  1. No tuition reimbursment or loan repayment?

Just curious if anyone besides SSM hospitals are taking away tuition reimbursement and loan repayment. I found out last week that they were going to take this incentive away for 2009 and revisit it again in 2010 due to the recession. :uhoh21:
  2. ATI vs NCLEX

For those of you that have taken both ATI and then the NCLEX did you find them comparable or was one more difficult than the other? The reason why I ask is that I just recently took my first ATI test and although I passed I couldn't help feeling like...
  3. Pushing Dilaudid?

Does the physician write for it to be given as a drip in the 50ml of saline? If not in my facility they would consider that a med error since I did not follow the order of slow IVP. We push our Dilaudid but we don't usually give that large of a dose.
  4. night shift

I have worked nights for 13 years now and rarely switch myself completely back to a day schedule. I really do try to have more than 1 night off between shifts. As for what I do while I am up all night and my family is sleeping....well I shut the bedr...
  5. Survey....working over.

The longest was 4 hours. It would have only been about an hour to an hour and a half but the nurse that was taking over my patient refused to come into the room to get report from me. The patient I needed to give report on had a very labile BP,copius...
  6. Chamberlain College of Nursing A good or Bad Education?

It is what you put into it. I graduated from that facility and have had no difficulties making it through my orientation. Passed boards on the first go around with 75 questions. Best of luck with your decision.
  7. How was Nurses Week celebrated at your Facility

Our facility did nothing for nurses week this year but that was decided at employee meetings that were held to get input on how we would like the hospital to deal with the recession. I will happily give up a free lunch and mug with hospital logo in r...
  8. Hospitals East of St. Louis?

It is in Maryville, IL. about 20 mins from downtown St. Louis.
  9. Anyone attend or have info on SWIC?

I took all of my pre-reqs at SWIC. I have heard good things about their program. Those are the classes that you need to have completed prior to applying unless things have changed they like it if you have more done. Again unless they have changed the...
  10. Hard for GNs to get jobs in St. Louis?

I know that the job market is slim in the area but there are jobs out there. I recently changed jobs and it took me a while to find a job that I wanted. Now I was being picky about which hospital and division I went to (already had a job just didn't ...
  11. Male Foley...Wife Watching!!

As long as the patient is ok with her staying it doesn't bother me in the least.
  12. Hospitals East of St. Louis?

Belleville, Il. has two hospitals. Memorial and St. Elizabeth's. They both have websites that list their employment opportunities and are located about 15 minutes from the Poplar Street Bridge. Good luck with your search.
  13. How long until you found your "groove"?

About 6 months to feel like I was actually getting it. 8 months before I stopped being apprehensive prior to my shift. Hang in there you will get it. I remember at about 2-3 months into my new career as a nurse I had decided that I made a really big ...
  14. New Grad Wages

St. Louis, Mo. area 18.75-19.20 plus differentials that vary from place to place.
  15. No tuition reimbursment or loan repayment?

I forgot that they were no longer doing this either. You can continue to contribute but they will not. I am grateful to have a job. I just wonder if the cuts could have come from somewhere else. Not much to do except wait and see.
  16. No tuition reimbursment or loan repayment?

UGG. That is not the news that I was hoping for. If one hospital starts it then it seems others will follow or so it seems. Thanks for your response.
  17. one yr of adult now nicu - scared

I understand what you are saying completely. I recently moved to the NICU (level III) after a year of adult med/surg ICU. Dang what a difference. I have been there 4 months now and have mixed emotions. I frequently wonder if I made a huge mistake by ...
  18. How many hospitals did you apply to?

While I live in an area that has numerous hospitals I only applied to two. I placed 3 applications for different areas in one hospital and applied for one position at the second hospital. IMHO applying at 8 different hospitals may be a little much pl...
  19. ASN or BSN program

If you have the luxury of taking the extra time to complete your BSN before you need to work I would go for it. I went the ADN route because my family is dependent on my income. Nursing was a career change for me. I have now enrolled to complete the ...
  20. Descrimination: A full hot meal or soup and a sandwich

No free lunch here either. Soup and a sandwich costs me 5.75 in the cafeteria. If I want the hot meal entree they are serving it is 7.95. They do provide a meal for us on Thanksgiving and Christmas. I guess I appreciate what little they do give me si...
  21. Med/Surg unit...

Well there is the old adage that one must start on a med-surg floor in order to hone your organizational and assessment skills. As a fairly new nurse (10 months) that started in a medical/surgical ICU I have mixed emotions. If you really want to do s...
  22. unknowledgable

Always remember to treat the patient and not the equipment. I work ICU and can't tell you how many time the monitors alarmed for a decreased O2 sat and I walk in the patient is nice and pink, has no shortness of breath but is moving their hand around...
  23. Just graduated two weeks ago?

Yes that wore out broke down feeling is normal. I thought I was losing it until I talked to several of the people I graduated with and they felt the same way. I took a couple of weeks to enjoy life (went on a 10 day cruise) and then it was back to th...
  24. Any tips for getting through Med/Surg, Pharm, and Mental

Study, study, study. The reading for this semester will probably be very heavy so stay on top of it. I agree with the other poster regarding studying the pharm with the disease process you are learning about. It seems less overwhelming. I never found...
  25. Is this a Good Stethoscope??

I have this stethoscope and LOVE IT!!!!!!!! I can hear everything and anything I need to. The other posters are correct about it attempting to walk. I have chased a resident and an intern out of the unit to get it back. They "forgot" it was around th...
