Nascar nurse - good analogy, and funny to boot!
  6. Sending in Drexel Deposit!

Congratulations and good luck! What was your gpa if you don't mind my asking?
  7. Is Saunders the Gold Standard?

Hi Ira - Sorry to hear that...
  8. Is Saunders the Gold Standard?

I have been using Saunders since I started school, mostly as a gauge of how well I am prepared for a test. I always average above 70%, usually above 80%, even doing questions cold (no studying). This semester my program has us doing assigned questio...
  9. Comm College of Philadelphia 2009 Nursing Program

I agree about completing the supporting courses before starting the program. I'm at CCP now taking Sociology 101 and Nursing III right now, and its a lot, so I imagine the science courses would be much tougher to handle. Granted I'm also doing othe...
  10. Interview and a question

I have an interview next week for an aide position on a l&d floor. It does not involve direct patient care, only stocking and cleaning, etc. Can this be useful at all in terms of a future career in OB nursing? I'll be graduating in May with my ...
  11. Interview and a question

Well I accepted the position, so here's hoping this is my foot in the door, so to speak! :wink2:
  12. Contact the nurse manager??

I've seen a lot of posts mentioning that in a job search it can be helpful to contact the nurse manager of the floors you are interested in directly, essentially bypassing HR/recruiters. But how to do this tactfully? How would you find their contact...
  13. Contact the nurse manager??

Thanks, that is what I thought, just showing up would be inappropriate. Also, I understand that you can't bypass HR entirely, only that they aren't necessarily the most proactive party in the hiring process... So in terms of contacting the manager b...
  14. Besides the obvious (a nurse who just isn't interested in this population), why would someone not want to do L&D if they originally thought they would be interested? I apologize if this question is worded awkwardly... The thing is, I can't think ...
  15. What would be reasons why someone didn't like L&D?

Again, thank you everyone... I think I have a better perspective :) Think I'd still like to try, but will certainly be keeping an open mind.
  16. What would be reasons why someone didn't like L&D?

Thank you all for the insightful responses :) I'm currently nursing my son as I read, and will try to post a more thoughtful reply tomorrow!
  17. People who got in to CCP....

I had 9 pts (or maybe 8?), but I guess that doesn't answer your question really. I really don't believe that anyone gets in with 6pts even though they say *maybe* There are just too many applicants for that to happen. I can think of one classmate ...
  18. Congratulations :) Just wanted to add: This is only available after being employed for a year and working a minimum number of hours.
  19. Main Line Health

Hey, I'm doing my clinical there now. Anything you were wondering about in particular that I can answer from the student perspective? ETA: I'm at Lankenau. They just switched to computer charting, and use scanners for med administration. I'm on a ...
  20. First and Second Semesters, specifically

No algebra/calculus at all, and minimal chemistry...mostly fluids and electrolytes, basic idea of Partial pressures, osmosis, etc. It seems to be more grounded in A/P, and I'm only 8 weeks and 2 tests into my first semester, so I can't speak to how 2...
  21. Could you explain to me what a bolus is, in your own words?

I think that is about right, but it really refers more to the time factor, rather than the amount. I always think of it as a "ball" of medicine, it could be any size, but its going in all at once.
  22. Why can't I find prednisone in drug book?

I think they're different, prednisolone is a metabolite of prednisone (or something like that).
  23. Why can't I find prednisone in drug book?

I have Davis's 10th too, and its under corticosteroids. I'm not sure why it's not in the index, but if you look where it is supposed to be alphabetically (p.978 in my book) there is a small insert telling you to look under corticosteroids. Hope that...
  24. Clinicals at your school

    1st semester: Med-Surg 2nd : Med-surg 3rd: 1/2 med-surg 1/2 community or LTC 4th: 1/2 med-surg 1/2 LTC or community
  25. Can someone good in micro please help me? I'm lost.

Ok, I'll try to explain. DNA & RNA are made of a sequence of thousands/millions of nucleotides. A nucleotide is one of the five things that I mentioned (adenine, guanine, cytosine, thymine and uracil). Uracil replaces thymine in RNA. An amino a...
